Might get laid off. Thinking about joining army...

I wasnt thinking enlisted, was thinking warrant officer or officer. Why would I deal with less BS as an officer than as enlisted? I would think its the other way around, as an officer I am responsible for those under me and have to deal with bullshit from officers above.
Because, like any other government job, the higher your rank the higher your pay.

And in the military (perhaps even MORE so than the civilian sector), the axiom of "shit rolls downhill" very much holds true.

Dave, I did just run across one thing: Age waivers are possible for those with prior military service.

The military really, really likes intelligent people who know how to work computers and numbers, seriously. Recruiters are HIGHLY motivated, and creative, individuals.

Ask people what they think of soldiers who say "I don't want to go to war! I just signed up for the money".

Signing for money is fine - as long as you don't say shit when you're being deployed, treated like shit, or putting your life on the line. It's the paycheck soldiers who usually bitch the most.

When I was deployed to the Gulf, all I said was.."you signed the contract" and they manned up. That was back in 1990 when we had defeated communism and the world was supposed to be a magically peaceful place. I can't imagine an 18 year old enlisting since 2001 that didn't understand they could go to a foreign country and risk death.

fuck, am i that old
besides, "prior service" is used very lightly in my case: i got through marine boot, did a few weekend drills then quit at about 6 months. Im hoping that wont be a serious factor since it happened 15 years ago

About.com has a really terrific military section, here's the age limits by branch:

* Active duty Army - 42
* Army Reserves - 42
* Army Natinal Guard - 42
* Active duty Air Force - 27
* Air Force Reserve - 34
* Air National guard - 34
* Active duty Navy - 34
* Navy Reserves - 39
* Active duty Marines - 28
* Marine Corps Reserves - 29
* Active duty Coast Guard - 27
* Coast Guard Reserves - 27

Age waivers are possible for those with prior military service.

Do with it what you will. In terms of branches to enlist, IMO they fall like this: Air Force/ANG, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard (but you REALLY fucking have to love the water), Army.

It's actually a toss up whether Marines or Coasties have the shittier basic, seriously. Coasties don't have to hold to the same federal legal standards the other branches do (they are evil to those boys). The Marines are brutal, but at least there are rules (but you've been there). Air Force and Navy, IMHO, potentially set you up for life better. More education opportunities.

LOL...my father enlisted in the Navy to avoid the discomforts of ground combat and rebel against my grandfather...they made him a corpsman..pwned.

I bet you could get a good gig in the Army....as an officer...believe it or not the US Army has jobs for everyone, its nickname isn't "The Corporation" for nothing...:).

Join Haliburton. All the money and the government doesn't own your body.

If you're not okay with going through hell and possibly dying for causes you may or may not believe in - DO NOT - join the United States Military.

I'm happy being a civilian.
