Now that a tax hike hits everyone, people complain. You should think about this when tax increases are proposed for cigarettes, alcohol, property, etc. It is easy for a majority to vote a tax increase on something they will not have to pay; rather rest the burden on someone else.
Not to mention a gas tax would fit in with the trend of demonizing fossil fuels and anything that requires them, i.e. SUV's, thereby punishing those who have made such "immoral" purchases.
God forbid we protect ourselves by reneging on AIDS grants, loans to foreign countries, membership dues to the UN, defunding the NEA, pulling the plug on NPR, Amtrac, increases in public education funding, the fifty-trillion pork projects in existence, etc.
