The 6000 LB Challenge

bblazer

Banned
I'm putting up a challenge. Complete it, post up your results, and I will throw you some K. This is totally on the honor system, but if you video it, post it so we can all see the carnage.

Here are the rules.

1) You must lift a total of 6000 lbs off the floor and press it over your head from a standing position.

2) You may use any exercise you wish to accomplish this, as long as it it done with a barbell, and you may change form or exercise at any time during the process.

3) The weight must be lifted from a static position off the floor (all weight is on the floor before each rep).

4) Once pressed, you may not drop the weight or otherwise let it fall to the floor. You must place it back down on the floor.

5) You may use any weight you wish, but that can not change during the event.

6) You must time yourself, and record the time it took you to complete the exercise.

7) Women may go for 4000 lbs if they wish, but they must note it in their post.

For example, yesterday, I did 95lbs for 64 clean and press reps for a total of 6080 lbs in 15:03.

My wife did 4080 lbs doing 68, 60 lb clean and press reps in 11:43.

For some this may be easier than others. Don't criticize until you try. I poo pooed it because I am a big strong guy with a big ego and thought that this was a nothing deal. I was even going to do it with 135 on a 2" bar. Then my partner talked some sense into me and I went with 95 using a regular bar. I killed the first 30 reps. After that I was so O2 starved, I was seeing everything through a red filter, had to take long rests, and thought I was going to faint. Today I am sore as hell in places I did not expect to be sore.

Let the challenge begin....

Sounds like a fun challenge.

Do you have any video of your 6000lb lift? I would think a video is a must for proof of doing so.

Question #1, can it be a push press after the clean, or does it have to be a standing military style press?

Question #2
You said you can't drop the weight to the floor? Does that mean you can't throw it down, or you have to let it down slowly?

For cleans/ deadlift/ rows you are not supposed to try and control the weight back down, you are supposed to let it drop. Can you clarify this a little?

Question #3

Once the weight is on the floor, are you allowed to stand up, walk away for a little breather, or do you have to stay with your hands on the bar in the starting clean position?

Question #4
Can you use straps, or any other equipment to assist in the lift?

My guess is no?

Answers:

1) Yes, it can be a push press. As long as it is over your head locked out, and you are in a standing position.

2) You must control the weight all the way down and set it on the floor. It may not be dropped or thrown.

3) Yes you can stand up and walk away & take a break.

4) No straps or grip aids of any kind. A belt is fine. I used my Rehbann neoprene belt for the last half.

I don't have a video of it. I thought about making it required, but not everyone has the equipment, time or even want to have videos of themselves on the 'net. Plus I am an old handshake guy. The honor system applies.

What classifies as dropped? As long as it is in contact with your hands (gripped) all the way down?

In that case I just completed my 6000lb set with 150lbs x 40 reps. Wooh it was hard, the last 10 reps felt like death but I pushed through and made the lift.

Did it in 3:25. :p

I think in this day and age just about everyone has access to a video cammera. Take the vieo form behind so no one sees your face. In the olden days a handshake and a promise was good enough. these days I don't trust anyone. :)

Yup. Gripped all the way don and landed on floor in control. Think of what you would do if you had steel plates and a concrete floor you didn't want to damage.

I would go to an animal feed store and buy a 4' x 8' rubber mat to lift on for $60.00 :)

Clean and push press 185 for 11 sets of 3 sounds doable :worried:

I might try this out in the near future. Cool idea.

There are a few that have tried that idea, and I was even going to go with 135. The problem is at the end. It seems that those that tried to go with the big weights had a harder time with the last reps than the ones that went with more reps and lower weight. Even if, the heavy weight was well below their max.

There is no way I would make it with that weight. I bet even 95 would be a total bitch toward the end. What about clean grip power snatches :licker:

is there a rep/ set limit. what i mean to say is can i just do that all in 1- 6 rep set or is that against the rules?

