What is the best protection/guard dog??

I want to get a dog. I don't have a family, so it wouldn't be around children much. I want a dog that would be able to be trained to defend me if I needed. What kind of dog would provide protection for family and friends, but not be a threat to little kids if they decided to pet him? I like rottwielers, pits and german sheapards. I am open to any type of dog. I want one that will be loyal. I would obviously be willing to put the time/money into getting him trained right. Does anyone have any experience with the type of dog i'm looking for?? Thanks, Iron

Check your home owners ins. before you get one.
Most will charge more if you have those type of dogs, and some will refuse to insure you altogether.

My boyfriend's parents do not have children and they have a wonderful rottweiler. They are very loyal and can be fierce when needed.
Have you considered the australian cattle dog? It is a cross between a hyena and a german shepherd/collie. Very loyal because they are trained to nip at the heels of cattle to herd them around. I just got one for my father and the little guy follows him around all the time. Loyal to a tee, but a lot of energy.

We also had a collie and a black lab when I was younger. They are very faithful and loving, protective creatures.

Good luck

I want to get a protection gun also. But I think it will be more along the lines of a shotgun. That way, I will more likely maim and dabilitate the robber than kill him.

Good call. In that case, almost any dog can be trained to be a guard/attack dog. I'd suggest something like a German Shepherd, as they are extremely intelligent and loyal.

I was thinking that a German Shepherd would be good. I have seen what they can do for police officers. They are amazing dogs. I'll have to do some research on them. Iron
