acl surgery

i tried squatting 3 months after mine.....big mistake. I didn't squat again until 9 months post-op....and i started out with box squats. I also had a lot of my meniscus removed though....

you'll be doing leg presses and extensions for a while.

and yes, use knee wraps.

walking better. pt says i can start back on the upper body saturday. that's good news. but i've always been a dead/squat freak. i had very little meniscus removed. pt says i can start light squats at 10 weeks out.

jerkbox, when you tried squatting and messed it up what happened? had you been gradually working up and just went too far?

well, is started out light....went up to a few sets with 135 only

i felt an intense pain in my IT band, and LCL (lateral side of the knee), i guess just because of the general weakened state that my knee was in. PT had me doing one legged squats off the side of a box, and squats with no weight for a while....meanwhile, on leg press,I was pushing plenty of weight.

the worst of the whole experience was the pain after I ran out of meds.....it wasn't tremendous pain, but enough to keep me from getting comfortable at night, and keeping me awake.....i used to make my girlfriend give me foot rubs....but, there was a lot of long nights tossing and turning for me.

I cringe when I hear IT band. I was having some flexability issues and went in for some therapy. They did some IT band stretching. It was HUGELY painful. I just wanted a good stiff shot and my mommy.

thanks for all the positive words. swelling is finally going down, but there's still tons of fluid in my shin and knee. real painful when i first stand up.

my right quad is down to 23.5 inches from 26 pre-op. and wtf? my left is down to 24.5 from 26. why the hell did my other quad shrink so much?

ughh, man....memories.....i used to hate getting up to take a piss......leg felt like it weighed a ton

here goes. I had my acl done 5 years ago in april and have had follow up meniscus surgery. You have two goals right now. 1)Don't push it and 2)stay positive. Measuring your quads every week is not going to keep you in the right frame of mind. ACL surgery in pretty serious stuff for an athlete and more the mindset. Your short term goals will to ride a bike and get your leg around whles attached to the pedal. Also you will have the goal of getting your leg straight so that scar tissue doesn't build up. You have an advantage because you had the machine post surgery.

Ok. Your question... Where will I be when I get back???? You will be starting from ground zero my friend. If you are a big believer in doing leg extensions, get that out of your head, it's horrible for the graft and can stretch it out which means loose knee... CHeck with your DR or pt people about that. You will be a weatherman for the rest of your life because you will get weird feelings in your knee when weather is about to change. If you get the brace ( I had the Don Joy) it will hope, but you can eventually phase it out. I used it for about 1.5 years. The brace is for lateral or side to side activities. Don't be one of those asses at the gym that wears it for running to show off.. It serves no purpose for running in a straight line...

The good news of all this.. If you do don't push it, your knee will make it back pretty close to 100%.. Use pro athletes as indicators, Aaron Boone had the surgery a couple weeks ago and MAY be back for Aug/Sept. That's 6 months. By Christmas time, I bet your squats will be back in the 300 range. You have the rest of your life to train in the gym, use your time wisely right now

One thing to be careful of. IMO don't go looking for that miracle AS to make your knee stronger quicier. There is only one thing worse than having ACL surgery, and that's having it a second time....

Peace out and good luck... email me with any questions, I will be glad to help. [email protected]...
