Is Vista worth upgrading to or wait for Windows 7

I've heard a lot of people say Vista is much better now. If I get obviously I'd want the 64 bit OS but what about compatibility (software/peripheral driver support)? Also is the OS any more efficient or is it still a memory hog even if its tuned?

I'm upgrading my processor from a 2.4 ghz core 2 duo to a 2.66 ghz quad, and have 4 gigs ddr2 800. Will I notice any performance improvements going from 32 bit XP to 64 bit Vista?

Thanks for any info on this.

From, a Vista Skeptic.

As long as you have 4 gigs of ram you will have a great experience with Vista, the biggest problem with people hating Vista is because they have old computers that have not enough ram ....

You should do just fine with those stats. ...

I think Vista is fine, if your going to be upgrading your hardware you my as well upgrade to Vista.
Windows 7 sounds like it will be far superior, but it's Microsoft, so who knows when it will actually be released.

Yeah, my problem with Vista crashing is memory. It's ridiculous how they sell new laptops with Vista but not enough memory for stupid graphics crap that adds absolutely nothing unless you're a graphics programmer.

I blame video games for this. I just wanna /dir.

I'm running windows 7 on my desktop but its quad core with 8gb of ddr2-1000 memory.

I put windows 7 32 bit on my single core laptop with 2gb of memory and it still flys! Windows 7 as a prebeta is just as fast as XP in my experience. Everything is really fast.

I recommend waiting until windows 7 personally. I never liked vista.

Nice. Yea, I hear this is the first Windows beta that has been working so well it's almost good enough to be final.

oh so you are a sql or oracle programmer are u??

why do you need 64 bit processing??

linux or get an oem... never upgrade..

Over the next year 32 bit will slowly become replaced by 64 bit apps. I'd be doing a fresh install anyway, likely with a new HDD.

lol funny you mention Oracle. A coworker of my dad's has a son who co-wrote some data compiling software and Oracle bought it for about $6 million. Oh and he's got a degree in political science lol.

support for 32 bit apps will still be good for the next 5 years.

too many legacy devices for MS to kill the 32 bit os completely.

Why dont you download the windows 7 beta and see how you like it before you commit?

Those two words should never be in the same post lol. A more accurate blame would be the general public who prefer flashy things over functionality, and MS for actually giving it to them. Capitalism is all just trial and error really.

I'd want to reformat before installing a beta OS. Damn me for not making a bigger partition.

Yeah you're right it will be a while before it's killed, I should've clarified 64 bit availability vs replacement. I want to at least have 64 bit support for the software that's using it already. Most of the major software players have 64 bit versions out now. I read that 32 bit support in 64 bit Vista is actually pretty good, and each has their own program folder. Vista sounds good now for the most part, but Windows 7 sounds even better and it's still only in beta.

use partition magic, change the size within windows.

Use vista boot manager once you're dual booting make which ever OS you prefer to boot into the default one. Then change the time out from like 20 seconds to 5 seconds.

Thats what I did.

Damn that sounds cool. Worth a try. Have you used it, just curious about how it coexists with what's physically on your pc and how it impacts performance. Is it just like installing a hard copy of the OS on your drive the traditional way?

Yes..
It works great. I used VMWare before, but I imagine Virtual PC works the same. You dedicated as much resources to the setup as required. :)

So it's a battle between Partition Magic and Virtual PC....

Well Virtual PC is easy.. I'd try it out, if you don't like the performance, go the partition magic route. :)

Yeah it's worth a try to try out Windows 7 at least. I'll see how it works and post up.

.....shit I need XP Professional, Home's not supported apparently.

Apparently it will still work on Windows XP Home. It will just give you an error saying the OS Isn't supported, you should be able to ignore it and continue.

Cool. You sure wouldn't know what to make of all the supposed Vista problems looking at these reviews-

It sounds like it's mostly just a lack of 64 bit software support as of yet.

eh I wouldnt worry about that.

I use XP 64 and Windows 7 x64 and haven't had any problems.

You need acrobat 9 to print to pdf from files in XP 64.

I run all kinds of engineering programs on it.

I figure by the time I upgrade my OS 64 bit driver support will be even better. Vista sounds tempting but I'll still wait til some benchmarks come out for Windows 7.

I wouldn't install Vista, just keep running XP.

64 support??? Don't worry about that for now.

I've been on the leading edge of computers and usually you get nothing out of being a head of the curve. It's like buying a bleeding edge video card. $500 and really no software will take advantage of it for a year or so after the card comes out. Then the $500 card is now $200 and you didn't miss a thing.

I ran Win 98SE till after XP SP1 came out. 98 worked fine for me and there was zero reason to upgrade until a XP got a good up dating. The only problem I had was I wanted to buy a new video card and the new ones didn't have drivers for 98. I still have a computer running 98 to this day.

I'm still running XP and I have Vista professional sitting next to me on the shelf, got it for free. I won't even install an MS product until they release SP1. :)

XP is a good OS though. I wouldn't replace it until it craps out on me and Vista is shown to be better all around. Right now they're about neck and neck, but Vista does require a lot more memory in general.
I'm hoping Windows 7 is a more efficient Vista.

use v-lite and slipstream SP1 into that copy of vista.

Still running a computer with 98? jesus, lol.
What do you use it for? Paper weight?

I've been running Vista for a while now, I like it.
It has loads of benefits over XP..
You don't need to stay a head of the curve, but there are benefits to keeping up with it. I can't remember exactly but I think Windows 7 is expected for this summer, although Microsoft always gets delayed so I'd expect it around Winter.

Honestly, it sounds like your computer will be able to handle Vista nicely, so you my as well upgrade and reap some benefits while you await Windows 7. :D

My 2 Cents.

I have a HP pavilion dv6000
running XP
I have a AMD turion 64 precessor
2GB ram

will this handle windows 7?
Computer is only two years old

Yes.

I was running it on my HP pavilion DV8000 with a turion64 and 2gb of memory. It was snappy. Booted very fast.

do you have to buy a disc 4 windows 7? Or is it a download?

It ain't even technically out yet, but UA knows ways around that lol.

I'll install it through Virtual PC '07 when the beta is released, this week I think. There'll be plenty of links to download it by then.

I just did it last night through virtual PC '07.

Easy as cake.

I have a rapidshare account so I downloaded the beta in record time.

The Win 98 in a full function TV, DVD, game player for my kids. I have some old not violent games like Tiger woods golf and 1500 old NES etc games on it. Works fine for them. Not hooked to the internet so no security issues. No new software or hardware so why upgrade the OS? Basically that computer will simply get parts I take out of my main computers when I upgrade which I don't do often. Some day it will get win XP. LOL.

Vista does what better???? As far as I'm considered it's windows ME and should just be skipped until the next OS. Personally I would like a stripped down OS because I use very little of windows built in features.
