Reservations do not = ghetto, there just happens to be more wealthy tribes than others because not all have the "casino" to draw from. And the majority of tribes have actually been expanding into other long term ventures like utlities plants to communications and manufacturing. Unfortunately the "reservations" typically seen on TV and portrayed in Hollywood, are the dustbowl type with one general store and 16 taverns (these do exist more than they need to but all reservations are not like that.). The alcoholism rate is still seemingly high though, mostly due to the fact that the native population is much less than others, so it "seems" to be running far more rampant than it is. The Native alcoholism rate is actually not really much higher than it is for any other race. Natives just have the very true stigma attached to them from the time alcohol was actually introduced to them.

around mt.pleasent michigan their is a wealthy tribe of casino owners, i believe the ojibwa or ottawa...and once a year all the tribe members get a payday, something attune to 50k...give anyone money w.o having to earn it and of course they blow it on stupid shit like bars and rims. so i don't think casino money = prosperity for all. it just keeps them complacent
and i read somewhere that graduation rates on reservations is around 50%, well below the national average of 80-something%

lots of native americans are disgruntled, but they make up less than 1% of the population, so they don't get much attention. They don't have much of an effect on political races, etc so no one tries to look out for the Native Americans. The culture is disappearing. Not so many people stay on reservations and if you can't trace your family all the way back to the rolls that they took during the trail of tears, the government doesn't even recognize you as being Native American.

Here in Canada, Natives are the ones bitching all the time while you dont hear about black people. Most are alcoholic, on welfare, snif gas, spread aids and commit suicide when they have enough. It's pathetic. The Reservation system should be abolished for their own good and for our pockets.

It all depends on the tribe....for instance I get a "payday", which is acyually called a "per-capita" payment, which is no different than profit sharing...however, I only get $800.00 once a year. Other tribes have bigger per-capitas but 50k is not even in the cards, unless you see a check stub, don't believe it. the highest i know of in that area is like $5,000.00, others had a one lump sum payout which was pretty high, but that was it it....one lump sum, no more. My tribe just started the per-capita payments 7 years ago, because we as a tribe decided not to take the big paydays and reinvest the money into corporate ventures and education. My tribe actually has a very, very high HS graduation rate, and something like 80% of HS grads go on to college and 70% of those obtain degrees, with an unknown % going on to grad school. When talking #'s and stats, you have to remember the "popluation" is much lower so stat %'s will rise and not be accurate to the national average, which is what everyone puts those #'s against.
