I agree there is more to this bill than the few sections I commented on. That being said, the part you guys seem to be focusing on is section 404 which is about using encryption technology.

Nowhere does it say law enforcement can now crack peoples encrypted email accounts and files. It says anybody who uses encryption technology when trying to commit a federal felony will receive an additional 5 years of jailtime.

The Patriot Act is about enhancing national security. Everything in it is aimed at being much stricter on people tied to terrorism.

This board, and all of the sites that you linked to, is full of conspiracy theorists who think by ordering steroids from Mexico they're going to be flown to Guantanamo Bay and have their passport torn up.

Carnivore and similar technology pose a bigger threat to our community than the Patriot Act. Call me naive and call me an asshole but this country isn't trying to make laws that give them absolute power over every individual. They're trying to give LE more authority when defending national security.

Yup, I said that this would happen a LONG TIME ago.. namely, right after 9/11. You can do a search on my name in the chat board and I predicted this 15 months ago. This is such an old trick, it's been used in history many many times. They're doing all this "for your own protection". They're taking away your rights, one by one, very slowly, so that hopefully nobody will notice. Scary thing is that most of the country just doesn't care, or isn't informed enough to really know what all this means. I'd rather have the odd terrorist attack, than have my freedom taken away.

Further, it's called the Patriot Act for a reason. The implication is, that if you don't support it, you're not patriotic. We all know how patriotic the american people are (admirably so), so nobody in their right mind would oppose anything patriotic right?! This is the EXACT SAME TACTIC used in Nazi Germany. There are so many parallels, it's scary. And all this right here is the reason I moved from the US to Canada. I still love the US, it's a great country with great people, but it's just all going downhill way too quick.
