Cost of living is slightly more than double and housing - maybe 3-4 times more.
In NYC a good equal would be 125k per year - 100k bare minimum.

Also keep in mind little fish big sea - your competition regardless of ability will be high (that goes for anyone).

Oh and one more thing - Uncle Sam is going to take a much larger chunk of your check then you might be used to.

Good Luck!

How do people like firemen/policemen survive in that city? Secretaries, etc?

Thats what I want to know. Of the 10,000,0000 people in the metro area you think many of them make $50k a year or less and yet still manage to stay aliveLOL

The Burbs, rent control appartments (yah they still exist), roomates and the rate of pay is higher in NYC than other places.

A 50k job in NYC is like a 32k job else where.

I live in jersey, suburbs of NY and a fireman here starts at 75k/year. Works for 3 days straight and 4 days off. Somethingg like that. The guy I know does that and works on the side in construction making a ton more. Not bad... and the good part is the pension and benefits he gets.

PLUS, everyone here has both people working in a couple, husband/wife. It's less often only one wage earner doing it all.

"Secretaries"... My firend was an Executive assistant 10 years ago making 50k/year. Who knows what she's making now.

We've talked about the highr RE prices, but that does come with a higher salary too.

The bad thing about living here is if you live close to the city, you BETTER be taking advantage of the city's higher income potential. If you're not, you shouldn't be living here. That's what I tell my wife all the time. We don't "use" the city for our income, so we don't really benefit from it and would actually benefit from moving to a lower priced/income area.

Big difference her is there's so many freaking people around in such a tight area that you could be a scammer, shoddy, crooked contractor and still survive because you won't really see the same customer twice. "Word" doesn't get around like in a small town environment. You could fuck people over and over again and still be in business. Maybe that's what makes people around here "hard" and defensive, "rude" etc... I say "smart". I do give crexdit to people around here. We're a smart bunch. I don't know how to describe it, but it's like things are going in slow motion when I visit other areas of the country. I'm sorry, that's how I see it. Don't hate.

I agree with Velvett about people giving it to you straight up, IF they give it to you at all. IF you get someone to talk to you. lol It has it's good and bad, here.

Having said all that, if you have tos of money, this would be a GREAT place to live because it has EVERYTHING. Come here, get rich and live well. That's what GS did. lol

True and yet people in NYC don't waste anytime blowing sunshine up each others asses like they do in most other places.

I like knowing where I stand when I deal with people and to be honest I hate fake social small talk - you need something from me and I you - blah blah - give take and move on.

Like when you say "Hello, how are you?" - it's a courtesy - no one really wants to know that the seams of your life have come loose so anything other than "Fine, thanks" is not a desired response.

God I really miss the city now.

man that sounds like an ugly way to live
seeing this type of outlook from the outside is not a pretty thing

What sucks is all these Yankees we are getting down here in the south now.

They have worked a large part of their lives in say NYC.
Then they sell their house and buy one down south where land/houses are dirt cheap in comparison.

Stay up north you Yankees! You're ruining the South

LOL I hear that a lot. Whether you mean it or not, I DO hear it. What specifically do we do that is different that you dilike? Serious question. I'd like to know the difference in behavior. Is it the attitude we being? The money? HA! The "we're better than you and putting our kids in private school so they don't grow buck teeth like you" feeling that we give you? Answer!

I really would like to move somewhere a little more laid back and roomier. Like I said, I don't work ijn NYC and don't beneifit from living here, so why should I live here? I'm sick of measuring my property by the inch. I want an acre! lol

and no mortgage. woohoo.

Wait, do you have Chinese massage parlors there?
