How long does "muscle memory" last and what are the theories behind it?

Just interested on some of your experiences with muscle memory after long lay offs and also what is the idea or ideas behind it? After training so light for the last 3 months and missing weeks of chest or back work, my chest has really flattened out and strength seems at less the 50% for the reps. Does muscle memory work different for everyone? Im assuming it does. Im interested in getting my size and strength back, hopefully within the next few weeks or months...and not years. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
 
Muscle memory is an unbelievable force bro. i once quit working out for 4-5months (long story) but I dropped from 190- 145. took me 3 months to gain 45 pds back. and I am not exagerating in the slightest.

Biogeared- Nice!! I have experienced this a few times myself. Once I lost alot of weight from not eating, doing graveshift security. I went from 185-151. I started eating a shitload and it was back in a few months as well. My bodyweight isnt down much at all, its around the same. My chest measurement is just smaller and my strength is really low. It seems Ive gotten weaker mainly due to inactivity, and training too light. Which is a different problem for me. Hopefully itll comeback soon though. ThanX brother!
 
Yeah, it's good to know once you've reached a certain plateau, you can climb back to there more quickly the second or third times around.

We will see how true it holds for me this time around! This time its not really bodyweight I lost, just strength in my chest and chest size. Ill be sure to update everyone as I get back.
