If you were starting your own supplement store....

What products would you start out with? Defnitely got to have the basics but you ALSO cant be like every other store.

I think having stack is important too.

I would start off with a fat burner, protein, creatine....

But then you gotta have something that makes you stand out. What could this product be? Im trying to research still but open to any ideas and suggestions!!

You want to beat all of the online stores.. Find the cheapest prices or products and then drop your price 1$, have a flat shipping rate and become sponsors of boards.. But, you better have a good amount of startup money and some advertising guru friends.

I hear ya man...but a couple things

-It would be MY products. So I would NOT have a minimum price to sell it at.

-I am not spending 30k on advertising, no need. Im not trying to pull in 100k a year profit, just maybe 500 bucks profit a month? not too unrealistic. Then of course maybe later I could expand

My brother has an online store and he makes 50k net a month. Its not sports nutrition, but he knows manufacturers, web design people, and he will fund it for now and just take in the profits until he gets paid half of what it cost to get the store running, and then we will split it 50/50
 
And make sure you have everything tested by Gawd first.
Can't stress the importance of that enough.

Besides that, one thing I'd like to see if a Post Workout additive.
So a flavorless creatine, carb, etc. mix, that can just be tossed into whatever protein you have.

Definitely gonna have some protein, creatine and I'm already designing my own fat burner :evil: But I need to start thinking of some things that will set me apart...funny because even a really good label can set a supplement apart.

This is quite a competitive industry. Selling products that everyone else sells and not having a way to advertise spells trouble to me.

Well my brother has a 4,000+ database of emails from his customers so that will help. And Im gonna set up blogs, go to google adwords, and youtube, etc.

And my fat burner will be unique :)

4,000 is not a lot. Especially considering they are random emails and not the kind that us supp guys already have.
I have a blog, this is something that I suspect you do not have full understanding of. Google Adwords is EXPENSIVE and considering the keywords you want are used by every other person who has a fatburner good luck with that. You are talking about an industry in which I work and know all of this.ALSO... I already told you your
focus should be on putting out weekly youtube videos now. You never followed through with that.
 
After you come up with innovations and a plan, join the closest Masonic Lodge (Temple).
 
You would need good experienced Sales Reps for companies like NTBM & Orbit whom i would be happy to endorse, and a great line of products backed by customer support second to none, orbit & NTBM have excelled in this department numerous times,try that with other supplement companies!
 
if ur product can produce results,if its has a cool name,cool label,it is DOABLE..i say i would go the youtube route,i am doing this soon making my own youtube fitness channel,more of a hobby for me..and if ur product is affordable then there is no reason u could not be succesful..wafter u make ur product,and they WORK what i would do is go to your local gyms front them like a couple bottles for free tell them to seel it for whatever price they want keep all the profit ,see how fast they sell ,then who knows ur gym might be ur biggest custumer

damn great idea bro! IM really wanting to do this, I know it will be hard and may not be succesful at first but i still wanna try. I could even get some reviews together and logs as evidence
 
I can attest to how much Youtube videos can boost sales. If you want to know, just ask Needto about the videos I made him. Whether they hate it or love it, as long as they are talking about it then you're money. If you do a video, please please please make it different and make it of the utmost excellent quality!!!

Now get to makin yo money kid! I got your back!!!
 
The supplement business is like the bar business -- you can make a lot of money but you're more likely to go broke trying.
 
For me,, the places I patron are the stores that are different from the commercial franchises, up here in Toronto. Places that sell Canadian banned sup's like Yohimbine: Acetyl L-Carnitine: Red Rice Yeast: etc,, shiet even 17aa tabs and m1t but all tht ish is under the table. Reason why im stating this is bcuz it sets him "Apart" from all other stores and Word of Mouth advertising Speads "FAST" and there is no monetary cost for that advertising,, just "risk". Places I go Have what I want,,, and are at the right location,, and always take bucks off the total especially if u buy more stuff,,,, to me "in store" shopping is the shizznitt,,, there ain't no Customs , ther aint no Ship and handling, u get to touch , hold it, do your own inspections (check expirations stamps) etc, plus you leave wit samples and sumtimes t-shirts. For me it seems( like everyone has stated), Online thers TOO much of the same thing!!! what will separate you from the pack? Prices? Product? gdluck. Personally,, i say sumone front me half a mill and i'll open a Supp Store where all my customer service reps are dressed lik the Hooters waitresses but are knowledgable (if thts posible), and I'd have everything in my store that Orbit has and then some (On consignment so what i dont sell b4 expirey the company takes back at cost, so there no loss for me.... lol in a perfect world mayb.
 
