Kindergartener arrested after ‘monkey business’

AVON PARK - Desre’e Watson better hold on, there may be tough times ahead. She is just 6-years-old, and was just arrested and put in jail. “I was scared,” she recalled.

Desre’e goes to school at Avon Elementary. Police say she had a run in with a teacher, got angry, and began kicking and scratching. She even hit a teacher who tried to intervene.

It’s hard for her mom to believe. “She never falls out. She is very respectful. I tell her to do anything, she do it,” offered mother Lateshia Wilson.

When school officials couldn’t get her under control, they called in the police as a last resort. Officers say Desre’e just wouldn’t calm down, so they handcuffed her and put her into a cruiser.

Next, they say she began to kick the door.

She was booked into the Highlands County Jail, just like an adult, and charged with a felony and two misdemeanors.

“I was very upset and felt like they violated my baby’s rights,” said Wilson. “I am very upset about it.”

So upset, she called the NAACP to investigate.

Police say when Desre’e hit and kicked a teacher, she committed a crime. So, they had every right to arrest her.

In any case - a 6 year old is not an adult and should not be treated as such. Schools and Kindergartens have a responsibility to care for and protect their students and children, not to call the cops and haul them off to jail if they are difficult to deal with.

i agree with the putting her in the cruiser cuffed until she settled,but it should have stopped there. that would have scared her which is fine. dont know how those charges will stick,i know here you cant be charged if your under 12

Agreed.

But being that the child kicked and scratched and teachers these days can't even touch (in any manner) or reprimand a child without someone screaming physical/ verbal abuse I can't blame them for calling the police in that respect.

The police may have behaved as they did because they thought a little real fear would do her some good or perhaps this child was truly wild and uncontrollable. (extreme response from police regardless)

Don't let age and alleged prior behavior full you.

I'm curious as to why the child wasn't just left in a counselors office or the nurses office until a parent could be reached to come to pick her up.

I don't we'll ever know - this will turn into a race issue - they've already set it up to be such.

tricky situation eh vel,i think teachers should have some sort of training to intervene when children are being violent,I work in a group home and I took a course on how to restrain them when they freak out and endanger themselves or others,but there are so many wackos out there that this shit would happen when it isnt needed just so some freak can get their jollies.

I'm going to half disagree. No one kid should have the right to disrupt the schooling of others, so she needed to be removed from the classroom.
Now having her taken to jail was a little to far, IMO.
When I was her age if I struck my teacher I'd have had a whipping at school, and another one when I got home. I suppose when you take corporal punishment out of the schools you have to replace it with some other deterrent.
