Wow that is big! Will you keep him outside or inside? I love dogs but not sure I'll be able to get another one for awhile.

lol doggy face lift right? My coworker's Pug actually had to have an eye lift. We laughed and said her dog had work done.

Well everyone made all the banging in the ass and shitting jokes already so I'll be nice :qt:

Make sure you feed him very well (as in don't fuggin' cheap out on his food!) My sister in law owned one, interesting dog, I've never seen an animal steal food OFF THE TOP OF THE REFRIGERATOR!

Seriously, about the diet thing, because they are so big they literally get "growing pains" don't crate him and a balanced diet goes a long way to building strong bones and joints. They eat a HELLUVA lot, but don't cut corners because of the volume of food required. Actually a raw diet is best for dogs, but it's tough to do.

Oh, and obedience school, seriously. Not optional, really.

I love mastiffs, great dogs.

listen to what you said bro........"they only drool when excited"...........hello?? It's a dog, everytime he see's you he's gonna get excited and send spittle all over the place. Not for me........get a rottie or a dobie.

Ive owned dogs before..never one this big. but i really love this breed. And I will make the sacrifices necessary in order to bring him up happy and very healthy

btw every article ive ever read said crate training is the ONLY way to go??

I was going to get a gigantic crate with a seperater so that i could accomodate the increasing size of the puppy

Bro it is. That what i did . I bought the biggest metal crate i could find it came with a divide in the middle so you could put 2 full size dogs in there. I toke the middle out and my dog has the whole thing . I have a golden retriever and he is huge and its like a mansion for him.. I know your dog is going to be huge or is already but a crate that size should be fine for him

You must spread around karma before giving it to Kano again

I caught the jealous!

The slobber isn't that bad, of course my Weimar treats me as a napkin all of the time so I am used to it.

It is good to see he is raising him on a BARF-type diet. Are you going to do the same?

I knew a woman who owned a lovely Great Dane. She kept the poor thing in the crate a LOT. Perfectly nice dog, good breeding, and because he was crate kept he ended up crippled with fucked up joints.

Big dogs don't need a TON of exercise (unlike some of the smaller breeds) but they do need to be able to move and stretch out, particularly when they are younger.

And a little extra nutrition in terms of calcium or vitamin tablets never hurts, either.

I wish you all the best with your new friend and will really look forward to puppy pictures :qt:

Does crating increase "growing pains" or is there some other reason u recommend not crating big dogs?

I don't think it's good for the giant breeds. I have no scientific evidence but it's been my observation giants who spend a lot of their time crated during puppy months seem to be more prone to odd joint pains or bone disorders, plus most of the giants are very, very people oriented (or at least become intensely attached to their family) and practically act like they'd be lap dogs if they were about 100 lbs. smaller. They're big ass kids who want to be around mommy or daddy nearly constantly.

It stands to reason, though, there are simply NO crates large enough for the giant breeds to completely stretch out and move the way they would if they were enclosed in a room. Giant breeds can put on inches a month, they can't necessarily lie/move the way they would if they were in a less confined space. People move because they become uncomfortable or achy, why would a dog be any different?

def crate it while it is small
bring the crate in your BR at night
let him cry himself to sleep
make sure to take it out FREQUENTLY at first, that'll teach him/her that there is where they do their business

Don't leave the dog home alone by itself alot. Hopefully your job/career allows that bro

Good luck Mastiffs are great dogs
Big phucks though
He'll fit right in with your big Cummings diesel and make up for your small cawk :)
