ever have your whole life just kind of fucked up by a simple act of calousness?

set down my bag at the gym, talking to the manager. walked over to the pro shop kinda area ,about 20 ft from my bag found a redi to drink MM, came back: no laptop... gone for ever...

every moment of my work and business for the last 4 months, every contact, every email, my business plans, every piece of my business.. every personal everything... every email, every saved MSN conversation, every photograph of my friends my family my kids... every recipe i have added to the database for four fucking months..

gone. all of it.

one calous moment... one stupid moment by me and that assinine moment of awareness that i have no backups for four months and no way to save a fucking moment of that work, those private moments are also now gone for ever...

:worried:

Ohhh man Cheffy, thats my worst nightmare waking up in cold sweats that my pocketpc or laptop was missing with all reports.
If I were you Id make a 500$ reward or some large denomination with a way to return it anonymously.

Too bad there werent any cameras to catch the action

laptops should come with lo-jack or something.....assholes.

Chef,

Get cooperation from the gym on all the members that were there prior to your arrival. Otherwise, go an hour before you did today and watch at the bar who is acting suspicious. TYpically they will steal again. If you catch them, get them outside and give them an offer they can't refuse.

I'm very very sorry for your loss.

thanks for your concern for me... its a bad thing, but i have the love of my family and my health, this really amounts to a bump on lifes road that i can fix... passwords to all accounts are now changed, email, bank, here, etc....

that sucks
sorry chef:(

going to put up the reward poster now.... again, it reminds me that things are not so bad when folks show their concern for a total stranger. I appreciate it.

What a drag man.:( Best of luck on getting the bastard(s) that stole it.

I wish someone would steal my company laptop...because it's a total piece of shit with no information that would be useful to anyone.

Sounds like you're more upset over the loss of the material on the laptop.

Now, what happens if a hard drive crashed? Same thing, without the added kick in the nuts over losing the hardware. Back it up next time.

Look at it this way.....At least it wasn't a year's worth of pictures/work/private info.

Bor, that really sucks.

I learned my lesson with that along time ago and now I only carry a PDA around. Heaven help the person who steals it from me.

oh i know, back up back up.. i did the last time i was Home in iceland, will get it again next week when i am with my family.

Its just some stuff that i can either rework or that really i am better off without anyway... clutter moslty, all the important stuff i can fix myself...

So it goes...

On another note, at least you're not Nick Lachey right now. Or in prison. Cause you're pretty.

do you have it password protected?
Those are beyond easy to crack but the new biometric that is out on think pads now that is something bitch who stoll his laptop would be pretty fucked.

Holy shit that's sad to read chef!!.....and please don't blame yourself for this. Blame on the mexican who stole your laptop and now is selling it in Chihuahua Titikaka. File a report with police and I hope you have the serial number of the pc. If so, call the manufacturer and let them know. Even if your copy of windows was legit, call microsoft; maybe they can track the location.

umm....he just said he lost everything, very personal things, pictures/work/private info.

I don't think he was looking for an I told you so tonight.

Only because I think you share the same hate for humans as I do, I am more than willing to offer my services in this situation.

I will arrive at the gym before they open. Every one of the gym patrons will be asked once where the laptop is at. Upon hearing "what laptop?" I will snap their right arm backwards at the elbow and ask them again where the laptop is. If they still do not know, I'll snap the other arm backwards at the elbow. If they still do not know, then I will just toss them over a cliff to die.

I will continue this until I find the theif, even if it takes years. When I do find the theif, I will snap both of his arms backwards at the elbow, then make him lead me to the laptop. Once I have recovered the laptop, I shall remove the theif's internal organs to toss into my human stew. The emptied carcass will be placed on a pole in the center of town to remind all that would be tempted to steal the fate that awaits them.

I do not mind torturing and killing pathetic humans. I will do this for you.

sadly no cameras, no. and thanks for the support, but i have gotten my full share of I Told You So's tonight, so its not a problem... i should have known better on all counts.

If this is a truely evil person, i am sure they can hurt me savagely with this, one way or the other...

Just a matter of take it like it comes, i have the love of my family and my health, everything else is secondary, right?

.

That sucks, but at least you've made backups of the data. So, it's a pain in the ass, but not catastrophic.

Scat porn collection???

Just kidding bor.....but eh....all you can do is grin and move along. Plus, you have the right attitude, family is the only irreplaceable stuff.

