I am not seeing this movie now........look, I've read up on spartan history, I knew this movie in no way told the real story of thermopylae.....but I was still willing to see it. Not now.....not after reading how they grossly they misrepresented true Sparta. I respect Sparta for being some of the greatest warriors of written human history.......but good god, this movie makes them out to be like something out of King Arthurs court. Supposedly, in the movie the Spartans joke about Athenians being fags.......uhhhhh, if you were a spartan boy around the age of 12.......you belonged to a "teacher". That teacher tought you how to fight.........and then sodomized you when y'all got back to the hut. Then the movie makes this deal about Spartans being about freedom this and that......omg, they "lived" off of their slaves. They didn't manage their lands, their slaves did it.....so basically they could work out for a living. Sounds nice huh? And they made Xerxes an 8ft tall homo? WTF was hollywood doing here?

lol...why the fuck would "liberals" need to put a "spin" on the history of the Spartans. I'm just dying to hear the loony conspiracy theory on this one from the crazy right wingers on here.

no way! who would have thought hollywood wouldnt stick to the real history of an event when making a movie anymore!

oh yeah,
the Goat playing a violen in the movie was pretty cool thou

I think they just took LOTS of creative license with the story. I was wondering what the heck was going on too, though, when I saw Xerxes looking like some comic book character looking thing.

Dude, are you serious? You're going to ban the movie because of some creative license?

Didn't you also see an Inconvenient Truth?

ZING!

Working your way toward another 300 post day I see. Guess that six-figure income you k-messaged me about is gonna have to wait another day...

Ok, I'll bite and give you some e-tention, but I know I'm just feeding the monster here. So savor this moment, because I can't pay attention to you like this all that often.

You see, red and I have spirited debates over political issues. He almost always takes a big-goverment, liberal position and I take a minimalist goverment, conservative position. Well, obviously this thread isn't political in nature but rather captures his observation of what he feels is the perversion of an existing story. I decided to have a little fun with his outrage by making an artificial connection to the liberal media. What makes it kinda neat is an analogy can also be subtely drawn to the allegation made by conservatives that the media distorts actual events in the process of reporting on them.

So there. I've explained it *and* given you some attention at the same time. If you need more attention from me, just fire back on this thread and perhaps I'll give you some.

Peace Out!

FUCKER! It's a NEOCONs THREAT!

Before the final battle with the Persians the Spartans were preening their hair, exercising naked and slatheritng oil over each others naked bodies....very pick3. As a right of passage a young Spartan male had to murder a helot (slave) with his bare hands..and not get caught. Roughly 90% of the Laconian population were slaves..... I laughed when I heard some of the trailer dialog.

*ahem* it wasn't based on history
it's from a graphic novel ( comic book, to you unwashed masses )
many of the scenes are picture-perfect recreations from the pages, same perspective and everything

http://www.night-flight.com/fmiller/fmiller300.html

Frank Miller's adventure series 300 is a riveting story of one of the most under-reported and glorious battles of the Persian-Greco war. While Miller has taken substantial creative liberties in reporting the details of his version of the Spartan King Leonidas and his army of 300 valiant soldiers, the events he describes are remarkably accurate.

"There's a scene where the Persian ambassador asks for a token gift of land and water, and a Spartan leads him to a well, and shoves him in, to his death. Like so much that is in this book, that actually came from reality," Miller attests, laughing. "I mean, I moved it around. I take all the liberties any fiction maker does, but the Spartans actually did treat tyrants that way."

If the movie was produced by PBS or The History Channel... I might have been upset, but it wasn't!. It was Hollywood doing what they do best. Giving us a badass flick based on a true story.

How many people do you think went home to after the movie to look up the Spartans on Wikipedia ???

I think it was an awesome flick!

u "read"? what makes that authors interpretation any better than 300's interpretation???

in 1000 years they'll talk about how powerful and godly the US army was in the past 100 years. They'll make movies about it. You think they're wrong? In 1000 years there'l be a guy like you saying 'nah, the us weren't that good - the french kicked a lot of butt too. it's just hollywood trying to make shit up'.

lol @ 'analyzing history'. 30% of this country believes some man came back from the dead and can walk on water. wacky huh?

You want to see a movie that comes out of Hollywood and you expect EXACT, historical truth?

I suppose it wouldnt have drawn a huge crowd to see a bunch of Bufuing spartans greasing each other up and lamenting about how they wish they were back @ home so they could beat thier slaves and sodomize young boys

"what makes that authors interpretation any better than 300's interpretation???"

Oh I don't know........maybe because he drew on facts gathered from well regarded historians of this age and from the age of the greeks............but you're right you.......you got me dead nuts here.............how foolish of me to doubt "zack syder" and "frank miller's" respective interpretation of spartan life and the battle of thermopylae. How could I forget the historical authenticity of violin playing goats, and nearly no armor wearing spartans jumping 20 ft into the air. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say my guy is more historically accurate than yours.........K?

I didn't know the original story and I thought the movie kinda stunk too. I'm not sure I see what all the buzz is about.

It's a movie based on a comic book - you need a good guy and a bad guy. Who the hell wants to sit and watch a movie - all the while - rooting for the "good guys" - a group of slave owning sodomizers? Not me.

There is also the concept of the anti-hero...the other guy just has to be worse.

Standard liberal spin, I'm guessing :)

did you hear the trailers??......"In the worlds first fight for freedom"....????

Now THAT sounds like neocon horseshit if anything......... :)

Spartans were just fighting for their right to keep doin what they be doin........which was to incessantly go to war and enslave as many people as possible............nice model for us to follow.

I feel ya on your rage. I felt the same when I watched the movie of Alexander the Greats life. It was a terrible misconception and made big deal of small things as Alexanders bi-sexuality which was so normal and every-day thing at that age

Must be true then. I saw reefer madness once. Did you know that marijuana makes you beat people over the head with pipes and makes you wan tto jump out of windows. Media/TV/Movies would not make stuff up your facts must be twisted. ! lol! :FRlol:

I once saw a movie that was suppose to be based in 1874 and it had barbed wire in it!! Barbed wire for god sakes! everyone knows barbed wire was invented in 1876.. I took the dvd back to blockbuster and demanded a refund and wrote a nasty letter to the hollywood producer
