In this thread, we discuss all things metal.

I didn't know you were into black metal, Maj!

I don't think Powerslave's a big black metal fan, more death and power metal.

What era Emperor? I think it's pretty obvious Samoth is an Emperor fan :D until that whole Peccatum incident, ugh...

And Mayhem, same question?... they've remained pioneers of the scene for almost two decades, and the center of the whole '90's BM controversy in Norway. I never got into the newer Grand Declaration sound, but it's still amazing. Deathcrush was their cult classic... and I say this only 'cause I've never been a huge fan of Euronymus, lol.

the only blackmetal I really listen to anymore is Immortal. I prefer my vocals to sound like the cookie monster instead of squeezing a rat :)

It's not that I feel guilty or anything, I just like having the real thing... and sound quality seems to be poor often on the DL'ed stuff. At least the one month or so I used Kazaa my frosh year, on '01. I'm sure it's improved. I used to get free or really cheap demo CD's, the ones identical to the official releases but in cardboard sleaves, from the Milwaukee Metal Shop back in the day, but even then I still wanted the CD, lol. Then again, this is coming from s guy who has four different copies of Seventh Son. And no, don't ask why, lol.

POWERSLAVE!! You rule! I actually like going through other metal friends' CD collections and lists of what they got.

Maybe the same reason I have three versions of their earlier releases. They are all different. I have the original, the first re-isssue(contained b-sides on a second disc), the second re-issue(enhanced liner notes, cd-rom stuff and when put in order make the Eddie from the first disc).

HA! I'm not alone!

But do you have the double-disc one? Those got bloody expensive once they went OOP. I had several when they first came out, but I sold them for some reason. I've picked a couple up I've come across for normal price, but that's very rare.

Crap, I just realized what you wrote. Those weren't the first re-issues, were they? I have two copies of Seventh and Piece of Mind, and both are very old. Similar, but some different label markings and dates.

You like Satyricon at all? Garm and his 376 different projects? Vintersorg? ANY Borknagar?

Opinions no one asked for:

Prometeus: blah blah is my favorite Emperor album. Can't really get into the other stuff. Peccatum put out a new EP this year and while it's not as bad as the other stuff, it's not good either. Samoth, Faust, and Trym are doing great stuff with Zyklon. Tchort is turning out solid stuff (Blood Red Throne, Green Carnation). Mortiis...is Mortiis...sigh.

Epoch of Unlight is okay. The new twelve minute Arsis song slays it though.

I actually like Chimera more than anything Mayhem has done with the slight exception of maybe De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

Oh, and I can't stand Satyricon, haha. More Spiral Architect! Go with the better band guys!

Really? I've never heard many people take the newer Emperor sound over the classic Nightside. My personal favorite was Anthems, the entire album, sound, production just had a flow to it that I thought blended perfectly. And it was such a huge step in a different direction from Nightside. We were all pretty hyped for IX, but it was a general disappointment for most of us. Granted, I really liked it and all, but it was just... too big a step in a different direction. Warriors of Modern Death was one of/the best song on the album, but their style and direction didn't sit well with the old-school BM fans who disliked anything past 3rd gen BM.

I honestly didn't think anyone in the world listened to Piccatum's debut more than once. I thought it was horrible... and lots of people agree with that. To be fair, though, I've heard nothing from the act since.

And LOL @ being polite and mentioning Mortiis. (Umm... so are those ears and nose REALLY real, ie., permanant? Umm....)

Chimera is the only official full-length I never picked up. Heard some, didn't really seem impressive. That's around the same time period we started seeing bootlegged Morbid CD's around, so we were still grabbing all the old stuff.

I'm the only person I know that never liked De Mysteriis. I just never cared for Euronymus's vox in general, but especially on that record. The only thing worse would be Pure Fucking Armegeddon... but I honestly couldn't discern much on that recording anyway, so there may not have even BEEN vocals, lol. (note to all: DON'T buy Pure Fucking Armegeddon. Horrid recording.)

Really? None of their stuff? The last thing I bought from them was the EP before volcano, after Satyr turned into trailer-park trash. We caught them live around that time, and he seriously looked like an idiot. Stained and torn size medium white undershirt and no hair. The music was still good... but a pain to see compared to the Nemesis Divina video's...

I've never heard Spiritual Architech, but it sounds Vintersorgy. lol

my two favorite musics are jazz and metal (making atheist a secret favorite . . . )

I don't like "death metal" crypto/morbid/etc per se.
Don't get some "doom metal", but do like the sludgier side like Eye Hate God.
But so-called "black metal" with the philosophical/spiritual stuff, especially when mixed with thrash type blast beats.

I really like Epoch of Unlight, for example. I loved Arsis' last album, and pimped it all over the place. I hadn't heard the new one, flah, but I'm sure it kicks. I do like the thrashier quality of epoch though. I like god dethroned too, all that kind of stuff. Flah, samoth, ps, anyone that can recommend further black metal i'd like clue me in, as my ears are always open.

I don't listen to black metal but every 1-2 months, but today I woke up on the wrong side of the apocalypse!

At my age, the bands I'm trying to form are jazz bands, as nearing-40 year old black metal artists look goofy. But I listen to black metal on my stereo whenever I brake from studying bebop cuts.

Peccatum's debut is quite possibly one of the worst things I've ever heard. To this day, I've never met anyone that liked it. Some of their later stuff picked up some fans. The new one is worth a look if you're super interested in hearing where they went. It's not very far though.

New Ulver > that and I find the new Ulver to be kind of annoying.

Emperor is one of those bands who I own all their big releases yet don't really get into them that much.

From what I have: Prometheus > Anthems > Nightside > IX Equilibrium

PFA sounds horrible but it has some okay songs. De Mysteriis is one of those records that everyone has to own. I like it a lot but maybe that's because it was one of the first black metal albums I ever heard. It has a nostalgic quality. Same with Transilvanian Hunger, Under the Sign of Hell, and Pure Holocaust.

Spiral Architect is like tech near power metal in the vein of Watchtower but with crazy bass lines. I love it.

I only owned Dark Medieval Times and heard the rest through various people. It's been a long time but I remember really not liking it.
