Ive got the most gnarly neck pain going on for the past 2 days - it's very fucked up. Right now it feels like a 400 lb man is literally standing on the back of my neck. no matter if i try to turn to the left, right, up or down, i have very little range of motion and the pain in excruciating. even getting up from the couch is painful because you have to use your neck muscles to hold our head up (i never realized this until now! fuck it hurts!)

a. what's wrong with my neck?
b. am i dying?
c. will vicodin help this type of pain? (i have a bottle of it it i didnt use after my recent boob surgery)

Hey smurfy,

I have what I call a "finicky neck" and have had the exact pain you are describing many times, usually 2-3 times per year. Its usually because I sleep funny, or do something while working out that "tweaks" it. Its one of the most painful things and totally limits mobility.

**NOTE I AM NOT A DOCTOR**

a) Your neck muscles are likely in a spasm, guarding you from further damage. This causes the pain because the contracted muscles fire the nerves that send pain signals to your brain
b) no
c) a little but but not by much, it won't cause the muscles to stop spasming and it won't restore your full range of motion. If it was me I'd save the Vicodin and try to get ahold of a muscle relaxant like Flexeril.

The really only effective treatment though is the following:
1) Ice then warm in 20 minute intervals
2) NSAIDs (tylenol or advil)
3) various stretches to loosen up the surrounding muscles, I learned this after a few stints through physical therapy for a similar type of pain.

thanks lestat
that is very helpful info
i'll forego the vics - they make me itch anyway which is why i didnt take them after surgery

ok like i just raised my left arm to scratch on top of my head and the right side of my neck totally spasmed in a painful way

this sucks! i cant do anything

pass that shat!

wait wait wait.....put some diarrhea medicine into it...tee hee

It feels like Jnev is on your neck? ;_)

a. I have no idea
b. we're all dying
c. NO

you need to see an osteopath and get that worked on. Do you have any castor oil at home?

i have 500 vic 10 mg pills sitting here i have had them for three months

if the pain doesnt dissipate after a few more days using home remedies like heat, acetaminophen, proper sleeping position - then i'll see about going to an appropriate doctor.

I hate pills could never really take em . My doc keep writing them to me 100 at a time ... Maybe i should sell the fucking things

I've been taking a ton of vicodin for the pain in my neck.

But, The Alcatraz is still here.

The Vicodin will just mask the pain, which can be good some times. But it can also cause you to make it worse. When it stops hurtin you start doing things you should'nt. I use to take it when I would try to go real big on some dirt jumps. When you crashed it did'nt hurt and you could keep doing it all day, But then tomorrow would come and you would relize how dumb you are.. Just stay away from Vicodin.

i tried taking tylenol to get rid of a pain in the ass.....but an hour later my supervisor was still around.

You never answered me, do you have castor oil at home? If not, go buy some, it's cheap. Put it on a warm cloth and place it on your neck.

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!
It's also a good liver detox for all you juicers

Traditional or folk medicines
The use of cold pressed castor oil in folk medicine predates government regulations. Cold pressed castor oil is tasteless and odorless when pure. Uses include skin problems, burns, sunburns, skin disorders, skin cuts, abrasions, etc. castor oil can also be used to draw out styes in the eye by pouring a small amount into the eye and allowing it to circulate around the inside of the eyelid. The oil is also used as a rub or pack for various ailments, including abdominal complaints, headaches, muscle pains, inflammatory conditions, skin eruptions, lesions, and sinusitis. A castor oil pack is made by soaking a piece of flannel in castor oil, then putting it on the area of complaint and placing a heat source, such as a hot water bottle, on top of it. This remedy was often suggested by the American Healing Psychic, Edgar Cayce, given in many healing readings in the early mid-1900s.[32]

Though we mainly know it as one of Edgar Cayce's most famous remedies, castor oil has a long history of traditional medical use dating back to ancient Egypt. Derived from the castor bean, the oil was traditionally used internally as a laxative. However, now it is primarily used externally due to its potential toxicity.