No rep/set limit. If you want to do it in 6 reps, I say go for it!

I would like to see video on that one though....

oh..... i was hoping you would just take my word for it.:D

I'm really surprised no one has take up the challenge yet...

Is it too scary??????? ;)

B-

I will try it once I get to a point where I need to deload/ take a break form the training i am doing now.

I am guessing I will fail my first time around as my endurance isn't that great..

For my bday in a few weeks Im gettin a new digital camera I think, so when I do ill do the challenge so I can video it :)

I'm 6 weeks into a 5x5 and hitting PRs. This would ruin that. As long as this is a sticky I will not forget it. I might not video it, but I will do it. Will I earn extra points if I full squat clean every rep?

Squat clean press would definitely take it to another level.....

But unfortunately, the weight has to go to the ground each time.

B-

wow, if you big guys are using 95. I might have to just use the bar...

I have to ask, did you use bumper plates? Cause that would save a few inches and my gym doesn't haved them.

I too am in the middle of a successful 5x5 so I'll have to wait a few months...

Ya, the gym I just joined is f'n great!

They have bumper plates as low as 10lbs and the gym owner just informed me that they now have micro loading plates, 1lb, 1/3lb, 1/2lb and 1/4lb. I no longer have to carry around chains to make small increases.

I think if you are doing the 5 x 5 this would be a great deload for the Wed workout since it includes pulling from the floor and a standing press. So anyone currently doing the 5 x 5 wanting to try this, wait till your progress starts to stall and use this for the Wed deload.

It doesn't seem like a deload to me. It seems like an upload and a week of soreness.

About a year ago I did 55kg (122lbs) for 100 reps of clean and push press.

I did something like 6 sets of 10 with little rest and then started to do 5's & 3's whenever I could catch my breath. That's double the weight (12,000) but it took me about 35-40 mins.

I may try your 6,000 challenge on the weekend.

I'll attempt to use 135 on a Pedlay bar, so that's 44 reps - will try to do 7,7,5,5,5,5,10 - will be tough for me to break 15 mins I'd say.

Can you make a video? That would be sweet to see.

Decided to go with:

power snatch
99lb on Pendlay bar

Did almost 20 reps in the first 90 seconds.

did 2 sets of 5 in the next 2 mins!

banged out 8 sets of 3 with as little rest as possible

nailed 7 reps straight to make it 61 reps total in 7:50ish (def under 8 mins)

Didn't bother to video it as it's my first attempt.

I think the key was getting a 3rd of the reps done fast and then recovering and setting a good tempo.

I feel like I've been breathing fire right now, and I've coughed up so much water it unbelievable.

SHIT

Just re-read the post and saw a lot of mentioning to "pressing".

Can I have my own little section for overhead anyhow?

Let me ask you, did each rep start from a static position off the ground?

If the answer is yes, then you completed the challenge! Even if the answer is no, that is some impressive lifting!

YES they did ( I was careful to set down with care - even though I'm using bumpers), each rep was de-loaded.

I thought I'd blown the competition away with this sub 8 min time, and then I saw DJECLIPSE had done it in half that. I can't imagine...

BANG! You are our first winner of the 6k lb challenge! Enjoy the shot of K!

Great Job!

Im gonna try this on friday I think, Im not sure cuz I just popped my shoulder out benching a few days ago, Ill film it but it will be on a crappy camera phone...

& also, rule number 3 I think says "you can do any exercise you wish aslong as it is with a barbell" or somthing like that. Does it have to be an olympic bar?

when I trained at home I used a 5 foot barbell, its only 1 inch diameter and weighs 15lbs. Could I use that 'cause I was thinking of doing this challenge at home in the garden and thats the only barbell I have...

Im gonna try muscle snatches 66lbs x 91 reps. 5 sets of 15, 1 set of 16.

My wife did it on a short aluminum bar.

