Engagement Rings...

musclemom said:
I've been married twice and never received an engagement ring. My first husband did give me a 1/3 carat diamond solitare for xmas after we'd been married about 10 years, and it was a mistake. It was an inexpensive (around $300) engagement ring ... and don't think the fact that it was worth less than his video game systems exactly warmed me up, either. The man had a home and good credit, he was perfectly capable of financing a classy piece of jewlery for me.
Second go 'round, by now I've realized I'm not really a diamond type of gal, anyway. Our wedding bands are plain titanium (not expensive and virtually indestructible, I liked the symbolism).

All big, clearly expensive rings say to me is you've got money to throw away. You don't measure love in carats. You take any 10 freshly married women, some without rings, some with tiny rings, some with the Hope diamond, and 50% of them will be divorced in a few years, anyway. Diamonds may be forever but marriage is generally a crap shoot (especially for first time out of the box 20 somethings).

this seems to happen more often than a truely good natured ; unselfish man who cant afford a nice ring.

All you guys bitching about our "sense of entitlement" are just too selfish to spend money or time/energy on anything other than yourself.

When you meet the right girl, you wont mind spending the money, nor will she need a huge rock on her finger anyway.

A man will spend money on what he cares about most. When a ring is < plamsa tv ; xbox? Thats not a sign of where is heart is?

highly likely - you may want to touch up on your diaper changing :)

Truth be told... he has already cleaned me, so sure... why not?! :)

Of course, when his time comes for that I am thinking he will want a hot young big-tittied Russian blonde! ... God, he really IS a dirty Old Man!!!

A truly good-natured unselfish man will give HIS LIFE, not bitch about *a ring*.... gives away a hint of some of the guys' character on the thread if they answered any other way. 'Course that might be too harsh a statement. Perhaps these men just haven't met a woman that has blown them away to the point where they would WANT to give their lives for her, let alone a silly ring... and you can't fault them for it then. ....or they are just selfish. Matters not to me as I am already married to an amazing man.

MM and I learned this after our first tragic error in whom we chose to waste our affections on. We didn't do a *repeat* second time around. :qt:

I honestly would be happy with a plain band. I am really frugal and every time i thought of how much i was spent on the ring I would think "this could have been spent on the house" or when something expensive breaks down I'd look at the ring and think "this money could have been spent on this instead" Someone doesn't have to prove how much they love me by going in debt or spending a year's paycheck. If I've been with a guy long enough that i think it's appropriate to get married then he's already done everything right!