A castor oil pack is placed on the skin to increase circulation and to promote elimination and healing of the tissues and organs underneath the skin. It is used to stimulate the liver, relieve pain, increase lymphatic circulation, reduce inflammation, and improve digestion.

Castor oil packs are a traditional holistic treatment for a range of conditions, such as: cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder), poor eliminations, epilepsy, various liver conditions such as cirrhosis and torpid liver, scleroderma, headaches, appendicitis, arthritis, incoordination between assimilations and eliminations, colitis, intestinal disorders such as stricture and colon impaction, incoordination between nervous systems, neuritis, and toxemia.

Castor oil packs are made by soaking a piece of flannel in castor oil and placing it on the skin. The flannel is covered with a sheet of plastic, and then a hot water bottle is placed over the plastic to heat the pack.

A castor oil pack can be placed on the following body regions:

The right side of the abdomen to stimulate the liver; inflamed and swollen joints, bursitis, and muscle strains; the abdomen to relieve constipation and other digestive disorders; the lower abdomen in cases of menstrual irregularities and uterine and ovarian cysts.

Safety precautions: Castor oil should not be taken internally. It should not be applied to broken skin, or used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or during menstrual flow.

Materials
* Three layers of undyed wool or cotton flannel large enough to cover the affected area
* Castor oil
* Plastic wrap cut 1-2" larger than the flannel (can be cut from a plastic bag)
* Hot water bottle
* Container with lid
* Old clothes and sheets. Castor oil will stain clothing and bedding.

Place the flannel in the container. Soak it in castor oil so that it is saturated, but not dripping. Place the pack over the affected body part. Cover with plastic. Place the hot water bottle over the pack. Leave it on for 45-60 minutes. Rest while the pack is in place. After removing the pack, cleanse the area with a dilute solution of water and baking soda. Store the pack in the covered container in the refrigerator. Each pack may be reused up to 25-30 times.

It is generally recommended that a castor oil pack be used for 3 to 7 days in a week to treat a health condition or for detoxification.

maybe i'll try that. i already use the warm compress and heating pad.
so would i simply soak a cloth in the castor oil and then heat it up somehow? or should the cloth already be warmed up (wet/dry?) and THEN put the castor oil on it?

soak the cloth in the oil, put a pastic bad over it and then a hot water bottle on that.
You can warm up the cloth with hot water then add the oil. Then cover it with the bag and hot water bottle.
Just make sure you have enough oil on the cloth to absorb into your skin

oh i dont have a hot water bottle.
this sounds like a PITA

the other thing i also did last night was electro-stimulation which felt wonderful!

Electro stimulation works for a lot of illness. It puts the vibration of the cells/body back on track.

Putting the packs is a pain, but well worth it. And every home should have a hot water bottle. I think my hot water bottle has cured me of more pain than anything else.

If you try it, let me know

im still in excruciating pain. im about to take some tylenol.
once i sit or lay in a position for any amount of time, its like my neck gets stuck and any attempt to move it whatsoever results in immense pain/muscle spasm

i think tomorrow i call the ortho and make an appt.

this is ridiculous

Hey Smurf,

The worst time I had the pain, which was also the most recent, it was between a 8-10 on the pain scale with certain movements for the first week, then would diminish over the course of 3-4 more weeks with some days being worse than others but overall the pain fading.

I also went to physical therapy for it and they did some massage work, which I don't know if it did anything but it felt good, but most importantly they ran me through a bunch of stretches and weighted exercises to try to get the muscle that was spasm to release.

They explained it as, one muscle is spasmed (clenched up) to protect your spine, but in reality you are not in danger of hurting it (but sleeping wrong on it can send your brain that signal) and by working out the muscles in the area and massaging it will get that muscle to return to its normal state.

