Ran into an acquaintance who owns a restaurant in town that told me he was closing it for the weekend of the Essence Festival because his entire staff threatened to call in.

Apparently they’re not pleased with the tips they received in previous years.

it's something cultural.........even with the very wealthy. I have no idea why either.......i would think of all people, black people would appreciate a hard working lower income position that relies on gratuity. I know a gtirl who bartended one of lebrons parties..........made almost nothing...........ev en served lebron himself multiple drinks and got $0 from him. oh well, i tip the homeless.......blacks included, so they can do what they want...

i know of one B & B (bed & breakfast) that closes it's doors for "renovation" to avoid having to deal with the essence crowd. this owner tells stories of antique damask comforters found torn up and stuffed under the beds with grease stains from fried chicken and aroma in the rooms from smuggled in collard greens, courtesy robes and towels stolen, many more people than contracted for crammed into the rooms...
