Send them to San Diego. We seem to have a never ending supply of junkies and losers who sell 25 cent newspapers at every stoplight, yet still somehow manage to live in one of the most expensive cities in the US.

while they get full room/board from mom and dad.
I've officially reached the age where the generation born after my kid (late generation Y/early generation Z) scare me. Sometimes I think I'm one rocking chair away from being the old woman who sits on her porch yelling at kids to get off her lawn ...
I think people are overly digitized and substitution of electronic media and entertainment for real world activities is not healthy. People are information overloaded, ever more socially wired in yet increasingly emotionally isolated.
Can't believe I'm about to say this but ... but they probably can do that because they're selling newspapers on the corner to support their umm, recreational activities

Actually they get free room and board from the alpha project and other charities aimed at helping drug addicts and alcoholics.

Not surprising, back when she first moved in with us I couldn't get my stepdaughter squat even though all she had coming in was about $200/mo. in unemployment. Once they heard she didn't have a substance abuse problem and wasn't homeless it was like triage, there's other people with greater need.

I agree with you. What feels like socializing through those means isn't so much about focusing on friends and relationships, but setting a stage for us to focus on ourselves in the presence of other people. It is scary to think that's how kids are interacting all the time in their developmental stages, hopefully their parents are aware and keep an eye on how much time is spent doing those activities.