It seems I get shit stolen or misplace something once every few weeks, so I have grown used to not keeping anything uber important on my traveling peripherals.

If you find the guy, send him down here.....he more than likely has my Treo, Blackberry, Laptop, IPOD, and the walkman that got stolen out my locker senior year of high school..........and let the thrashing commence.

well, it will help you to be more guarded in the future, so yes, you do take something away from the experience, just make sure it is positive.

OH MAN! Chef I am so sorry! I hate thieves with a vengence.
I Hope you find who did it , it has to be someone who trains there!

youd be amazed how resourceful people can be when it comes to cracking security codes. i knew some very shift people once upon a time who would strip the motherboard and use a liquid conductor to immerse the board, shorting the battery running to the security memory. then theyd dry it out, reassemble, and boot up

anyway like i said - to the bar! i dont even want to think about losing something like that, i think i would have a cry...especially if i lost my phone numbers :eek2:
im depressed just thinking about it

I'm sorry chef. I really feel your loss right now. I was just robbed myself about 2 months ago, so the pain is still lingering. How about 15 years worth of jewelry (engagement/wedding rings...) taken from your bedroom? Ouch!! You have the right attitude though. Head up, life goes on, but with a slightly different attitude and a more cautious sense of awareness... I know now to activate my alarm system when I leave the house. lol

Something similar to your loss of personal stuff... They also took my camera with pics on it and 5 video tapes of my 3 yo daughter and family. Ehh, maybe I could get another "Kristina's first haircut" somewhere on Ebay. lol I doubt they sell those. It hurtd, I know... head up, and just be more aware... Sorry!

Great idea about the reward thing. That might work somehow. Can't hurt.

well the reward sign in up...

As much as this inconviences me... and my reaction last night was mostly about how this is pretty bad for me personally and financially - hours lost, etc...

Now my sadness about this is really only about how i have inconvienced my friends and in a lesser but still meaningful way my clients...

Hey, for those of you i have affected with this with, among other things, your diet plans or logs or menu work, etc.. i am really sorry i didnt back this up, feel pretty bad about that right now...

.

That stinks. I too have been in your shoes. A few years ago, someone stole my video camera with all the tapes in the bag. My daughters first birthday, my family. The only footage I had of my Mom was in the bag too, and she passed away 4 years ago. Memories of mine are in someone else’s hands. Talk about crying!!! People stink very badly!

I hope someone has some guilt and returns it!

LOL one good thing about not backing stuff up is it teaches you not to make that mistake again it is a very painful one.

did you lose it in a gym in wash dc ? wonder if the guy at the desk saw who swiped it from your bag....feel for ya, one of the two things that you hate to lose, laptop or cellphone.

Heck golds where i train at, last year someone swiped my freaking Champion sweatshirt and replaced it w/one from Kohls Sonoma...is that f'ed up or what...

I would do what mightmouse69 said. Get a list of all the people that entered the gym the two hours prior to your workout. I would also find out who checked in right around that time. Call them and see if they remember seeing someone leave with a laptop. That is not an every day item to see someone with at the gym
Go into the phone book and find all the pawn shops in the local area. Head down to them with a print out of what your laptop looks like. Tell them it was stolen. Give them you contact info.
File a police report also.
On your poster mention "no questions asked" if the laptop is returned to you.

that sucks chef. i know how it feels when my hard drive crashed. but adding the loss of the laptop to a thief does make it worse but i do feel some of your pain. i hope they have security cameras. my gym does and the employees hate it cause the owner sits at home on the internet and watch's them and then calls when they are sitting around doing nothing.

but hopefully they have the thief on camera. good luck and if you catch em, call me ill help remedy the situation...

i got a dell laptop with a cracked screen ill give you for free if you want it..

its less than a year old too.. pm me if you want it.. just need you to send me like 10 bucks for shipping so it gives me some incintive to get off my ass and go ship it lol.. :)

Thanks mon, good advice, all done already but good just the same thanks

1. Sadly, its a very big Golds, and in the two hour space in rush hour over 200 people were in and out...

2. The cop that filed the report for me had me call in the serial numbers from my receipts, they auto contact all the 'registered' pawn shops, the sad part is that if this was a pro, that matters not, but if it was some schmuck, it might work.

3. See above

4 Did that, exactly, no questions asked, just meet me anywhere you like and exchange and walk away.

Its gone, I have my health and family and a few great supportive friends, this is just a bad thing that will, i hope, not get worse and just be a hiccup at lifes table. So it goes.
