How about beer after weight training? In the late 1800's weightlifting gyms were often set up in the back room of saloons. Men would lift weights and drink beer. Fallout from the temperance movement and Prohibition linked beer drinking to sin and unhealthy living. Recent research has found the opposite: moderate alcohol consumption increases longevity and improves cardiovascular health. A study from the University of North Texas led by Jakob Vingren found that alcohol consumption (1.09 grams of grain ethanol per kilogram of bodyweight) following weight training increased free and total testosterone by about 20%. Other studies have found a relationship between elevated testosterone levels and muscle growth. Drinking a couple of beers after a workout might be a good idea.
