If you could only do 1 lift......

If you could only do one lift, what would it be?

If you could only do one lift all your life what would it be? Ie you had to design a routine where you weren't allowed to use more than 1 lift. You could do variations of that lift but it must be essentially the same. So for bench press you could do close grip, regular, machine press, bench press with chains, etc.

For me, it is definitely the deadlift.

I would get an olympic coach to teach me the snatch. It has everything I'd like in it.

Have you ever done 1 hand barbell and db snatches? They are super easy to learn and really fun, besides I finally just barbell 1 hand snatched 95 lbs 2 weeks ago:) They also really work your grip.

Thats a no no given my shoulder history.

However, snatches and C&J's would be SWELL to learn if I had a good oly coach. But...given my current affinity for certain lifts if I had to do these lifts I would've started them when I first began lifting 5 years ago!

hmm either deadlift or snatch, if I could learn the snatch properly. Iv always wanted to be able to do snatches but it would be so hard to teach youself without an coach just trying to copy youtube vids...

If I couldn't do deadlift, it would be clean and jerk. Apparently clean and jerk works every muscle in the body, and it is easier to learn than the snatch. I have been doing some barbell power snatches but they are definitely really hard to learn, 1 handers are really intuitive and natural though, love em:)

yeah olympic lifts are great for explosive power and they are a feat of strength, the only thing I wuold dislike about doing snatches or clean and jerk for my main lift is that olympic lifts kinda suck for building mass when compared to powerlifts or similar things...

every muscle EXCEPT the chest, but has to be the one you do if you could only do one.

Reason why?

It's 3 lifts! Deadlift into dynamic shrug, (drop under) front squat from a dead stop, push press with a rebend of the knees.

If c&j was not up there I'd do the snatch, but thank God we can do as many as we have the energy for!

I'm gonna video my squat 225 rep out, 185 bench, and pullups today so I think I will also video my 1 handed barbell powersnatches:evil: I missed them last week because there were a ton of guys in my gym and I could just imagine the barbell flying out of control and nailing someone in the head......... I'll post it up in my fitness log though.

shibs I see you voted for power cleans: Why power cleans over the olympic clean and jerk? You basically get power clean in but with a fuller squat and you get to have a powerful overhead portion too. Much more full lift.

why no dips?! if I could only do 1 upper body lift it would probably be dips...

still undecided but Im thinking deadlifts...

Squats only get 2 votes?!?!?!?!?!?

Deadlifts are definitely way better.

EM: Why in the hell would you do only dips? IMO that is almost as bad as just doing barbell curls in the squat rack. You'd develop some bad imbalances lol

i meant if it was one upper body exercise, then I would likely choose dips.

Your gonna get an imbalance in whatever you choose for questions like this...

Yeah but with bench, you would get a injury type imbalance, you would probably get some pain too. With deadlifts or olympic clean and jerks you would have much less of an imbalance.

i was on the verge of choosing squats because of one reason: you can do them more often...
i love deadlifting more than any other, but squats are right up there... they definately deserve more than 2 votes...

Yeah for sure they deserve more votes. I imagine if all you did was deadlifted though couldn't you deadlift 2x a week?

yeah C&J would probably give you the least amount of imbalance but dont you think there would be a big differance in your tri strength compared to bi strength? And upper back compared to chest?

Yeah for sure they deserve more votes. I imagine if all you did was deadlifted though couldn't you deadlift 2x a week?

yeah this is what I thought, SouthernLord said squats cause he can do them multiple times a week but if I went to the gym 3x a week and Monday did deficit pulls, then Wwednesday did speed pulls and Friday did romanian deadlift Im pretty sure I could recovery from that if it was all I did and I kept the volume low, and it would also get my copnventional deadlift numbers up.

And if I was starting to get overtrained I would go back to directly working the deadlift and doing speed pulls on Tuesday and then conventional deads on Friday. Although some older guys may only be able to do it once a week or once every 9 days which would suck, I would hate to only lift once every 9 days...

Pullups are by far my favourite exercise. I look forward to doing these the most. Obviously not working the most muscles but nevermind.

Actually I'd say pullups are not a bad choice at all. They are a very natural movement and work your back and arms very well.

Definitely the clean and jerk!

its like voting for half the options on that list all at once!

great exercise.

Oh god it has to be deadlift.

The olympic lifts sure do generate a lot of explosive power though. Too bad one lift can't have everything.

lol barbell curls

Clean and jerk.

I'm with the pull ups, too. Seems like you could work out a lot of muscles in your upper body with a few grip variations, positions, and weights on a pull up bar. And depending how you hold your legs to hold some weights while doing pull ups, you can work out your quads or hamstrings even. Even calves. Yeah, give me a pull up bar, lol. Not to mention, way less likely to cause injury.

This is if I HAD to choose one to try and get the best body with. Now, as far as the workout I look forward to the most, it's the good old flat bench press. Love those days.

Calf raises for sure..... nothing like going into the gym and passing all the puss's that are on the bench and squat rack and going right for the glorious calf machine... Zoning out listening to some death metal and getting to work!!!! hahahaha

I never train calves. I must be a pussy! Lol!

Mine would be Squats as there a well know full body lift.

Clean & jerk is similar and involves the arms as well... Just sayin...

Clean/Jerk/Press into an overhead squat...I think this would just about cover all bases.

Pullups. But clean and jerks are a close second.
Olympic Clean and jerk press= partial squat, dead and press. So you get a little of all for the price of one :)

I wouldn't count body weight exercises as a lift so could still do all those for an actual lift would be a clean and jerk

really the snatch? do you truly feel it builds the body equally in strength and size better than any other lift?...
would you then get more carryover into any functional lift?....
im very interested in your opinion bro...

One lift to prepare me for all life's physical challenges? The snatch is it. Yes, I believe the speed, strength, flexibility, and stability gained from snatches carries over to other lifts.

Deadlift has gotta win, the amount of strength and power and muscle gained from a deadlift definitely seem superior to any of the other lifts, tho I imagine olympic lifts might come close

Voted for Clean and jerk. Although the deadlift is a great exercise and i love it; having the bar over my head is much more glorious than holding it near my balls. I can also front squat while doing the clean which is one of my favourite exercises.

Since all the possible variations of a lift are allowed, clean and jerk has to win.

A variation on the beginning of the clean is a deadlift. Another part of the lift is the front squat. Another would be the military press. Hang cleans, high pulls, shrugs etc could all be part of your routine. No way deadlift would condition you as well as that. Or is that cheating :)

this has changed for me to ; overhead squat

currently my favorite lift
