Is it possible to work out of a depression without meds?

great post

Agreed.

Lots of good advice in this thread, period. I went through a two year long depression in the early 90's...kind of on and off, but never used any drugs (didn't know where to get them or what kind to use), so I just worked my ass off to take my mind off of things, and listened to music. It worked for me.

Good luck maing..hope things get better soon.

I mean, if you don't have any history of depression or anything... And it hits you hard for 3-4 months... Is it possible to normalize on your own without meds?

"Bi-Polar" like? If it's Bi-Polar trust me meds are the answer. That said Bi-Polar is one of the disorders that can be easily controlled with meds and the person can live a very normal life.

That's awesome to hear. Many people can't do it alone. Some don't even have the energy to "work their ass off to take their mind off of it," - Many people are afraid of the "stigma" attached to taking medication - nothing wrong with using them if you need it but if you can do it without - that's awesome.

P.S. Like the quote you have below.

I do not agree with this statement. I think intelligence, wisdom and knowledge play into bi-polar disorder to a degree, as well as other personality traits, and they can help individuals acclimate (or go the other way) to such mental disorders. It is always easier to deal with something if you understand it.

I have seen being bi-polar tear people apart all on its own and meds do seem to help some of those people. For me, however, meds don't tend to work. They can help but they have always come with other side effects that I wasn't willing to deal with. Learning more about myself was always the best solution, for me at least.

Are you bi-polar?

You have to understand that most people....or a large percentile do not possess the will power, intellect, wisdom to control their disorder. Thus, why medication is crucial. An emotionally unstable person coupled with this disorder= omg bad.

I'm dealing with one in my life now. Even IF a person does have the intellect, wisdom, etc....they have to want to change. Most people never get to that point.

I could list off the various mental disorders I was diagnosed with when I was a kid but won't - I'm normal I swear. :) Bi-polar disorder was one of them though, yes.

And believe me, I know exactly what you mean. I have a friend or two who is bi-polar and they prolly should be on meds if you ask me. They aren't able to get a hold of it on their own, at least not in the last few years. I'm not saying I have it all figured it out but I definitely think it is worth a person's time to reflect on themselves when they feel they are going through something like this. I try to spend more time listening since I find my head is simply preoccupied with other thoughts that can make it difficult to be ont eh same wavelength as everyone else - and that seems to be the issue with other people I know who are bi-polar. Just shut up and relax, basically.

I think part of the advantage I have in this regard is that I went through all this shit pretty bad when I was still a kid, which is a slightly more acceptable time - though not to your peers anyways. I can't even imagine starting from scratch at this point in my life. What a mess that'd be.

don't shy away from a mental health profressional, might as well use all available options, its up to you to start and continue any treatment plan.

I fancy myself as being a very strong willed individual. I can rationalize my way out of any emotion or impulse. I can make my brain carry my body thru some extremes that most people would just fold under.. I have been like this since I was a child...

The part that has me all fucked up is the stuff that is out of my control. I can work thru and around my own issues... But when you mate or you kid are involved... It gets much, much harder...
