I finally went MAC

I so wanna hug you.
Yup, while this is not the act of wisdom that I revere you with,
Yay!

Hahahahhahaha
Another reason U non mac users are... Chumps.

The keyboard alone is such a pleasure.
It just makers more sense to me. I have a lot to catch up on as far as shortcuts and maintenance but the MAC is hella fun to work on.

the make-up place? You wanna look like a whore, like the girls who work there?

I'm about to shoot my HP.

Superqt will be disappointed this thread is not about eye shadow and blush.

My next puter will be a mac too, the iphone made me decide to switch.

I am praying for the day my cpu takes its final shit. I want a Mac so bad. I love my iPhone and every time I am near the apple store I have stop in and play with the iMacs. Maybe I will pour some water on my cpu.

I would never go MAC cause MAC is wack

As an ex-MAC hardcore fan, I see no reason to go back on the dark side. PC seems to do just fine for me.

lol @ justifying paying waaay too much for a computer
I never have any technical issues

If you own a mac do you also have to own a Prius?

Word ! A Prius, eat overpriced bio stuff and live in a 600Sq ft. appartment that costed $400k in Manhattan. I guess it's the "Cool Factor Tax"....

If you only own a PC do you still need other people to fight your own battles?

Seriously though, the MAC, the OS X Leopard and the Time Machine just do things that the PC doesn't and I dig it and because I did I doesn't mean you have to too nor does it mean anyone should be caught breathing in Prius.

It's all good no matter how I see it.

One less MAC user is just more MAC for me.

:garza:

It's funny how many people say they hate PCs and have problems with them. I can't imagine switching to a Mac as they stand right now. PC's are so much more versatile, customizable, far more software apps, user friendly for independent developers due to an open source code environment, easily replaceable (and far less expensive) hardware. Not to mention gaming is king on PC.

Sure there aren't as many virus risks for Mac but look at the user base (around 10% of the market last I checked). PC's are a much bigger target, so go figure.

And the people pissed about Vista should've stuck with XP.

Take care of a PC and it will treat you right. :)

I don't care about the $$$ if I can have a computer that suits my needs which are more creative than your basic PC user and I'm not dissin' on PC I still have 3 of them and use them but right now I prefer the MAC.

There really is no comparison.

If you have highly specific applications (i.e. games or professional software) that runs only on a PC then I could see using one. Otherwise, it would be MAC all the way. They are literally 1/5th the maintenance (or less) than a PC. That translates into a massive productivity improvement.

And this is coming from a hard-core engineer that went through undergrad and grad making fun of PC's.

Props to U Plunk.
Good Stuff.

LOL...
He's a zen buddhist... they don't get down like that.

LOL, see the thing is, everyone reads that.....think's I'm taking a shot at Plunkey for give props to the mac.

Dressing up like Geigh'n to the Oldies would be a step toward str8 for Steve. lolololol Oh, I keed, I keed!

Have fun paying 40% more for everything that has the word 'apple' on it. Including software.

I'm happy with my PC. Once you start looking for opensource stuff, you're happy as hell you got a pc.

That's the way I feel about American coders.

MAC

hahha, sucks for you.

The ex-gf used to be a makeup artist for mac in college.

Ever think there is a reason people are willing to pay 40% more. Maybe the same reason why MACs are taking huge market share away from PCs every quater??

I built a Linux PC then used the money I saved on software to buy a big screen tv. Screw both sides.

Which is great until you want to run some "ported" application.

Oh wait... I just need to recompile my kernel and run the six ancillary shell scripts to configure my system!

make -Kuei -286 -free -release kernel
./reconfig.sh
./update.sh

Oh wait no! It's

make -KUEi -386 -debug -kernel
./reconfig.sh -Vcm
./update.sh -286 /nodebug

Oh wait no! I think there's a "P" in front of the "K" in the makeflags.

Ummm, no. That was for the prior kernel release

Yeah but before that release you could just use -ie86flag

Yeah but that didn't work with the NVIDEA Free86 drivers

No no no... that was just because the USB plug and play drivers were beta. The NVIDEA drivers were fine all along.

Well do something. I just want the damn thing to run.

Ok, I'll post this to a message board and get the flags right.

Let's try this again tomorrow.

Seeing that I only use the computer to surf porn........will a MAC make that big of a difference? Does it have a splash guard option or something?
Now there is a PC vs. MAC commercial actually worth watching.

Actually, I'll just wait 24 hours for someone to create a .deb package that will install with a simple double click.

Yeah, but make sure it's not the multiprocessor version of the kernel. That one requires all the source to be compiled with the -kxbV option or you'll have to download the older version of the tar utility and unpack the executable with the -UVd option. Either that or wait until the new version of the kernel releases. its all on the to-do buglist. Run a quick ps -asef option if you're still unsure about your device drivers and make sure the sysmtmgr daemon is running in the background.

50% because of a good marketing team
50% Mac users are typically the same people who'd never open their computer case, even to clean it. Kinda like the guys who'd never venture under the hood of their own car. With chics it's to be more expected though.

Bottom line is I can count on my fingers the number of times I've had to compile something in the last two years. None of which involved me doing anything other than hitting ENTER and watching das blinken lights scroll by.

