Students To Discuss Racial Tensions After Campus Fight
Second Incident In Week Prompts Action By Authorities
LOS ANGELES -- Extra police officers were assigned to patrol a South Los Angeles high school on Tuesday, a day after another outbreak of student violence. But other extraordinary steps are also being taken, according to LAUSD Superintendent Roy Romer.

Monday's fight at Jefferson High School occurred less than a week after a separate but similar incident in Santa Monica.
In both cases, students said the fights were an extension of ongoing racial tensions between black and Latino students.
Romber told NBC4's Robert Kovacik that the most noticeable difference on Tuesday would be in the increased presence of adults.
"We obviously had problems yesterday, and we're going to have different procedures today," Romer said. "We'll have a lot more adults on campus."
Romer said the students' schedules would also be altered.
"We'll change some of the periods, and we'll get control and quiet this campus down," Romer said. "Obviously, there's a lot of tension, but we have both the short-range and the long-range plan that we're going to implement, beginning today."
Kovacik said students were told to enter through a single entrance where they had to pass through security. After that, students would be engaged in discussions about race relations -- in particular, relations among blacks and Latinos.
Romer said the tensions are not restricted to schools.
"There's tension in this neighborhood," Romer said. "It's obviously come on campus. We have a number of things that we need to do. One, we're going to absolutely bring enough adults on campus where the children are safe. That's the first thing. Secondly, we need to talk it out. We need to work it out. We'll talk with them, period by period today, and they'll talk with each other, and we'll bring parents on campus on Thursday night and share the tension these kids feel with the parents. We need to have the help of the neighborhood. We can solve this. There is a human relations problem in this community and in school."
Kovacik asked Romer if two recent violent outrbreaks indicate a pattern of danger at schools.
"No, it's not a pattern ... We have obvious tensions in this community, and some of them are racial, and we need to work it out. We're going to learn to live together ..."
Romer said the problems would be dealt with in an orderly fashion.
"The way to do this is to first be sure that we have a lot of adults around to quiet it down," Romer said. "Secondly, get it on the table. We need to find another way to resolve this besides a fight, and we're going to get that done."