^^ i agree i have a dream..in my small town i have 2 shack crack hole in the wall gyms,,ima bulid my own gym in the next 2-4 years and put both of them out of busniess

We also know him better. He has never taken any of our advice before, He will not either. We like glad, but you just can't back get Rich quick schemes all the time that have no planning at all.

same thing happened in my town. then a Golds came in and put them both out of business. there is still a Y open but its for the old people and kids.
 
how bout one of those 30 minute late night infomercials? i have thought about doing one of those. it is a risk though, but imagine if you sell 10000 of whatever product for $20.. thats 200K minus ad costs. its a gamble but if you have a product that hits you can make a ton. costs $2 to make and you sell it for 20

Thanks guys, i DEF have some good ideas. I need to start marketing some stuff like youtube like lartinos said, get word of mouth out. I will have some ppl testing my products before I sell them so Im not gonna sell anything that doesnt work.

I also wanna set something up like free gifts when you order, or your total order adds up and gives you points and money off your next purchase. Def have some BOGO free offers. And I want to have an overall athletic approach, not just sports nutrition. I want stuff like balance, joints, sleep, workout, energy, endurance, and health in there. Ill be writing articles and hopefully have a forum soon. I could even start local and get some ppl locally onto my forum, then have them buy and try my supps, and spread word of mouth from there as well.

He sells a lot of the same stuff everyone sells like antioxidants, immune supprt, etc and he racks in some good money (50,000( per month. He knows people and can help financially to get me started.

My dad is a chiropractor so he can refer patients to my store as well. My youtube videos should help too if I start getting more views. I already have 130,000 views on a rap beat I made a couple years ago.

I dunno what the big deal is about Golds. The one here blows big time. Did a trial membership thing and didnt go back. They harassed me for months after.

golds is a franchise and they have certain standards they have to live by. having said that I have been to many golds and not all are nice. depends on how much space they have, the owner, cost of living etc. where i live its cheaper then other areas, the golds is a former supermarket, its huge. you come to my gym and you will not want to go anywhere else. best gym i have ever been to. now if i go to the golds 2 hours away its 1/3 the size. has no squat rack... mostly machines.. just a small free weight area. old equipment.. but the area is much more urban and expensive. i'm sure their rent is higher then my golds.

the free gift idea would not appeal to me at all.. cause that is not what I am looking for.. you could just throw in a sample of something with the order. i would much rather have free and fast shipping. i dont want to wait a long time for my order or pay $10 bucks for shipping for a $5 item.

also your dad cannot refer people to your store.. he would be risking his integrity referring people to his sons store and that wont make him look good. your dad is nice for wanting to help you out like that but you shouldn't drag him into it.

your brothers business sounds too good to be true. if his stuff is covered under medicare or regular health insurance he is in great shape.

My brothers business was started 7 years ago. Its not covered under anything because he doesnt make any claims. Hes got a bunch of clientele though and hes doin good. Hes sort of taking me under his wing and really wanting to help me out.

I'd probably rather take that innovative product I invented and let everyone else like orbit, ntbm, nutra, bb.com, etc. sell it for me. Why bust my ass reinventing the wheel? They have all put in long hours and hard work already, I'd just ride their coattails.
 
or just keep it a locally thing,wihtout tryign to go over the internet try to sell to a bunch of young 18-+ kids that wanan get big
 
All I know is if you want to start a supp company, go to Needto and Orbit, they really know how to do things right and effectively.

Get a buisness & Financial consultant. Someone that have knowledge. You cannot do this by your own. I am sure that you're not the only one who thought about it and tried to it. Sometimes will power isnt enough. You need planning, alot of hard work, creativity to be good. You will lose money the first few years and have a plan B.

selling supplements is difficult. and the govt is always trying to categorize supplements as drugs so they can control the industry. McCain wanted to call all supplements drugs--something I found out much later than the elections. Freedom of choice is under attack and although I agree with having a choice on everything, the feds would like nothing more than regulating every single product in the world.
Proteins have to be sold within a fast timeframe because even when sealed in a jar, the contents start to smell funny after a few months.
Supplements can be expensive to put together and there's usually a minimum order requirement. These companies get you by making you buy the complete product from them...meaning no self supplying the bulk powders to cut costs.
If you have an investor, being an instant success doesnt sound important. I'd want to set up next to a gym so you can take advantage of people coming and going.
