Number of shots fired indicates a bolt action rifle. Snipers working with a semi auto usually take follow-up shots. It's also not common for a gun nut to scope an AR-15. They pride themselves of being able to master a scoped bolt rifle.

Ues of the .223 gives a weak indication with a fascination with military type stuff... but a genuine lack of intense knowledge of fire arms. 30-06 or 300 magnum would be more likely choices for an expert.

An AR-15 with proper scope and being sighted to perfection can be deadly accurate from long distance!!! Are you guys sure the caliber was .223???

as for the caliber 223 is effective up to 1000 yds in the hands of a skilled rifleman..
most of the high power shooters are turning to the AR15 in 223/5.56 because of the accuracy and they can put more weight in the gun to reduce felt recoil..
Problem with 223 is that it is very common round everyone sells it so tracing it would be a problem..
colt or bushmaster or other manufactors could be the supplier of AR rifles.
