Hey bros.. never posted in this forum before but I have a question-

I have two younger brothers (ages 9,13) that I want to get into MA. As I've read the style really doesnt matter as much as the calibur of the teacher. Anyone know of any good school/instructor in the Detroit (Dearborn) MI area? If it helps zip is 48126. I jus didnt want to end up putting them in a McDojo with no sparring, etc. Any responses appreciated!

I'm nto sure they should be doing solid sparring at age 9
are they into MA or are you living vicariously?

kinda vicariously lol... j/k, no I'm actually into bodybuilding and I didnt necessarily mean the 9 year old would jump into sparring the first instant.. I was under the impression it would be basics for a while? The 13 yr old has boxed and both are into MA.

There is nothing wrong with sparring at nine. Trained a lot of kids in sparring a lot younger than that. I have had a couple of my six year olds win state championships in fighting. My instructor has two younger sons 8 and 10 who have both won state titles and been ranked in the world. It all boils down to the instructor.

go check out some classes and see how things are run.. see if there are other kids there and see if they are having fun or if they look like they are in detention.. see if they are focusing on the basics or are they in costumes dancing around playing ninja

be very leary of contracts especially at there age and if they are just starting.. most good instructors will offer a free lesson to try and then a month to month membership. if they are trying to rope you in to yearly contracts and things like that i would think twice about it.

so make sure you go look at several schools before enrolling them.

good luck

if the 13 year old has boxing training (good boxing training)
most MA instructors could probubly learn some useful things from him
why did he get out of boxing?

I think that there is a very good school in that area. Master Brian Frost runs a Koei kan karate school there. It is a Japanese style with a traditional base and a good real world self defense training style. He is a really good teacher. I am not sure about the actual address. :)

Thanks a lot bro, at least now I have a place to start. If I find it I'll sit through a class and go from there. Thanks!

Basically the training wasnt that great and I felt it wasnt worth it for the money. Nor was I really impressed with the trainers at the gym, so he only did it for a while (was jus doing basics for most of the time). Trying to get them both into some kinda Ma style they can stick to.
