What's Up With My Computer??!!!

I constantly hear this ticking sound from my computer- i guess its my hard drive- everytime i open a program or something. It always did this but now its prolonged or something and goes on for a minute and every program takes a while to open. Its just over all running very slow. Then all of a sudden it would freeze and not respond. I would hit ctrl alt delete to close the program and a blue screen would come up telling me the system is busy...or after that another blue screen would come up telling me that the system has become unstable. What is wrong, why does it do all of this, cant it just operate like it used to?? Do I need more ram or a bigger hard drive???

You know clicking usually is the sound of death. Run Scan Disk to see how much of you hard drive is corrupted. After that try to defragment it if it is still able to be defragmented. Usually though that sound means your hard drive is going the way of the graveyard. Suggestiong: time to by a new hard drive. It could also be your CPU fan not working or a damaged power supply. Open up the computer and take a look at both. But if you think its your hard drive thats clicking, then its corrupting. Is it over or near 5 years old and not a SCSII? If so, then the hard drives crap.

if windows is giving you a lot of errors lately, out of nowhere, i suggest you scan for virii. it also wouldnt hurt to defrag and run scandisk every now and then.

Yep, most likely the hard drive, if you keep using your machine you probably have 1-2 weeks TOPS before you lose everything.

How old is the hard drive? I'm not sure how long they should last but mine died after 4-5 years. When it died it was a secondary drive but died nonetheless.

lol, the computer is maybe 17 months old. I do a lot of downloading and its pretty small by today's standards. 10 gig. I ran out of space many times and delted a lot of crap. This happened to my old 2 computers years after getting them, but since I got this cable modem I leave the comp on all the time and I am always using it.

I should get a new hard drive. I know little about computers but I usually like fucking around with things until I can get them to work. The problem is my comp is a compaq and i dont know if all drives will work on this thing. I could use more space though. I should buy an antivirus while Im at it.

Thanks

Anyhing other than SCSI will work just fine, which means almost any drive on the planet in use today.
