Some thoughts on your IP addresses and Chairman Members

Members,

I appreciate your expressing your concerns over the IP address issue with the new Chairman Membership. I take the suggestions and concerns of all of our members very seriously.

The IP address feature was designed to help our Chairman Members some of whom are also sponsors. In threads discussing their brands, members lacking the courage to confront our sponsors directly with their real usernames, have been creating alters to make false criticisms and outright lies about our sponsors' products. The IP lookup feature was designed to level the playing field so that Sponsors would not have to defend themselves against the bogus accusations brought about by alters. And instead, the Sponsors could devote their time to addressing valid issues from real customers and real members.

Here is something to remember. The Chairman Members are hand selected by me. I know them, their real names, and I even know where they live. Really. Unfortunately, the only thing anyone knows about any Moderator on any forum on the Internet is that they make thoughtful and informative posts. Who would your rather entrust your IP address to? Someone that I know or someone that no one knows?

One more thing about IPs and Privacy. When you are on the Internet, you need to assume that everything you do is public. It is naive to think otherwise. We have done more than any site that I know of to protect member privacy. We go to enormous expense keeping famed steroid lawyer Rick Collins on retainer and enormous expense sending our Systems Administrator outside the country to work on our servers which are located offshore. But, if you want absolute privacy, use EliteFitness.com Secure Encrypted Email - not PMs or Posts.

With this said, I hear what you are saying and since I always listen to you, not only am I going to take the IP address feature away from our Chairman Members, I am also going to take it away from our Moderators. Going forward, the only people with access to IP information will be Admins and Elite Moderators.

I appreciate your bringing this concern to my attention, because it made me realize that you are absolutely right. Chairman Members don't need IP addresses - it adds almost nothing to the value of the membership. And you also made me realize that Mods don't need IP addresses either. If there is ever a valid reason for one of them to know an IP address, they can ask an Elite Moderator or an Admin and it will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Please also remember that I am not perfect and what seemed like a good idea to me initially became apparent that it was not such a good idea upon further review. Although this is certainly a humbling experience for me, I appreciate your bringing your perspective to my attention so I could address it.

my thoughts are here:

the IP thing is MOOT

stupid to allow it to someone the site admin(s) do not know personally and trust, but as GS just mentioned, these are the exact people that are able to see it. Trusted individuals.

Not just anyone can pay to become a chairman of the board, only those that are hand selected.

REST AT EASE ALL
this thread should be locked, all questions have been answered satisfactorily

I had faith in you Brother - thanks for everything..............

great thread
:)

this should really concern all those of you here involved with AAS

If a chairman posts the ip address of a potential user of illicit substances on this board, then the police can trace that back to the customer at the ISP. It's a trail of betrayal.

way to GS. this is why i stick around. this forum may have it's moments but it is nice to know the powers that be are really listening and looking out for our best interests. there's no place like "home":)

pretty sweet, I set it up and George hits it out of the park once again. Less than 8 hours since it was raised, its resolved. Balance is restored.
Its funny how chat vs. juicer's responded though lol
I should be honorary Chairman for my valuable input such as this issue.
I actually just saw an opportunity to use my Che Guevara pic

Thank you. Great Response.

What else do they have access to? The issue goes beyond just having access. None of us would have known about this, if a certain Chairman Member didn't feel the need to "show off" & post this information.

Has that issue been addressed?

I want to see a list of the "34" people who were invited for COB membership.

LMAO, I only read the begining of GS's post and thought every one here thought that Chair people having access to the IP address was a good idea. I thought "what a bunch of idiots, don't they know or care how bad this is?" but i guess the only idiot here is me.

Thanks for addressing this George.

I wondered why you were posting like that lolol.

How quickly things shift from one end of the spectrum to the other, one thing that I think rings very true

'One more thing about IPs and Privacy. When you are on the Internet, you need to assume that everything you do is public. It is naive to think otherwise'

For me this sums the situation up

A fine and speedy response to a perceived problem.

A big thanks to BrothaBill for being on the ball and raising the issue.

Thanks for listing George and doing the right thing!! :) :)

This is a quote from the 'So, the Mods asked me why Satch's info had not been posted..' topic.

EliteFitness.com as a company and I as an individual know nothing about this guy. We don't have his personal information on file. Furthermore, if we did have it, had he been a customer for example, we still would not post it - we do not share the personal information of our customers or members - it would be in violation of our Privacy Policy.

Read into that what you will.

Also:

Anyone here think Satch and Indy wouldnt have been invited to become 'chariman of the board' either if they were still here......?

thank you so much george this means alot to alot of people.

Great job GS!!!! I knew you'd come thru

I have to agree with TheDon on this one "when on the internet you have to assume everthing is public" especially on a public forum such as this one. I belong to a car forum and can remember a situation that happened that was eyeopenning. Two guys agreed to buy parts of one another, the money was sent but no parts were received, words were exchanged but nothing resolved. One of the Mods ,who happens to be a lawyer, gets involved and to make a long story short...before you knew it out went this guys name, address, phone# s, social security #,his income, jobs he works at, his parents names, his parents address, his high school, college he went to, his transciprts, medical records, his three prior address, his girlfriends name and it went on,on......

