Lifeguard saves life; Corporation he works for fires him

Lifeguards in Hallandale Beach work for Orlando-based company Jeff Ellis and Associates, which has been providing lifeguard services for the city's beaches and pools since 2003.

Company officials on Tuesday said Lopez broke a rule that could've put beachgoers in his designated area in jeopardy. The firm could ultimately have been sued, officials said.

"We have liability issues and can't go out of the protected area," said supervisor Susan Ellis. "What he did was his own decision. He knew the company rules and did what he thought he needed to do."

Lopez said he was sitting at his post at about 1:45 p.m. Monday when someone rushed to his stand asking for help. Lopez said he noticed a man struggling in the water south of his post. The man was previously swimming in an "unprotected" stretch of the beach, city officials confirmed Tuesday.

"It was a long run, but someone needed my help. I wasn't going to say no," he said.

Company officials said the rescue took place about 1,500 feet south of the company's protective boundaries. The unprotected area has signs alerting beachgoers to swim at their own risk. sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/hallandale/fl-hallandale-beach-lifeguards-20120703,0,5326638.story

Some people just don't understand there is such a thing as bad publicity.....this is it.

yes we should turn over more civic responsabilities to the private sector. If he was hired by the city of Hallandale you think they'd give a shit where he saved a mans life? For as much govt bureacracy as there is there's an equal amount in the private sector, just nobody wants to admit it. The simple answer is each has their place....patrolling beach's obviously isn't for the private sector. Next time one of those dude's see's someone drowning you think he's gonna run off the plantation to help? nope

well...if you don't fire him, now you (the corporation) have taken responsibility for everyone swimming outside of the designated area and, the next time someone drowns in one of those areas, you (the corporation) will get your ass sued off by some douchebag attorney who says that you (the corporation) are responsible for saving everyone now, because you saved the last guy...it's a sad state of affairs...but, blame our litigious society and the ambulance-chasers, not the business owners...they're hands are tied...no good deed goes unpunished.

If there wasnt the threat of lawsuit (govt controlled) the company would not have gave a shit where he saved the guy either.

One stupid corporation doesn't make privatization a bad thing. If so our whole government would be dismantled and privatized.

the public (gov't) beaches have their protection contracted out to private companies. The rules were set and lines were drawn in agreement with the local gov't.

certain elements of base security in asscrackistan and icrack are contracted out to private companies...which makes no sense at all, what with all the fucking marines standing around with guns...but it's reality.

well in this case everyone will win except corp. they will be made to look really bad.

i am glad the guy saved the guys life. he would be an ass if he didn't. always help save a life unless the guy was an asshole ;)

Guy would get fired and the whole world would get sued if he DIDNT go save the guy.

Because the lifeguard was notified by someone of the situation
