Faculty at University of California, San Diego are developing a GPS-enabled cell phone that tells dehydrated migrants where to find water and pipes in poetry from phone speakers, regaling them on their journey....

It's not the libtards that encourage illegal immigration.

People come b/c they know that tens of thousands of American entrepreneurs and hiring managers shit themselves silly hiring them b/c they know they can get labor for half what they can pay citizens. And the American government likes it b/c it makes housing construction (and a lot of other products and services) affordable, which in turn drives prosperity. The Mexican government loves it b/c they don't have to deal with them anymore, and most of them send dollars back there to support family. Now you have dildos like Obama and Company who want to provide benefits to illegals. Are you fucking nuts? We're into China for what? A trillion dollars now and counting?

Fortunately with technologies - more and more cities/states are forcing employers to use E-Verify to verify employees legal right to work.

I agree -- great points.

Importing cheap labor has been a huge driver of illegal immigration and that will remain the case in the service sector.

The silver lining of Obama's declaration of war in US businesses is that manufacturing jobs won't be here for illegals to chase.

I can understand the reasoning of both sides regarding illegal labor.

Everything it seems is made in China, and I'm talking mostly about American manufacturers in this particular rant. Just bought a Schwinn bicycle tire pump a few hours ago at Kmart. Made in China. Business is, understandably, most interested in the bottom line. If it's cheaper to have your product made in China, b/c they pay their laborers shit and provide no bennies, why would you pay an American to do it?
Money > Patriotism.

Illegal labor at least gives Business a domestic alternative. Pay Enrico $7 an hour and now you can now at least compete with the Chinese imports. For his part, Enrico is now most likely making 2x as much as he was in Chihuahua City, so he's happy too.

But then when times get tough, you have 200,000 more people living here who feel, probably justifiably, that they should get WIC, Medicaid for their children, flood the local health departments, etc, etc.

I think anyone that cannot prove at least 3 years of fulltime employment up here should get the boot. They didn't add value to this economy. C'ya.

Beyond that, work out a pro rata system. Yeah you added value, but only 3 years or whatever, and you aren't even a legal alien, so you'll get say 40% of the full WIC benefit. Dont like that? Go back to Panama City and see if you can do better. Here we'll help you with that travel plan.

Costa Rica ironically is so small yet has huge immiigration problems with pepople from Colombia and Nicaragua, I hate it when they take and take and give nothing back to the country.... sme happens in US

Funny, I was reading in the newspaper (San Diego) today many were against illegal immigration. San Diego is typically a more conservative part of California.

It needs to stop, they come here to extract and thats it.

My uncle kept finding dead bodies on his south Texas ranch. People who were trying to cross would get dehydrated and disoriented and stumble onto his land and die horrible deaths. He found a young girl once - probably 15 - and he couldn't take it anymore, so he started leaving out water jugs. Fewer dead bodies, he feels better about life in general. The poetry sounds kind of geigh, but I see nothing wrong with helping dying dehydrated people get some water.

Think of the lives a border fence would save. Even if someone is lenient toward illegal immigration, refusing to build a fence is practically a crime against humanity.

People will try to cross whether or not water is left out. They know the risks. More people survive because water is left out, so yes, more people might get in. But I would hope that no one is so cold that they actually wish death on someone for illegally entering.

Way to wax philosophic. In this context, I don't think that the death of one immigrant would prevent the suffering of numerous others. Immigrants get killed by their coyotes and die of dehydration all the time - they know the risks but they still try to enter. The availability of water jugs doesn't have a substantial impact on the influx of illegal immigrants.

What if a country's refusal to properly fence its borders provides an attractive nuesance that is luring hundreds if not thousands of people to their deaths every year?

It's odd to me that if the a US citizen fails to properly latch the gate around their swimming pool, they'll get sued when someone sneaks-in and drowns.

...Also place border agents there so they can be rounded up and sent back to mexico where they can be SAFE. You can't put out water and at the same time, encourage them to break the law.

some of them smuggle drugs, so you'd also be helping people smuggle drugs into the coutnry.

(and if they don'[t show up cuz of the border patrol - well, then they clearly have picked what's improtant to them. Die rather than risk not getting into us).

The tort doctrine of "attractive nuisance" is only applicable to children, and one of the requirements is that the child wouldn't be able to appreciate the risks. Not the case here, so I'm pretty sure immigrants wont be suing the US government in a tort action (not that they could anyways, due to sovereign immunity).

I don't think the fence would work. Some people walk through 500 miles of desert to get here - I doubt some barbed wire and chain link is really going to do much. The "answer" is probably to enforce existing employment laws. But business owners aren't really a fan of that idea - so we'll probably continue to villainize the immigrants and waste taxpayer money on bad poetry and fences.

I'm sure some of the children involved in the crossing don't appreciate the risks. And I'm not advocating some whimpy chain link and barbed wire -- I'm talking layers of concrete steel and razorwire.

You're a lawyer -- let's make some money! What if we round-up the relatives of people who've lost loved ones during border crossings? Let's claim the US is an attractive nuisance and file a class action lawsuit. We're gonna get paaaaaaaaaaaaaaid.

If it were only as simple as a few illegals sneaking in. It's the aftermath, the crime, the social cost, the foundation & values this country was built on. I'm not opposed to any people willing to assimilate, but I'm tired of being sucked dry. With that being said, I would like to see two walls with land mines planted in between. The furthest south wall clearly marked the dangers in crossing. We can leave them water for their return trek.

Estimated annual costs of illegal aliens vary wildly, from $15B/year to over $300B/year. The most credible report I've read says it costs California alone around $10.5B a year.

$10.5B/year would build and maintain a seriously nice fence.

I think itll actually extend way beyond that. Considering the fact that the population surge of the past few decades is coming to a close (Americans have on average 1.6 children per family, whereas an average of 2.5 is needed to maintain a growing population) combined with the fact that (with extended life spans) the majority of Americans will be older, we will need immigrants to fill the gaps we leave behind...in almost all of the sectors.

An aging population that cashes in their equity and real estate while continuing to consume + how much longer it takes for Americans to enter the work force (an MBA is the new bachelors, etc) = labor shortage. We can either increase productivity or introduce more workers. Also, more new workers = more taxpayers, which is what will be needed to counteract all the old folks cashing in their equity and real estate.

Funny thing is - illegals are now doing tghe jobs that used to be done by blaques for decades. Increasing blaque unemployment and welfare.

It's not the middle and upper class educatd whites who are losing their jobs to illegals. Ask blaques who live in the inner-city what they think of illegals moving in.

That works, but you have to assume at least some of the guest workers will displace American workers -- which I'm fine with.

But what if the displaced American worker is going to fall into a social safety net where they get free healthcare, free food and 50% of their wages through other social programs? For an able-bodied American worker, we need to have time limits on all of our social safety nets (i.e. three years of continuous social benefits and twenty years of lifetime social benefits).

Once those limits are in place, I'd be all for a guest worker program.
