The US military is looking into whether an American marine in Falluja shot dead a severely wounded Iraqi insurgent at point-blank range.
Television footage shows US soldiers entering a building as injured prisoners lie on the floor.

The soldier, from the 3rd battalion of the US marines, has been removed from the field and faces possible charges.

US-led forces said they have now gained overall control in Falluja, trapping rebels in the south of the city.

The images of the alleged point-blank shooting of an Iraqi insurgent were taken by an NBC reporter embedded with the US troops in the Sunni city under assault.

The BBC's James Robbins says the incident could prove highly damaging and that the US military will need to answer key questions about whether the rules of engagement were broken during the incident.

It must explain, he says, whether wounded combatants were abandoned, or killed, illegally.

The images show a group of marines, armed with rifles, entering a building near a mosque.

The mosque had been used by insurgents to attack US forces, who had stormed it, killing 10 militants and wounding five.

At least three severely wounded men are seen in a room inside the building - two are slumped against one of the walls, partially covered with a blanket.

The NBC's Kevin Sites says the wounded men had been left in the mosque after marines had fought their way in on Friday and Saturday.

According to Mr Sites, one of the soldiers points his rifle at the head of one of the injured, an old man. The sound of a shot is then heard.

There was no immediate comment from the Pentagon on the report.

There are rules in a war?

i dont think the guys who have seen the footage and are about to jam it in george bushes arse agree with you

neither would the soldier...who we shall now refer to as the "sacrificial lamb"

i guess its the battle field mentality. if youre getting shot day in and day out by insurgents, and you witness the death of ur fellow soldiers at their hands, naturally, theres gonna be some animosity built up towards them. i doubt the soldier in question , prior to joining the military decided hes gonna execute enemies one day, but it just sort of happened due to the turn of events. I am signing up for the army in Janurary and I know that one day, I might have to go to war. I do not condone enemy executions, and I am not looking forward to go to war (if it ever happens). However, if 5 years from now, I'm involved in some Fallujah-esque battle, and I execute a POW due to the strains of battle, frankly, I would not be surprised.

Good luck bro. That's an open minded guy. I was beig sarcastic. Of course I know there are some treats and rules but in the front line the life is 180 degrees different. There's no clean war. You never know until you got there...

man what can you expect from 20 year olds who've gone through all this shit. Everytime something like this happens their leaders should be the ones responsible.

this kind of shenanigans happened by the thousands in WWII
or was it Vietnam?
can I have a Korea?
I think the only wars in which the so-called unarmed weren't shot were in those wars prior to the invention of the arquebus
