you should have bent it into a curly Q and took it up to the counter and said, "here...I think this one is defective" ....

I'd have wanted to film the clerk's face at the counter! Bending anything steel always amazes people (non-lifters). I love it when somebody asks me to try to break a stuck bolt loose, and I bend up the breaker bar like a pretzel .
