You think rap had anything to do with the demise of hair metal? Haha.

I just think it's funny that, in essence, what you said is that the people who like rap are the people who are too young to remember a world without rap.

As for the generational thing, rock 'n roll was started by people my parents' age. Rap was started by people my age.

All genres of music have their share of trash. And often the trash is the most popular, and the most quickly forgotten. What you may not realize, since you were a toddler in the '80s, is that at the same time as the crappy hair metal, there were other kinds of rock music going on, good stuff, and it was still commercially acceptable. The "college alternative" scene was thriving.

i tapped into that scene...pixies and dosaur jr come to mind...same with banshees and misfits, all good 80's music...what makes me happier than you is that i dig it all