Who knows if it worked, I felt like 4-5 weeks of pain was much too long for a non-injury.

yeah this pain sucks, and it seems to just have happened for no reason.

so you went to a Doc who sent you for PT? I am likely going to go that route myself.

The vics will help with the pain enough to allow you to stretch and function. It should start getting better in 2-4 days

methadone
strong pain killer 4X mg vs mg as percs or Vics
slight buzz
no stomach irritation

its been over a week and the pain has not dissipated
Im going to see an ortho doc on 7/1
muscle relaxants dont help
tylenol helps slightly but not really (i get a better range of motion)
its worse when im sitting still or sleeping for any period of time

It does the same thing as a heating pad. It is just moist heat allowing circulation to improve. Nothing is special about castor oil. You could get the same effects with canola oil heating pack.

If the vics make you itch then you have a mild allergic reaction to them. you could take it with 50mg of benadryl to prevent the itching. You may need a muscle relaxer and or a medrol dose pack.

Apply ise to it as well. It will also increase circuation and even give it a numbng effect. Taking the pain away will help the muscle relax a bit allowing the probem to correct itself or heal.

ive already used muscle relaxers (skelaxin) and it didnt help
i will try ice but the heat feels so much better on it
i see the doc on july 1st
i hope he sends me to PT so i can get some deep tissue massage or ART to release that tension in the muscle
(they did this on my lower back last summer and it was tremendous even though it was painful while they were doing it)

um its been over 2 weeks and Im still in excruciating pain. last night was terrible. i actually tried sleeping in the bed rather than the couch - mistake!

cant wait to hear what the doctor has to say about this nonsense.

I know one thing - my wife read where it started labour. She was afraid of going into labour during Bangkok Traffic - rush hours. So one evening about 6 pm - she drank a cup of that stuff - yuk.

5 hours later - we were in the Hospital. Worked as perscribed.

You should just ask lummie to go out for a bit if you want your pain in the neck to go away.

:lmao:

j/k

I would ask the Dr. about Topral + vicodin. I would definiately us whichever makes you feel better Ice or heat. You also may want to try Icy Hot... Atleast until to can get to a Dr.'s office

I've Rx my guys (military) who've suffered with the same symptoms as you in their back and neck topral + vicodin. It worked for them, of course it knocked them on their ass but, it worked.

One word of advice don't mix vicodin w/ tylenol more or less it can strip the hemogloben from your red blood cells and be rough on your liver.

Hope you feel better soon.

OK so I saw my Orthopedic Doc today and he is sending me for PT for 4 weeks. He wrote me a script for Percs and some other anti-inflammatory medicine. My x-ray came out ok - no skeletal issues.
it looks like a nasty muscle spasm - not sure what caused it.

well i took my first percocet an hour ago and i feel fine - not really any different although the neck doesnt hurt nearly as bad as it usually does this time of night.
but i thought the percs would knock me out? or make me feel high. but no.

fuck this itching - although it feels good to scratch it, im starting to get annoyed
and ....Im wide awake
wtf people

ortiz - i dont know...but the bottle says OXYCODONE/APAP 7.5/325 mg

You believe wrong, somewhat.
Oxycontin is time released oxycodone
she's only taking 7.5 mgs of it
that's baby asprin
Oxys start at 20mgs 40mgs and 80mgs

peel coating off wiith thumbnail
put under dollar bill
smash with end of a lighters
fine it up with your health insurance card
cut a straw from your dunkin donuts ice coffe (grab an extra actually)
rail it off the top of the back part of the toilet while you sit facing forward on the seat
that was my way of getting high at work, when I could actually get 80mg pills

Damn you were hardcore!

If you want to manage the pain without narcotics
the real key is keeping up with an every 3-4hr regimine of 400mg of motrin OTC

It takes the edge off, but people forget to keep taking it
good to hear you are feelin better

You are itching because you are having an allergic reaction. Benadryl should help with the itching, ask your Dr. for something non narcotic.
