We're shutting down bases at home and creating ones in Iraq... Makes no sense at all if the intent of the base closings in the first place was for fiscal reasons.

Kind of does make sense. Our military is expeditionary in nature, not garrisoned waiting for the big nuke showdown like during the Cold War.

We need fewer bases in the US now, and they serve three basic purposes:

1) Training
2) Administrative/Support
3) Power projection

I think the correct analysis is George Bush stepping over his funding and then yelling at congress for supplementals...

He just needs to be removed entirely

Now the UK is in the mix...

British forces have been sent from Basra to the volatile border with Iran amid warnings from the senior US commander in Iraq that Tehran is fomenting a "proxy war".

In signs of a fast-developing confrontation, the Iranians have threatened military action in response to attacks launched from Iraqi territory while the Pentagon has announced the building of a US base and fortified checkpoints at the frontier.