Its pretty scary who can get access...If they want it they can get it

STFU already.

I did not know this. But, of course he will not be asked. Remember, it is pretty hard to get banned. The mods need a consensus and only Pamela, Manny, and Velvett are able to actually push the ban button. My only point was that even as a Chairman, there is not really anything he could do to our members.

My last post here disappeared. Of the 34 you said were seslected for COB membership why did Cboogsrun, Newbiebynature and Djsf (Im not dissing you good bros) get invites of the tens of thousands of members. I still want to see a list of the supposedly 34 people selected.

im not getting into this but long story short indy did nothing to help the people on EF and they turned on him when he stood up for a person he believed was his friend...indy for mod :p

Thanks George for squelching some concerns around here man. *golf clap* to you :chomp: :chomp: :chomp:

If you want an answer - just start a new thread.

Otherwise - it gets BURIED here.

George,

Please don't let Indy buy C & C....no matter how much $$$ he throws at you. He is planning on shutting it down if he does! :worried:

Trust is a crazy thing. It's impossible to fully trust anyone, sometimes even oneself. But at the same time, a lack of trust only serves to incite further distrust and corruption from others, so we basically have to wing it and hope for the best. There should be much stricter punishments though for abusing the entrustment of other people's confidential information. Death and dismemberment would be a good starting point.

a.) You know all of our names, and where we all live.
b.) We were doing just fine with moderators and plat members.
c.) I'm sure your heart was in the right place.
d.) I still disagree with the whole thing.
e.) Item a. is fact, items b. thru c. are my opinions.

Its cant believe the two extremes. All day the posts were "im leaving this board" "F ....this board" "im canceling my membership before GS even responds"..... and the list goes on and on.
Now its the Complete opposite. And yes I know its mostly not the same people that were bashing him earlier. But it just surprises me the two extremes. Just goes to show you, dont jump to conclusions, and dont over react until need be :)

Im glad the issue has been resolved

btw, I would go plat if I could afford it right now. im trying to save my money as I should be starting med school, but will go plat when I can

George, Just because we should assume that all we post will be public knowledge. Thats not to say we should make it easier for anyone to obtain this info. Many sponsors come and go. Giving them access because of some problem that might arrise. You could easily reverse that and put the sponser where you have put the member as in the next quote from you
" members lacking the courage to confront our sponsors directly with their real usernames"
The sponsor could do the same and worse.
I truely think this is not a wise idea

OH.. in further reading of another of your posts.. you put it quite well
http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=464091
2nd paragraph. Posting members info would be a violation of your policy. Wouldn't supplying an IP addy or allowing them access be a direct conflict of that policy?

just wondering...thanks.....and I appologize if this is a totally dead/old topic....just don't understand why people would wanna fuck up this board...it's a great place to learn and teach....

Basskiller, did you read what GS posted?

Neither chairmen nor mods. will be able to see IPs anymore, so this is not an issue anymore. The IP topic is closed. GS even went a step further and cut IP access to mods., so he's going all out to take member concerns and put proper rules in place.

The ones who stay five years are tried , proven and well accepted bros. Maybe they will stick around at least until I am too old to buy supps.LOL

BTW, For all of you who are interested, The IP feature does Not Work. GS was true to his word and was very quick about it also.

you must be a source. Where can I get some deka? :)

I guess, the only problem is that with an IP address, all sorts of unsavory things can happen...I doubt any of the sponsors here would do something like that though.

Lets say, for example, you make up an IP like (random):

192.88.168.35

Then run it through certain web based programs....This random IP is from TX...but you can find out whom it belongs to, where they live, etc..if you have the right program. The question is why would you do that? I mean...but I mean...someone would have to really piss you off to actually "use" that information.

With all respect, you cannot find out where someone lives from his IP address. You can get the address for the headquarters of the ISP that owns the IP address. That's it.

I'll admit I was infuriated when this first came out and I was going to jump ship.

After hitting the gym today (and being pleased with my results thus far - which wouldn't have happened without your site) and taking into consideration your reply I am glad to still be here.

Thanks for looking out for our best interests GS and props to you for resolving this in a very timely and professional manner!

Not completely true! Keeping in mind the fact that in your opening statement to the board you mentioned that anything posted on the internet should be considered public. I agree 100% with that statement. Any joker can pay a couple bucks and get the geo. location of an IP if they know what they are doing. Probably not the average moderator here, but regardless, a bad idea considering the topics discussed here.

I am still considering leaving here because of the fact that this was ever even conceived as a good idea. Site admins that you are "flying out of the country" might need them, but for what exactly I would like you to explain. If I missed this explanation in the hundreds of posts prior than my bad. Moderators should not have access to this.

You are correct and much of using an IP's address to accuratly locate someone is largely based on the ISP and users method of accessing this site. Mods here have had access to IP's since day one and they also do by default on every other board I have seen the backend of so dont think leaving here will get rid of the issue if thats your deciding factor.

To add to that this forum is the only one I know of who does have legal council and actually spends money to protect your privacy. Now granted in the past mods ability to see IP's and perhaps bugs with the software were the only primary spot for IP abuse George has seen the concerns and addressed them.
