steroids....soon obsolete?

Just remember, we know remarkably little about how cells work. Gene therapy and nanotechnology is great stuff, but it will take much longer than you think.

actually we are learning more and more everyday at an exponentially increasing rate.......it will take a while...but just read the following article

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7535770.stm

this is already a reality and without a doubt athletes will be using this stuff or something like it within a very short period of time. After that it won't take long to get to the rest of us....

as far as nanotechnology goes...we are already running successful trials with lab animals....but are still a ways off with that technology....

Yep...steroids will soon go the way of Sweatin to the Oldies with Richard Simmons....both outdated and obsolete.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but your timeline is off :)

These therapies are going to require premarket approval under FDA. It's not going to happen anytime soon. It takes six months to a year (or more) to even get a new hip or knee implant approved.

I agree it will take time for human trials and FDA approval...but that's why the athletes and trainers will get a hold of this stuff first....of course they will get caught and give it a bad name and get a bunch of stupid politicians to make it illegal....

But that doesn't take away from the fact that the science is already here...and we are just getting started....:)

And once again, it's vastly more complex than you'd think. We're still trying to figure-out how enzymes work. It's embarrassing how vast the gap is even between something as simple as organic chemistry and molecular biology.

i think we both agree that this will happen but maybe disagree on the timelines.....i believe ( and hope ) gene therapies will be mainstream within 10 years.....

Go for 25 years and you should be set. Full-scale human approval and FDA rubber-stamped in 30-35.

Now genetic diseases are another matter. We may be 10 years out on that.

actually...as far as genetic diseases go...we are already there..

Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (ADA-SCID)
ADA-SCID is also known as the bubble boy disease. Affected children are born without an effective immune system and will succumb to infections outside of the bubble without bone marrow transplantation from matched donors. A landmark study representing a first case of gene therapy "cure," or at least a long-term correction, for patients with deadly genetic disorder was conducted by investigators in Italy. The therapeutic gene called ADA was introduced into the bone marrow cells of such patients in the laboratory, followed by transplantation of the genetically corrected cells back to the same patients. The immune system was reconstituted in all six treated patients without noticeable side effects, who now live normal lives with their families without the need for further treatment.

6 / 6,000,000,000,000 = a really small number.

Again, I really like your enthusiasm and we both agree it will happen. It's a timing thing. I still remember how micromachines and catheter technology was supposed to "roto-root" our coronary arteries and end heart disease forever. That was 1982 -- and we've still got a little while to go.

Imagine waking up 4 weeks from now and being 77% stronger.

bench goes from 300 to 550 in 4 weeks.

fantasy, but it would be cool
