In this thread, we discuss all things metal.

Anyone who wants to check out metal lyrics, hit up www.darklyrics.com. Very respectable, organized, easy-to-navigate and searchable. Free - no signup needed.

Flah will probably be able to answer your question better, with more concise and to-the-point recommendations to supplement my gibbering ramblings attempting to draw parallels to your original comment.

Hmm... lol, I wonder if this or Swano's Edge of Sanity CD was released first.
Crimson still has very varied parts. I mean, Dopesmoker (which was originally recorded somewhere between 92-96, it was delayed because no one wanted to put it out) is a song in the simplest of senses. There's a verse section, a chorus, and a bridge. That's it. There's not even really a chorus. Essentially there's one riff that evolves (or devolves), some solos, and a section where they strip away the distortion. It's just insanely heavy. Almost trance inducing.

And it's an hour and three minutes.

Corrupted bested them with an hour and eleven minute song this year. They've really been pushing the boundaries of how long a song can be.

Bunkur wrote a long ass song that pushes an hour too.

I'll check out more MBD probably later this week. People have been harrassing me for months now. I'll take the plunge.

Okay, I haven't picked up the newest Vintersorg yet, but he's obviously continuing down the same lyrical/conceptual path. If only he could create the feeling and atmosphere of Wintry Grey...

"Matter creates a play, persistent and keen,
Where the night have opened its curtain
Harmonic pictures on the sky's enormous screen
With a contra positioned twin hiding within"

Faster, twice as fast than the gravitation equation permits,
Is the rotation of the celestial spheres
But if Einstein's calculation to this failure admits,
We wouldn't even know about the calculation's fears,

That the: gas clouds in galaxy clusters have a too little mission,
While wearing dark halos of matter
They would need four times of their gravity erudition
To silence our question's patter, (about the)

Dark matter mystery,
Blackbody spectrum,
An interstellar medium
We're tracing lost energy
That's swallowed by an unplanetary tum
At the worlds bivium

Like a shadow to the starfeild's determinism,
The invisible twin follows its pace
Comprehensible monism changed to indefinable pluralism
Is it super-symmetry's surrounding face? (in a)

[chorus]

Are we wrong in our definition of mass and weight?
Or, is a subatomic particle playing hide and seek?
'Cause light is missing to pronounce cosmos' fate,
While, mass discrepancy drains through a major leak

Brown and white dwarfs two candidates,
Black holes and neutron stars two others
But through multitudes of observation of their states,
We know that gravitational leansing hide their mothers (it's a)

[chorus]

"Like Bell, I connect my senses to the vast
Stellar mirror, where signals bounces from clast to clast"

Interesting...

1. Prologue Dialogue - The Reason

[Man:]
Our evolving existence
Is the wording of our endless strife

[Matter:]
(silence)

[Man:]
I'm built by you, but you live only through me
A paradox that I still escape

[Matter:]
(silence)

12. Epilogue Metalogue - Sharpen Your Mind Tools

[Man:]
Our evolving existence
Is the wording of our endless strife

[Matter:]
But what about my assistance?
Of granting you these questions of life

[Man:]
I'm built by you, but you live only through me
A paradox that I still escape

[Matter:]
But, it's by that clue that your thinking can be
The reader of my numerous shapes

So, sharpen your mind tools,
your grammar of logics refines
And sharpens your mind tools,
Cause the thinking of thinking evolves your thinking
Mind tools,
Reasoning dug forth from inner mines
With sharpened mind tools
Your awareness is kept from sinking,
Into sleep

[Man:]
But the principle of awareness stretches
In our nerves, longer than the ecavator

[Matter:]
I'm your sensible nerve that fetches
Your views. Your thoughts resonator

So, sharpen your mind tools,
your grammar of logics refines
And sharpens your mind tools,
Cause the thinking of thinking evolves your thinking
Mind tools,
Reasoning dug forth from inner mines
With sharpened mind tools
Your awareness is kept from sinking,
Into sleep

It still irks me how they say "logics" and "maths" over in Europe, lol.

I'm interested to see the extent to which Vintersorg retained his rarely-changed musical and vocal style. Except for the early folkey stuff with BM interludes, he's been pretty consistant in both Vintersorg and Borknagar.

Solefald is worth a look if you want...dare I say...literate metal. They put out the first part of a two part epic this year. They've done some really out there concept albums. A lot of people are driven off by the punky vibe that some of their sections have but they are a really neat band.

Hey Powerslave, just curious if you collect vinyls? (or anyone else here)

:cow:

I have not bought a vinyl record since sometime in the mid/late 80's. I do have all the old Kiss albums on vinyl and Maiden's Live After Death double album. Which at the time was different than the cassette and both of those were different than the VHS tape (which I have as well). I wish they would put that on DVD.

I really like the 1349 and the Leviathan Flah! Those both appeal to me. Probably the Leviathan slightly more once I appreciated the atmospheric touches a little.

Samoth, everyone tells me to check out Ulver. I've not done this. People also say Abigor. Is this similar?

I will plough through some more. I guess I really me not so much spiritual as in lyrics, as in spiritual as in radiating a tripped-out vibe. That's why I like the Leviathan; it's creepy. I drift to the alternative slice in every genre.

Careful with ulver, you'll get everything from ear-splitting black metal recorded on a four track to non-metal folk to technoish trip-hop.

Maybe something kinda ambient like Neptune Towers? Mortis?

Ulver has one of the best background stories in BM. From recording in a forest to taking promo shots in sun glasses. Sweet.

Maj, you should take a quick look into some dark ambient/drone/noise stuff.

Lustmord - The Place Where the Black Stars Hang (classic)
Sunn 0))) - Black One (this album is just goddamn evil)
Atrium Carceri - Cellblock (found these guys the other day)
Lotus Eaters - Mind Control for Infants (ft. Plotkin and Aaron from Isis)
Merzbow - Merzbuddha (this is pretty good as far as his 21st century stuff is concerned)
Namanax - Monstrous (very underrated American noise artist)
Oren Ambarchi - Triste (did some work on Black One)
Skullflower - Orange Canyon Mind (this will drive you insane if you let it)
Prurient - Black Vase (a whoooole lot of feedback. Comparable to Air Conditioner)
Boris - Dronevil (their drone stuff is just miles beyond their rock stuff)

If you want something that's going to be a kick in the gut:

Whitehouse - Birdseed
Sutcliffe Jugend - When Pornography is no Longer Enough

Extreme power violence. The vocals can be so over the top they sound goofy but the message is startling and just demented.

Or even...UNHOLY PULL OF THE MOON! Haha, I hope that gets a chuckle out of Samoth.