B-

lmao. Ill do it on the shorter bar at home some time when it sunny and iv got nothing to do then try it in the gym some other time. Im not sure when yet I just fucked my RC thing I tore it. In two weeks anyway Im getting a new digital camera anyway so Ill film it on that when I get it :)

im going to try this on friday i think.. whats been done so far? like shortest time to complete and fewest reps(obviously heaviest) to complete.

im thinking 3 sets of 10 with 200

I tell you to rest and here your looking to do some serioussssssssss damage trying to do this challenge, lol. LISTEN TO MY ADVICE BRO DON'T HURT IT WORSE! lolololol:D

I think you'll kill yourself. I would want to see video of that carnage.

Jason Christus went at it with 155 and nearly died. And as you know as a PLer yourself, he is easily in the top 10 in the country for PLers.

Best time I have seen so far is something around 8 min, and I think the heaviest I have seen someone go was 155. I went with 95 lbs and 64 reps in 15 min. I thought I found Jesus. It was much harder than any 20 rep squat routine I have ever done.

christus is a shw.. not exactly the pinnacle of cardiovascular health. And btw i just won my weight class last July in a MAJOR fed at their Nationals bro :) im on several top ten lists :verygood: 3rd highest 220 single ply total in the last two years right under Jeremy Hartman and Nick Tylutki.. but yeah with that said I will prob have a stroke you are right lol. i dont do cleans or jerks ever so ya i prob have no idea what im getting myself into. i will take a vid and post it, fail or not, so you can laugh at me and say i told u so

..yeah ive been thinking about it and read a few posts, i dont have a chance. ugh setting yourself up for failure suckz

im a good sport and gonna try it friday anyhow hah

you'll get it done. But you may find Jesus or some other spiritual entity at the end....

And you are right about Jason, he ain't exactly a track star.

If you want to go big, try 115-120. You can always do it again and go bigger!

Um, ya, I internet did it in sub 8 minutes.. real life is another story... :)

I thought the sarcasm in my post was pretty clear, lol

Nice lifting!

I've been away, way too ling to even come close to matching your numbers/ time

I tell you to rest and here your looking to do some serioussssssssss damage trying to do this challenge, lol. LISTEN TO MY ADVICE BRO DON'T HURT IT WORSE! lolololol:D

I said in my opriginal post I just fucked my RC! I am gettin a new camera but Ill have to see how it is by then, its getting better eveyrday but I dont think it will be fully recovered for a few days. I would do this with it hurting anyway, Im not that stupid, lol

let's get some video's rolling.

will try this and post my video of it after i finish my current 5x5.

did it in 10.15 earlier. 66lbs x 91 = 6006. done in a mixture of muscle snatches and clean and presses.

Cant find a site that will let me upload it though...

Great job. Enjoy the karma.

I am looking forward to seeing the video!

B-

Yeah, I may have to edit out the first 10 reps or so from the beginning for it to be allowed on youtube, unless you know of any other way I can get it onto the internet?

OK, its kinda boring to watch, no vomiting or loud shouting or anything. I did all my presses with no leg drive except a few...

i gotta sleep now but ill upload it tomorrow and post it here...

Watching someone work really hard with weights is never boring to watch.

B-

shit, im doing this as soon as i finish the 5x5.

i'm thinking 135lbsx whatever it takes for 6000

Again, great work EM. You never did say, how did you feel afterward?

B-

very thirsty, lol and my lips were dead salty from sweat.

gonna try it again some time clean and presses instead of muscle snatches, im sure i could have done it faster...

DiamondStarMotors baby.

Eclipse, TSI, DSM, that's him.

not to hijack but

i had a 500hp 91 awd. miss that car sooo much. talk about a sleeper, douches in their high dollar sports cars or the vtec fags would talk so much shit... and then id have them by 5 lengths in about 100ft lol i could give you whiplash launching that car if you werent ready for it

btw bblazer I havent backed down i have a meet this weekend im doing i didnt want to try this till after. i will try this and post vids

Ya, those cars kick ass! The motors are bullet proof. I had a 92 AWD. Mine had 360,000km's on the engine and it was still putting out 300Hp and ran 13.2 @ 106mph. If the tranny wasn't so old or I shifted faster it would have ran 12's with that MPH.

