Your Most Memorable Meal

musclemom

I Told You So ...
EF VIP
I don't care if it was good or bad, eaten out or at home (hell, if it was even food for that matter) but what was the one meal that stands out in your mind.

My mother made cheese lasagne one time ... and Mom was a good cook really, but she had gotten some cheese from one of her clients (she cleaned offices/houses) ... it was blue cheese ... well mom, bless her heart, thought "cheese is cheese" and uh, made lasagne with it ...

FYI, blue cheese + tomato sause =

Now, you gotta know, as I'm typing this I am both laughing and crying. I'm laughing because it was, truly, the worst lasagne I had ever had, bar none. N-A-S-T-Y

I'm crying because it'll never happen again (my mom crossed over three years ago). I gotta give the woman credit for experimentation -- if nothing else -- and she was able to laugh about it, afterwards.

Blue Cheese lasagna....lol. My most memorable meal is the variation I had everyday with my family growing up, fried potatoes and beef of some variety. The company is more important than the food for memories.:)

Ohhhhh, c'mon, I want the STORY, why is it memorable!?! Is it foul or fucking spectacular!!!

I was 10 and went with my grandfather on a long haul load to london ohio and we went to a amish restaurant on the way back and sat in a buggy converted into a booth, had the best breakfast ever,Ill never forget that day as long as I live, nor will I forget the sandwhiches grandma use to make for us to take on long runs

Alpaca heart.
I was in Peru. I had just gotten back into Cusco after 5 days on the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. It tasted like blood. I wasn't a big fan.

OK here is a story for you:

I grew up the child of poor immigrants. My mother came from a VERY poor family. My dad only got helped to being poor once the communists invaded Hungary. Anyways, whatever my mother put on the table, you had to eat it ALL - no complaints and no excuses.

I was about 4/5 and one summer day my mother made kapros tok fozelek - which is squash stew heavily seasoned with dill (that woman would make fozelek - which is sort of a poor man's stew with EVERYTHING). I took a bite and cried, told her that I didn't like it. Begged her not to make me eat it. Well, she became indignant, to say the least. She gave me this big long speech about how hard my father worked to give her money so that she could feed us. So I figured if I ate it real fast w/out breathing through my nose, I wouldn't taste it and I could get it all down. THE SECOND I took my last bite ALL OF IT CAME BACK INTO MY PLATE.... right in front of my mother. I thought for sure I was dead. My mother was in shock, didn't say a word, told me to go outside and play. She cleaned it up and NEVER made that dish again, nor anything seasoned with dill.

To this day, I can not even stand the smell of it, let alone eat anything seasoned with it.

Good enough fer ya? :)

If you keep tomatoes out of the equation you should be okay.

Consider adding a hint of truffles.

Rethink the balsamico -- unless it's VERY aged to the point of being earthy/sweet; trust me on this, blue cheese does not "like" acid, it seems to want to "be" the acid if that makes sense.

I would not put on a lot just a few crumbles here and there

i just wanted a piece of french silk pie. i was fresh out of the hospital & it was my first night in 3 weeks without having another person within 10 ft. of me 24 hours a day. i wasn't able to use my left arm, and i was left handed, so it was doubly akward for me. so whatever, i dropped the mutherfucker on the dirty kitchen floor. i almost burst into tears (for all you know i did) there wasn't any of that 5 second bullshit, because it was pie and i'd have to get down on the floor and lick it up. the only reason i didn't do it was because i didn't think i could get back up. what really sucks is i couldn't clean it up, so i had to look at it for a day on top of it......

it was slow smoked BBQ Brisket with corn on the cob and baked potato at a welcome home cook out they held for me when i got home from being deployed for a year

No specific ones come to mind - I know I always enjoyed my grandparents' homemade saur kraut and some of grandma's Slavic stuff. I was also mightily impressed w/ the first time I grilled swordfish w/ ginger teriyaki seasoning.

