When do you stop buying gas?

Once it gets to $8.00 a gallon is when I think we are going to see total chaos. Most likely people will still be trying to survive and paying $6.00 or so a gallon. This will last for a season and when the price hits $8.00 a gallon people wont be able to afford to drive to work, people will be sleeping in cars in work parking lots etc. losing jobs, businesses crashing etc. thoughts? Or does no one here think gas prices will get that high for some strange reason? (Willing to make bets through paypal for any takers)

At that point I would be turning my Honda Odyssey, which our whole family loves. I have two kids and a husband with another paid off Honda. DH would keep his car.

The kids and I would start walking everywhere, quit the gym, use free weights at home instead, ect. Just doing all of the things I just mentioned would save us $500 a month.

If we wanted a "day out" we would take the rail to Seattle. If we needed to go to the Dr's there is one very close to the house, Shopping is a mile away. We'd be hoofing it like the rest of the world. In all actuality, the environment, our health, ect would be better. At this point it's just a luxury to even have two cars since everything's so close.

Are you in Eastern WA or Western if you don't mind me asking?

gas is seriously no fucking joke as it is; once my finger gets better i am learning how to longboard because bikes are gay and i can't afford to drive around everywhere anymore

Longboard?

Ok, once I say this I'm gonna shaddup, most likely.

I know some of you know I'm famous in my circles for "reinventing" the home birthday party, simplifying life, killing our TV and cable, ect. It's not usually about saving $. But more often about issues of the heart and soul of my family. QUALITY of life!

Well...to be honest, gas is more about $ and if it keeps on the current upward trend I WILL GET RID OF MY VEHICLE and I can guarantee my soccer mom friends will feel it's a free pass and that it will become the "cool" thing to do!

im going to buy an old vw van, put some big ass rims on it, and convert it to bio fuel.

Oh. so, just like a long skateboard.

Isn't skateboarding somewhere slower and much more work than using a bicycle? I've never skated, but it looks like a rather inefficient means of transportation.

:cow:

it's pretty fast and not that much work. friction isn't nearly as bad as you would think; the wheels and bearings are legit and you will move surprisingly quick.

People will change their ways.

Doesn't anyone remember the odd even days of the 70's?

Exactly.

It will be painful in the short term but over time things will improve.

Nissan just announced it is investing close to 200 mil in alt energy vehicles. It is just a matter of time before the stuff is mainstream.

People will change their ways just like the 70's did. However I don't think the babyboomer generation will change. They like comfort and big ass power in their cars/trucks. Feel the most that will happen is they will add a second car/truck the produces good mileage. The x and y generation will probably be the main people to change their ways.

Were up to $5.90 a gallon up here now and I have no interest in changing my car or truck.

won't happen.

demand falls down. prices fall.

economics 101.

prices are rising, because people bitch - but still keep on buying. Oil traders know this.

government ration will take place before that happens.. the economy will continue no matter what.

When the gov comes for your guns and say you don't have a right to them..

that's when you will see chaos..

thats when china will strike..

Fuck it I got money now. If I was poor like I was a few years ago I would be bitching, but things have worked out for me so fuck it.

Gas jumped like .15 cents this week... I filled up tonight and paid 4.31 a gallon for super. I didn't give a shit at 3 bux, but almost 4.50, that is insane.

It's not only the price of gas. Increased gas $ = increased prices for food/etc. Wages are not keeping pace.

I will probably continue on buying gas forever. I will just limit my trips and try to do all my errands and crap in only 1 day instead of 7 days a week.
See I was thinking we will all eventually end up like europeans and take public transpo or bikes. However the thought of sitting on a stinky bus next to dirty people scares the shit out of me, therefore I probably wont end up ever doing it.

It'll be interesting to see how high the demand really goes before people decide not to take the raping anymore.

The day my work moves to a building within walking distance of my house. Until then I can only demand larger increases every year...

i'm doing some work for an austrian company that is buying a manufacturing business in my area. . .i met with a couple of their due diligence people a couple of weeks ago. . .there were several of us in the room and the subject of gas prices came up. . .there were a number of people whining and the austrians just kind of chuckled and said that with the dollar to euro, litre to gallon conversion, they were currently paying over $9 per gallon in austria. . .and they're still in business. . .

i have static ip addresses on the servers in my offices. . .i can get on from anywhere and do work. . .i'll definitely be doing more electronic commuting. . .

People haven't even stopped buying fiull sized trucks and SUV's yet. Americans arent even close to their limit.

Actually the buying of large SUV's have slowed way down. People are trading these things in all over the country for smaller more economical honda's and subarus.

True, slowed down, but still selling. Also, remember sales of those same vehicles slowed before when prices first popped up to $2 per gallon, then again when they popped up to $3, but each time when consumers apparently acclamate to the prices, those sales pick up again.

Gas is hurting us but luckily husband has a company vehicle. If they take that away, (which I don't foresee them doing), we'll have a problem. Motorcycles are a non option since you still have to come up with sometimes from the second half of November to beginning of April and where he works public transportation is a fucking joke, it takes about two hours one way to get to what takes 45 minutes or less to drive to, so we'd have to try to find a used cheap 4-banger.

Winter heating is an issue.

We've got to get the fuck out of this state.

