Tried shorter rest periods and it whipped my ass!!

Depending on what I am doing, I usually try to keep the rest periods around 2 minutes. On flat or incline bench for example, I rest about 2 minutes between sets....

Yesterday was chest/tri day, and I shorten the rests to 45 seconds. Talk about a humbling experience dudes. Not only could I not come close to same poundage as last week, but it felt like my muscles were giving up WAAY to early.

On a good note, I felt a HUGE burn when doing this. I am positive if I can stick with it for a couple of weeks, I will run into some new growth and shock the muscles into a new stage. Then, when I go back to longer rest periods, my muscles will be stronger AND more endured.

Just thought i'd share...

Shorter rest peroids are the way to go, for a bodybuilder. What are your goals?

Ha Ha , That`s exactly what I did yesterday. I was still able to do the same weights because they are`nt my maxes. I`m doing HST workout now.

I definately got a huge pump from resting 30-60 seconds, and my workout was done in 45 minutes (whole body)

I think I will incorporate that into some of my training routines from now on. When the weight gets light enough to do the reps, but too heavy to increase the weight, I`ll rest less between sets. That coupled with going from explosive reps to ultra strict/slow reps, I should be able to tweak alot with the workouts.

a whole lot of speed and strength is going to come out of doing that. i remember being humbled myself i started going that. now, resting more than 45 seconds is too much for me now. just wait until you do them on squats and deadlift!!! but great job..keep at it!! tb

I am going to try this for a few weeks and see how it goes. I think it will definately do me some good. Obviously my muscles do not have endurance, which I do not like.

My goals are size and power. The bodybuilding style is not for me. I want build the most powerfull, explosive body I can.

Hey BBF could you elaborate on why you think short rest periods are good for bodybuilders? I have always taken considerably long rest periods and it seemed fine, however, my boss at the gym I work out has a degree in Exercise Science, is a certified PT from a couple organizations, and he always puts people on these programs with 45min rests and supersets. I'm just trying to understand the logic/science behind short rest periods and supersets in terms of muscle hypertrophy.