Hmm...most memorable for positive reasons was probably the meal I had at Cafe de la Paix in Quebec City. I remember my father took my sister and I there, even though we were sort of young by most people's definition for 'fine dining'. I just remember everything being so good, as I was an adventurous eater from a very young age. The best part though: after I went up to where they kept the desserts and chose one, the waiter came back with THREE desserts. I asked him why he brought three since I only ordered one, and he explained that the other two 'complimented' the rich chocolate torte I had chosen. That just seemed so cool to me at the time...three deserts!

My most memorable meal for negative reasons has to be a meal I had at a friend's house as a kid. I can't stand eggs...it makes me sick to watch someone else eat an egg, that's how much I hate them. Well, his mother made dinner and the salad had crumbled bits of egg in it. I forced myself to eat it because I didn't want to be rude, even though it was absolutely killing me. For hours after I ate it, I'd remember the taste/texture and get 'flashback' memories that made me shudder.

perhaps some ground turkey, adds a nice meaty without taking away too much from the cheese flavored

My grandma bought a box of ding dongs. I loved them so much, that I literally got inside the cabinet, sat down and stuffed every ding dong in the box in my face. My grandma opened the cabinet door to find a 7 year old with chocolate all over her face and the last ding dong in her hand. She gasped, "Heather, did you eat that entire box?" I looked up and mustered my best innocent look and said, "No, mamaw."

Remember when McDonalds had an anniversary and burgers were 25 cents? I ate twelve. Yes, twelve in one sitting. Doing the math it was about 3500 calories at once.

Actually just last weekend I ate 27 chicken wings at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo. I wasn't hungry for 24 hours after that.

Most memorable family meal? I once ate 9 cobs of corn at lunch one summer day when I was a teenager. Imagine all that fiber shooting through your system and you can guess where I spent the remainder of the day.

There is some GREAT stories in here and a few things have reminded me of some of my own stuff.

Funny how we tie food so closely with emotion and memory.

93' - st. jean cap ferrat, france

small quiet local restaurant in the hill (literary)on an inlet (i've tried for years to recall the name)
we sat outside on the beach as the water lapped the sand and pebbles
lobster ravioli with a lobster bisque sauce - dead GOD it was heavenly

A can of spam.

When I was 9, my cousin (who was 24) babysat me. She decided to make me a fried egg but add dijon mustard and tabasco on it. She ate them this way and decided I would also.
I bit into it and ran to the bathroom. My horrid cousin would not let me get up until I ate the rest. I sat there for 3 hrs not eating it, at which point my Mom shows up and yelled at my cousin.
To this day, if I think about the taste I want to puke

A good meal..........I recall when I was 12 or so, eating the best damn hamburger from Dairy Queen. Oddly, I stopped eating meat when I was 18. But that was a good burger

about 12 years ago, i got fast-food chinese for "lunch" at 2 pm and apparently the stuff had been under the lights a little to long. . .the rest of the work day went ok. . .however, in the evening, during my workout i noticed a little churning and queasiness. . .by the time i finished i was feeling pretty rough. . .i went home and layed on the couch for a couple of hours then went to bed. . .i was probably asleep for about an hour when i woke up knowing that i needed to get to the bathroom asap. . .for the next few hours i power-puked so violently that i swear my boxers got sucked right up my butt a few times. . .and the fun was only beginning. . .after the hurling subsided i went back to bed. . .however, an hour or so later i woke up to hallucinations. . .yup. . .bunch of lawn gnome-lookin' types running around my house with big-ass butcher knives. . .my wife (who only weighs about 105) had to sit on top of me to keep me from going into the closet and getting my shotgun to kill some of the little bastards. . .thankfully, in my weakened state she was able to subdue me. . .after i fell back asleep, she called a doctor friend of mine and he got out of bed and came over to our townhouse to check me out. . .she told him the story about the chinese takeout, the puking and the hallucinations. . .he diagnosed some sort of staphylococcus poisoning and told her i'd "probably be" ok. . .morale of the story?? don't eat fast food chinese. . .but if you do. . .don't eat lunch at 2 pm. . .that is all.

:worried:

My God, that sounds TERRIBLE!

My Mom gave us a gift casserole this week that was so bad that I fed it all to the dog. I was so pissed off because I was expecting an excellent meal like usual from her. We had hotdogs instead. I don't have the nerve to tell her she ruined my night.