Ubuntu != Slackware

Ohhhh! You are using Ubuntu with GNOME. I assumed you were using Fedora with the KDE. I have the /X18 revision of the ASUS motherboard so I can only run releases prior to the 2.6 kernel if I want to use the Ubuntu distribution.

I'll stop now. I have mad respect for Linux but it has always been a pain in the ass to me. I'll probably try it again on an old Alienware PC I have in the garage here in a few months.

same reason people buy clothes with 'labels'. It makes them feel good, think cooler = better.

I know my pc inside and out. i can skull fuck anyone with a mac on virtually any activity you can think of.

And therein lies the problem. You shouldn't have to "know your pc inside and out". That is, unless, your paycheck memo field says: "For knowing your PC inside and out".

Put that boner down you MO!

I'm not geigh. I'm str9.6.

I won't even use an EZ-curl bar in the gym because it isn't straight.

Aw hell... now I gotta go take a shower to make sure teh giegh didn't attack me through the intrawebs.

i cant seem to switch, i bought a macbook because i can use a lot of music programs on mac, but i also got double operating system and on windows 99% of the time, cant think last time i was on mac...

True. If u just want something pretty and look cool and pay for it's cuteness and not have anything to wory rabout - yeah get a mac. Also 99% of mac users i meet, are total computer morons who would run and hide if you dared open up the computer.

Real computer heavyweights go pc. We need that control and power.

... and real real computer heavyweights recognize that Unix and its derivatives offer far more power, stability, security and efficiency than a hacked-together operating system that was never designed to run on serious hardware.

Berkley Unix >>>> Windoze

I'm soooo confused with this MAC/PC thing.

Glad I'm not so fickle when it cums to sexual orientation :)

once again...

soooooooffffffffftttttttttwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeee

There is no Maya, Adobe, ZBrush, Video, Printer Drivers, blah blah shit for all that I use in my work - for Unix. My hacker days are over. I now run a business, but i'm also a master of my computer and need that control when I need it.

Then buy a Mac! You just turn the shit on and it works.

:) :) :)

Mac OS 10.4 = full-blown Berkley Unix. You can point and click to use it in Care Bear mode or you can pull-up a console and play power-user anytime you want. And the best thing is, you can bounce back-and-forth depending on your mood.

No fickleness there. You're teh geigh!

Just say no to MO. Don't they have rehabilitation camps for that now?????

PC is a great MIDDLE of the road solution.

If you want ease of use and still retain power with cheaper cost - there's no question. IN corporate america and in hollywood - whenever something complicated is desired, pc's are used.

You coldn't pay me enough to use that crappy ass mac keyboard! Ugh!

Mac covers the low end to the power desktop. They've got a dual processor 2.8 GHz Xenon Harpertown processor model that looks pretty decent.

And there are tons of third-party mac keyboards out there. Get with the times!

It's hard for an engineer or programmer to experience an Apple moment. It almost has to sneak-up on you.

List me 'reasons' to get a mac besides 'it's designed for idiots'. i can list a 1000 reasons for a pc.

Here are a few reasons other than 'it's designed for idiots':

1) Highly stable, secure operating system. No blue screens of death. No flavor-of-the-month viruses.

2) Tighter hardware integration. Plug-and-play hardware with 99.99% confidence that one component will not interfere with another. This is HUGE for anyone working in hardware and drivers.

3) Tighter application integration. You can take an apple out of the box and produce decent-quality web sites, movies and other forms of online content.

4) All the tweaking and configuration you'd ever want -- it's Unix, remember. Just pull-up a console under Mac OS 10.4, and you'll see every Unix tool and configuration utility you'd expect.

Hmm... reviewing that ps report I see an old Western Digital process and a Kodak Easyshare process that I no longer need, so I took them out of my startup sequence.

Total time elapsed removing them: 8 seconds.

So I guess I should also list 5) Get unneccessary startup shit out of your configuration in seconds.

I just bought a MAC and smashed it due to this thread

next I'm going to my local toyota dealer and buying a prius that when I come to pick up I will then run it over with my truck

youve been to the one at the st johns town center yet? i almost fell out i was like a kid in a candy store.... oh and the itty bitty car they have advertised outside the store is funny as hell. can you imagine my 6'2" 290 lb ass fitting in that thing?

I have a MAC and its the best computer in the world. I have been using MAC's since they came out with the Macintosh Apple II.

It took me 25 minutes today to find the original article that described egg box interations in calcium alginate gels.

Then it took me another 30 minutes to get the printer driver working on my new PC so I could print the article.

I miss my Mac.

Finding it and installing it was trivial. But the HP universal driver can find my downstairs all-in-one printer and my upstairs 4600DN -- then it promptly tells me it can't communicate with them. But if I do the same thing on my Dell M6400 that's 6 feet away, it can find the 4600 but not the AIO. Of course, it can print to the 4600 though, which is a big plus. But every now and then the Dell can see the AIO, but still can't print to it.

I do so love Windows home networks. They have a mind of their own.

You should dump your HP printer! I finally got the balls to dump mine and I bought a Samsung all-in-one lazer and love this thing. I went through 3 HP all in one's and non of them were worth a crap! Now this is the best printer and scanner I have ever used! Plus it has its own wireless adapter built in so its easy to go cordless and put that thing anywhere I want. Wireless can also be standard network or Ad hock.
