Is life less random after college?

My life seems so random and unstructured lately. I kind of look forward to graduating and getting that job, I feel like it would add so much structure. I kind of hope that the real world is more like a movie in that it actually has a plot line.

Can anyone tell me if you think life will kinda become more routine in the real world (For the age range of like 23-29, not married but dating, accountant.) I wanna work for the government if that helps anything....like the IRS.

Government jobs FTW. Lots of people wish they had govt jobs :)

Private sector - if you go for a job purely for the paycheck - welcome to cubicle monkey hell. And you though high school was drama? Clearly you've never worked in an office or warehouse. :)

Structure = Doing what your boss tell you to do. Come in at X time, out at X time. Work fast and then peruse ebay = evil stares from co-workers.

And the women are fat middle aged hags. You're gonna miss college. :)

Yes it will, you will enter the world with an accounting position with a big 5 hopefully. Your first year, you will probably be assigned auditing and reguired to work 55-60 hours per week.. Once the company has faith in your abilities, they will move you inside..Now in the meantime, you are earning 45-65,000 per year. Dating is every weekend and occasionally during the week however you will be far to busy with 1st year accounting to have time for much during the week. So, yes you will find structure...

Life is what you make it....

You will seek a routine because it's human nature...play the political game but don't get married. That's my advice...

Honestly, I've made the worst decisions in life under the influence of alcohol and pussy.:) I gave up the alcohol, joose and the poon... I'm more successful than I have ever been in life....I do love the poon...I'm a primate...I don't worship it.

Im about to that point to pal.. I gave up drinking, never gambled .. and now all I need to do is get rid of the poon.. Im with you....

Life will become so routine that you will make you fucking sick! Unless you dont get married, then life will be what you want it to be.

if you want a structured life then create it..you dont need to be out of college to stop being stupid.

Rocky, get yourself a Harley and see the world. That's pretty much what my sister did/does and she's been to 6 of the 7 continents (including Antartica), is now a lawyer, teaches and continues with her studies. *sigh* See, you don't want to be like me and wished you had lived that life.

Only if you want it to be. Most people fall into line and do what they are told to do eventually. Get married, buy a house, get a dog, have a kid, do yard work, dinner with the in-laws, die.

But some of us actually enjoy the random and end up in the reverse situation as you - I find myself fighting as hard as possible to fend off the structure and routine that the world shoves down our throats.

it's always a battle

Agreed!

I am right there with you

May I ask what you mean by "structure"?

I CRINGE at the very thought of it. :worried:

I suppose there are those that crave the box and those that would suffocate at the mere mention of it.

Not saying there is anything wrong with *the box*. Just saying that I would rather wait until they nail mine shut, no need to rush it.

I resent that. WVU is a great school.

Never said it isn't. But a Yalie and a state flagshipper will have vastly different opportunities in life. That's just one of those life facts: prestige and pedigree matter. A starting salary of $65k for a non-EE/ME/CS BS degree is highly unlikely, even in a high COL area like Cambridge or Palo Alto.

Also, to be fair, UG degrees are pretty worthless nowadays. They're similar to our parent's HS degrees. I'd highly recommend a MS in accounting or something CPA- or actuarial-track (depending on how much upper-level stats and FM you've had).

I do think accounting is one of the stronger and more marketable degrees out there amidst a sea of bullshit degrees.

Also, the more work experience/internships you get before you graduate with x degree, the more desirable you will be. I think this is highly understated today, especially ITE.

Sweet, thanks for the advice Samoth. And subz, I would shake your hand as a fellow college student, but you're a little far away.

You'll need it to sit for the CPA exam, if I remember correctly.

I'm on this sort of networking high.

Basically what I want to do is work for a few years in the public sector (Big 4 Firms) just for the experience. I also think that this is a nice place to be when you're young: travel, meet coworkers, work a ton of hours (that's gotta build commodore, right,?) and get that corporate/yuppy experience. Date on the weekends when I'm not away. The thing that would be toughest about it for me is getting the exercise in. Knowing me I would exercise at 10:30 at night as soon as I get home if it's been a terribly long day and then miss out on a little sleep if I have to.

But after a few years or so I would definitely get sick of that and require a more normal schedule/work hours, so that's where the government can come in....Hopefully...to bail me out of the corp. world. Heh.

I have two leadership programs this summer through KPMG and PWC that will hopefully lead to an internship next summer. I'm most likely working as a bank teller this summer.

I hafta go to school summers,2.

Not necessarily. In West Virginia you need 150 hours, whether they come from UG or Grad doesn't matter. I can obtain 150 hours from just 4 full years of UG.

Correct. It is this way in most states, I believe. However, the 150 hours typically requires 4+1 years, as most people don't push 20 credits every single semester and use summers to pick up work experience.

Seriously, if you have a chance to take an internship/co-op or something that will give you WE, even if it means you graduate a little later, fucking do it. It will put you ahead of your peers/competition and make you so much more desirable. With the financial sector devastated, there are so many underexperienced degree-holders out there looking for work it's not even funny.

I had high school credits. I don't do summer school......ever. And i've had jobs since Sophomore year of high school. I've got the W.E.

Good girl. U wore head protection.
Good pic.

Yea, I go in the summers bc I made a deal with my dad. If I go all year long, he pays all the tuition so I won't have any school dept when I'm done.
Damn good deal. I couldn't pass it up.
My undergrad isn't cheap and tha med school I hope to attend is 25,000 more a year than all the other med schools in the state.
So, yea. I'm goin summers,2.

Agreed, I have always done things backwards mit seems in regards to the social norm timeline. I now find all of my married with kids friends being miserable and living vicariously through me.

I do envy certain parts of their lives but do not regret having made the decisions I have thus far.

summary: do what feels good but in moderation with no expectations and you will live the dream.
