When planning your vacations

Do you try and stay in the nicest place possible or do you just stay wherever is the cheapest? I like to either rent houses or stay places equal to or better than my house...and my husband would be okay with a crappy hotel. His justification is that we wont spend any time there anyway. What do you think? I find it hard to enjoy a vacation if Im staying in some dump.

I like nice hotels. If I cant/dont want to pay for something nice then I dont see the point of going.

somewhere in between. if your not going to spend every second there, its hard to justify something thats crazy nice/expensive, but at the same time, bedbugs, roaches, and rats make it really hard to sleep at night.

go middle ground.

where ya headed?

I have no idea yet really! Im just starting to figure it all out I guess. I just dont know if I should fight for better lodging or just let it go.

South of the border to east of the Atlantic?

Maybe and probably south of the border or even the east coast but not east of the Atlantic because I dont like to fly and I know I cant get away from the baby long enough to justify that anyway. The baby is not coming lol. I wont put an infant on a plane unless I HAVE to.

Also, I'd like to add that we didnt go anywhere last year beacause I was pregnant. So I should choose I think :D

Where are you located?

We just went to Cancun last month. You can get a 4 star all inclusive trip through a site like cheapcarribean.com for maybe $1,500 including airfare, hotel, meals, drinks, etc.

Flight from Chicago was only 4 hours, so it shouldnt be that bad where youre at.

I don't mind cheapos, i'm not going to spend much time in the room anyway...
my dream vacay is a super long road trip all over america, definitely eastern seaboard down to route 66 and westward. just because.

I don't stay anywhere under four stars; I'm a grown-ass man, not some teenager trying to scrape together enough loose change for a road trip.

Go where you like and spend what you want to spend. :) Why be cheap? How many vacations are you going to take?

look into vacation rentals by owner/ vrbo.com

we got a really nice two bdrm house with house tub/lanai/ fully equipped kitched in kauai during the end of high season for under a grand a week

house was very nicely decorated and landscaped too :) and also had surf boards, snorkel gear, bikes and tons of weird things like shampoo bottle samples and stuff that previous guests had left
we cooked on the grill a lot of nights...made our own food and had full sattelite/long distance phone/ cable internet

it was a good deal....lot of great memories there and if I had brought the kids it wouldve been great for them too

Renting an apartment or a house is the best way to go because you can get good deals and plus you can cook really good meals because of the cooking supplies tha tare usually there.

The missus & me always look for a 4 star plus hotel when booking a holiday. Obviously you don't want to spend the whole of your holiday inside the complex (unless it's one of those resorts / countries where you have no choice like Egypt, Morocco or Tunisia) but you can't beat having home comforts (fridge & kettle in room, air con, towels / bedding changed daily etc) & the Euro is now so expensive people book all-inclusive so the food / drink quality has to be good.

I agree...go all out while on vacation. However, keep in mind that it's not necessary whatsoever. My husband and I went on vacation to a remote island off of the coast of Belize. We stayed in tents...the accommodations were by no means luxurious, but it was an adventure vacation. We had a great time.

I would like to go to maldives...my friend was there twice and each time he was under the impression. Now i'm planning such trip.

5 star or stay home.....if its not better than ur home....is it really a vacation?

Crappy hotels have crappy beds, dirty linens and cheap towels. Except in the case of extreme emergency (i.e., driving all night and have started to hallucinate) never stay in any room where you sit on the bed and feel like you need to take a shower or where you open the bureau drawer and startle a cockroach.

Listen to Shirlene, rent a house. If you can't afford it or want to save a buck, find a friend and go together.

Most of the cost of a vacation is the meals and booze, if you think about it. Better to save up and just go to a few NICE places for a meal and enjoy your own cooking.

And ANYBODY who pays $6 for a shot of Patron when you can buy a whole bottle for $21 is crazy.

And for the record, the reason why I have a trailer is because I like my comforts. I like my own cooking, my own booze and my Tempurpedic bed that I can tow anywhere on the continent.

Okay, yes, it's the size of a coffin and you need to get out to change your mind, nothing's perfect :lmao:

I agree MM...I like to stay somewhere that has a kitchen and a fridge so I don't have to eat out each evening. If I have to eat out each evening I'd better bring some diuretics and plan on coming back feeling MISERABLE. Two bathrooms is a plus..but I can deal with one..but...I need SPACE :D most importantly. It's hard to enjoy myself knowing I could be more comfortable at home. I like to pick the best I can afford. :D

I think i feel easy life at home.Hotels are helpful when you are a traveler and you have not any place to settle. Then hotels are best one.But i have not enough money to visit some hotel.
