They'll cut the initiation fee at least by half since they frequently have specials that offer 2 for 1 or 1 at half off. They also try to throw some personal training into the startup fee, be clear that you don't want any.

Probably best to talk to the manager, since the sales staff more than likely will get a commision based on how much they squeeze out of you. If you're ever going to use the downtown Golds, make sure they throw in the "with parking" membership so you can use the garage, otherwise it is hard to find a space anywhere near the place....

I'm in the midwest, and I can tell you $150- $250 is about right for a gym that's not a hole in the wall. I was at a GOLD's here and it was about the was you quaoted. 24hour,bally's all about the same.

They do get cheaper the longer you stay, and ask about a two or three year plan.

And you can see if you know somebody that's a member there, alot of gym here waive initial fees on "friends" joining

I say go to the manager and explain to him i just got out of college..still in that broke azz college student mode.(even if your lying) I really want to continue to train. If i sign an extended contract like 1.5-2 years can you lower/drop the sign up fee..

What do you have to loose..if he says no..then you just have to shell out the loot.

The funny thing is that this is supposedly the "deal" for students...

I have plenty of money, but I still like to not get reemed by greasy salesman... I guess I am just going to have to give in.

Most of the time, there is what they call a maintenance or building fee. Mine was $100 upfront, and then $28 a month, then it went to $30, and now it is $32 a month. Just beware of gyms that may close right after you join. I had a friend have this happen. They paid $150 to join and have not even paid their monthly due yet and the gym closed. It was a nice gym and had been there about 2 years.

Oh that sux. That is how they are making there money. They jacked up the sign up fee but lowered the monthly fee.

If you think about it. They lowered the monthly cost by 10-15 bucks.
that equals a 120-190 loss.
but they upped the sign up fee by 100-150
so they only eat 50 max.

If your planing on working out there for more then a year its worth it. In the second year you save money. If its only for a year. then your better off just signing up for the normal rate package.

they might; they can also throw some "free" months on the end of a 12 month contract if you pay up front; which helps reduce the cost some.

I pay $32 a month and no initiation fee for me and my woman at a decent gym. Alot of machines and weights are older than me, but they work. You shouldn't have to pay much for a gym if all you want is the weights and you dont care about a swimming pool, suana, and other crap that I never use.
