Well, here's a vid of my powerclean

Thanks for checkin' my vid Scotsman - I'm definitely going to keep practicing, if nothing else they're a lot of fun and a great warmup.

Strong front squatting......on the drill, really I'd just echo what SR said about keeping the chest puffed up and torso upright. And, you know this, but drop even faster, lol....really just exaggerate the speed and the elbow whip to the point of being ridiculous and unnecessarily fast, and listen for those shoes to stomp really loud against the floor.

Thats an impressive front squat. Your other pure strength lifts are looking stout too. There are many schools of thought on this and many different types of lifters, but I feel you can NEVER be too strong. I would never want to be one of those purely finesse lifters who lives and dies by bar whip in order to stand up with their cleans (but don't get me wrong, you need a degree of finesse too)....just keep piling weight on those front squats, get really comfortable at the rock bottom position, and really get confident feeling you can catch anything you're fast enough to squat under and you can manahndle the bar under any circumstance, even if you're slightly out of position. It should really help you when dropping fast under something really heavy, as long as you're fast enough, take confidence in the fact that it is a given you'll be strong enough to stand back up.....I was meaning to post that the other day, and just wanted to include it.

Thank you for the comments.

Probably stated already but worth repeating: all the advice and training info posted up here is really invaluable. I’m glad I’m starting to post up vids so I can get feedback on how to get better. I have a ton of books, I have Starting Strength, Explosive Lifting for Sports, Weightlifting Encyclopedia and many others. But nothing beats having someone with a practiced eye look at your lifts (I guess it would help if I actually read them)

cheers guys

Anyway, this is the first time I’ve been able to even come close to dropping under the bar – now I have to dial in my form and speed and get to the point where I don’t have to think so much. Accepting some weight on the catch is my next mental hurdle. :chomp:

Also, speaking of front squats I’ve been meaning to ask – how would I push these?

For example if I was following a 5 x 5 type template, I’d probably do M 4 x 6 (heavy) BS, W – 6 x 4 FS (light), F – 1 x 6 BS (med). But this is more for pushing my BS.

Any suggestions for working both FS and BS at the same time? Or do I have to emphasize one over the other?

You can work them both....in fact, if you've never really pushed fronts too hard, you can train them on Wed and do backs on Mon and Fri.....If doing them on Wed, I would warm-up, progress with 3 sets of 5 adding weight each set, then do 4 progressively heavy triples and try to add to your top triple every week......I find the olympic squat has direct carryover to the front squat, but the reverse is not true (this is what I find with myself anyway) so I would never totally shelve back squats (althought I'd like to, lol).....once front squatting on Wed stops working for you and you want to further push the lift you can try something like this....Monday would be HEAVY front squats, 3 progressively heavy 5's, followed by heavy triples, doubles, or even singles......Wed could be back squats 5x5 of a straight weight, don't push it weekly, but just keep it put so they don't regress.....then on Fri do 5x5 on front squats adding weight each set and push the top set weekly.

I think I will BS on Mon/Fri and FS on Wed using the scheme you laid out. I find 5 x 5 FS really hard, and even 6 x 4 is pushing my capacity to rack it.

Usually following DF method I'd drop Wed squatting after 4-5 weeks, but I'd like to continue with them this time around.

I want to learn power cleans and I've read all about how to do them. Problem is, the video he posted looks right to me. Can someone post a link to a video of someone with perfect power clean form. I don't want to fuck it all up and hurt myself when I start with them.

I can only help with the last part.

Jim- form looks good as mentioned before just need to get faster which takes practice. So keep up the good work and the progress.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Promise you'll wear the kilt? ;)
