I couple of times I had closer than desired encounters with the sharks, and yeah....my heartbeat went up a bit.
The first I was going up the anchor line by myself at the end of the dive. I was about 30 feet up and I saw one of the males swim up in my direction, clearly coming to take a closer look. Funny, the big girls stay away, they know you're a diver, they know you aren't food or a threat. The younger fellas are the ones that are like, "What are you??" I was getting ready to blast some bubbles in his face when he got about 5-6 feet away and then turned back down to the wreck.
The second one just about gave me a heart attack. Near the end of my second dive, I felt a little bump on my leg. I assumed it was another diver and turned around to see a big ass shark face. Scared the everliving shit out of me, my eyes must have been bugging out of my head. When I turned and saw him he quickly turned and swam away, but that was it for me...I booked it back to the anchor line and called it a day lol.
I've never heard of a sand tiger biting a diver, ever, and they are my favorite part of any NC dive. I hovered and watched the cleaning station for like ten minutes. But I still have a fairly healthy respect for the fact that it's an apex predator and I'd prefer they mind their own business while I mind mine lol. I try to keep a good 15 feet between me and them and it gets me nervous any time it's less than that.
lol I almost punched one in the face last summer...pure instinct. Reason and logic held me back because I knew it would turn away. That was before I knew the bubble trick. A lion would be much more likely to interact with you than a shark. I've done a couple hundred dives off the coast of NC and I've had sharks directly interact with me maybe six or seven times of that couple hundred, and never in a threatening manner.
