This is one of the long-term benefits of the war; permanent mideast presence...

The Iranian president won't like this.

Pentagon planning base near Iraq-Iran border: report
Mon Sep 10, 2007 3:11AM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Pentagon is preparing to build a military base near the Iraq-Iran border to try to curtail the flow of advanced Iranian weaponry to Shiite militants across Iraq

The base will be located about four miles from the Iranian border and will be used for at least two years, according to the report. U.S. officials told the paper it is unclear whether it will be among the small number of facilities that would remain in Iraq after any future large-scale U.S. withdrawal.

Bad news for more US soldiers unlucky enough to be stationed over there. A lot of the times it's impossible to tell friend from foe, some guy by the roadside maybe in desperate need of US help to flush out terrorists, or he just might throw an IED at you.

This conflict was fucked up from the outset, it's impossible to unfuck it now.

Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should be courtmartialled.

Incompetence or treason?

I'm fucking speechless.

Unfortunately I have similar beliefs

There's alot of differing points of view on this. Unfortunately Bush / Cheney have more then shown their incompetency an bull headedness. The General Petreus who's writing the speeches and the real General Petreus just shows the Administrations willingness to put their own spin on this issue

In terms of reality, I agree that terrorist have made Iraq a "university" as it's called in terms of training area for terrorist. I believe We are infact training terrorists at this point. We're not killing them fast enough. Because our involvement may be good now, isnt really a true barometer. When we move out, what happens? I think we need to face the reality that we can't stay there forever. We're shutting down bases at home and creating ones in Iraq... Makes no sense at all if the intent of the base closings in the first place was for fiscal reasons.

I dunno. If the conservatives don't like these outlooks on the war on terror , I wish they just shut up and enlist...

most of its about prestige. once egypt was the muslim super power, then iraq was the nation that stood up to the west. now iran is standing up to take the lead role as #1 .

EVERY leader needs an 'enemy'.

now that saddam is gone, and uneducated iraq's have kicked our asses, and we have no desire to go back there after this war is over - we NEED a new enemy.

new enemy = excite the troops, scare the public, look tough in front of the world, illicit new defense spending, meaning more money for defense companies.

the last part shoudl explain it all.

no american here is in any danger of being killed by an iranian. just liek no american pre-2003 was in danger of being killed by saddam.