I only had roughly $1500 in mods to get that out of the engine. Small 16G, Waste gate dumping to atmosphere (the thing was loud), lightened flywheel, cheap boost controller and hacked maff (with home depot flapper door), bored out fuel rail, Walbro fuel pump, and that's about it. Everything else was stock. AWD kicks ass!

Complete sleeper, nothing fancy, I'd go to local street races (they were huge back then) and open the hood, it was filthy, never washed it, people laughed. Until I made my first run, then everyone wanted to know about the car.

If the wife would ever let me and I am allowed t get another toy I'd like to get another one to mess around with again.

DaveTSI, were you in NABAR? What did yours run at the 1/4?

My dad had a silver '93 GSX when I was a kid. It was a great car. We had lots of fun in it.

I had a 3000GT VR-4 n high school. Also a kick ass AWD turbo ride.

Ya, the 3000Gt's are nice too, they are a little more to mod though and a pain in the ass to work on.

Yeah, they are. I had a FMIC, Twin TD04-HL 19T turbos on it, Stage 2 SPEC clutch, exhaust DP from 3SX with a custom cat back, no cat.

I could get into the low low 12's on 16 psi. I had it dyno tuned and was probably around 430 awhp. I sold it after HS though. I got in trouble too many times speeding. That thing was sweet. I got rear ended in it so I had the whole car repainted too and replaced the leather and new carpet and mats with custom 2-tone black/tan leather/suede seats. It was in excellent shape. I miss that car.

I wish I never sold it now. Both my cars now are as fast or faster. They are RWD though.

Ya, my car got me into trouble as well. Way too many speeding tickets, it was too hard to stay off the boost, AWD launches etc are addictive.

I sold the car and bought a bike to go racing with... the bike on a track is way more fun then the car. But nothing beats the way you are pushed back into the seat when you launch a high HP AWD car.

I'll do this as cardio HIIT on my mid Oct-Nov cut.

I'm not sure if my shoulders will be able to handle it but I'll see - i've not done power cleans enough to develop any convincing trap/shrug/drive on the PC.

If you stick with a lower weight like 45-60 lbs you'll be just fine.

You'll feel like shit afterward, but you'll be just fine.

I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I would have thought there would have been a better turn out for this. So far not counting me and my wife there have only been 2 that have taken the challenge.

Is trying this just not all that interesting, or does it seem like too much work? I can't imagine it would interfere with people's programs too much...

I will do the challenge as soon as I can, but I do feel it will interfere with my training at this point. I am at a point right now where I am just starting to make PR's on the big lifts (squat, deads, etc., as well as playing way too much soccer 3-4 times a week. I know I am at the limit right now as to what my body can take without over training, I am pretty sure a workout like this would set me back, I would not be able to recover enough to continue on with my regular training.

It is a great challenge, I do like that it is achievable for a wide range of people due to the flexibility of either more weight, less reps, or less weight more reps. Yet is hard no matter what weight/ reps you are using.

Im gonna try this again but with clean and presses instead of muscle snatch and use 88lbs this time instead of 66.
8 sets of 8 reps then a set of 5. Total reps - 8x8 = 64 + 5 = 69.
69 reps x 88lbs = 6072

maybe I will wear a belt so I can do continental cleans when I get tired...

Video it if you can, but at least make sure to post up your results.

B-

I got 30 reps in about 3 minutes 30 seconds at 95 lbs with clean and jerk to try it out. Next week or sometime this week I'll do the full thing and video it. Boy, I felt great after that though, it was great ednurance work, as I don't power clean or clean and jerk often.

thing is, if I do these at the gym say I use 88lbs the bar will be at my ankles because the 10kg plates are so small...
