everybody can talk shit about the spotter but i would guarantee NON of us would have been able to do anything either. i've seen it happen in person and there is no way u know it is going to happen nor would u be quick enough even if u did know.

There is nothing a spotter could have done. It happened way too fast. That's why I never keep my thumb on top of the bar up with my fingers. One slip could kill you. It's not going to slip with my thumb around the bar.

its gonna be tough to prove in court. my guess is the Johnson familiy will hit USC with a big time lawsuit. the guy is OUT for the whole season & may never be able to talk again

An "active" spot where the spotters hands stay on the bar throughout the ROM could have at least ameliorated the damage.

Anyway, thumbless grips are so damn dangerous. Sometimes they do feel more natural, but the consequences of loosing it can be extreme.

Even with thumbs wrapped grip Iv nearly dropped it, the bar slid forward and my hands where in like the bottom position of a wrist curl, someone who didnt do much wrist/forearm work would probably have dropped it if it happened to them. But yes it is much better than thumbless. theres a vid of a guy benching 570 w/ thumbless on youtube