I heard within the next year or so GM will be moving everything over to china, and those big ships coming into our ports wont be for exporting vehicles, they will be importing vehicles

This isn't the first time I've heard that, but Europe was essentially "designed" with an eye to high gas prices. There are traveling markets. More importantly, they have safe, clean and efficient public transportation infrastructures. They're used to having tiny cars, they don't have these fucking monster double trailer 18-wheelers, they rely on rail. They are set up way better than we are. It seems USA was designed to make not having or driving a car fucking inconvenient as hell (speaking as a person who doesn't have a driver's license, believe me on this point). There are literally countless places were there simply IS no public transportation, and just getting to the nearest grocery store is a 20 or more hilly miles, not to mention winters severe enough that you can't use something like an electric heat pump.

Europe is a heck of a lot smaller though, MM. Remember Europe isn't really even a continent, but rather the product of European cartographers' ethnocentrism. It's just the Western bit of Asia. A nationwide commuter rail system in the continental US would be awesome, but holy cow it'd have to be vast.

True, but we had a lot more rails once upon a time, too. We tore up a LOT of heavy and light rails, and that was damned stupid. My stepdaughter has got some beautiful bike trails all around her, ain't got public transportation for shit. The bike trails are what the light rails were turned into due to lack of use. There was a time you could have gotten on a trolley and that would have carried you to a major transportation hub that can take you virtually anywhere on the east coast. Now you need a car or taxi for the first 15+ miles.

There are vast tracts of residential areas that just sprawl for miles with NO way to get from point A to point B without a car. How many people live in the suburbs or rural/suburbs and literally cannot get a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread without getting in the car?

I once saw a television show on PBS and they point out that urban developers specifically designed neighborhoods this way, no Main Street USA, because part of the American dream had also become owning a car, and part of that meant we were financing the dreams of auto manufacturers and petroleum producers and Wall Street speculators and all those board members.

The lifestyle of America was built on the short sightedness of our ancestors and our children will pay the price for this.

I drive a Toyota that is good on gas...but these prices are even getting to me!

Wages in my area have NOT kept up with the cost of gas and food, as well as stuff like health insurance. There are quite a few SUV's parked on the side of the road, for sale, right now. None seem to have sold.

I've visited Europe and the infrastructure is definitely more friendly toward people without cars. The trains and subways are clean.

One thing I'm surprised no one brought up is that, because the people aren't in the bubble of a car but are walking on streets with other people and on buses with other people....they're really image-and fashion-conscious. I noticed that the people were mostly a proper weight and some spent way more on stuff like clothes than a lot of Americans do.

I think the "justification" i.e. excuses for avoiding spending on public transportation will start going away as these gas prices eat into people's budgets.

I'm kinda surprised no one here bike-commutes, at least part of the time. Riding the bike is great for the quads!

Right now, I live too far away from work (along a dangerous road) to bike-commute, but I'm thinking about moving.

I'm not going to read this thread..

seriously though..

WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT SUPPLY AND DEMAND AND SIMPLE ECONOMICS!!!!

the only reason the prices are so high is because everyone is still buying shitloads of gas, if gas got to a point where it was priced so high that no one was buying it, they would obviously lower prices to sell gas again.

I mean shit, oil companies could sell gas to us right now for like EASILY 70 cents a litre.. but instead they enjoy making 100 billion dollars a year profit.. fucking dicks.. like really.. it's not like the oil companies are scraping by.

Gas won't go to 8$ a gallon here. Not soon, anyway.

We are using less gas now. People have slowed down buying it and it reflected swith some selling of oil last week. Blip on the screen, who knows...

My local utility has just announced they want to raise our natural gas fees 20%. ouch. Electricity has already gone up 12%. Oh well. I'll take it as long as everyone else gets the increase. I don't usually yell the loudest. It's all good. Be happy for what you have.

While they (Europe) have a nice public transportation system most have a car but here's the catch: they're diesel friendly, we aren't. Diesel is cheaper there than gas, clean and every gas station was built around that. Oh and I forgot, you dont see some typical soccer mom driving a Tahoe. A VW Golf is considered a family wagon over there, here it's barely a compact car.... lol

I now bike to work. I try to do this anyway, just for the envirement. We are also thinking about buying a house close to my work and just walking all the time. My wife would still need to drive though.

interesting observation. I've noticed that in Ukraine.

Places where gas is $8 or whatever, are not just paying for the cost of gas. These places have a higher tax imposed on them, making the gas seem expensive. I'm sure these taxes do something to benefit the area in which they are.

So if someone laughs at us and say "Hey, we pay $8/gallon, stop whining" Well, they probably have free healthcare or some kind of benefit to go along with that price.

its about 6 bucks a gallon where i live at the moment. people arent slowing down their gas consumption at all.

me, im a massive scab. i bought a new car (98 corolla) so as to save fuel, cos i figure, the $50 a week difference pays for me to chase 8.43 extra girls per quarter

You know it is not just the public transport infrastructure that is the big difference but the Mega stores that make it tough to go without transport in the USA.

In Thailand, where the majority of the people do not own a car, you can find a 7-11 on every block!! Go try and walk to a convenience store in your neighborhood. We are too spread out. Higher prices are going to force us to grow our cities up instead of out and that is what we need.

Invest in 7-11's also. Light rail systems in every major city as well.

Funny story - you know they tore up rail tracks in Houston to expand a freeway. WTF - how stupid can we possibly be??

Yeah it varies here any where from 3.94 to about 4.04 a gallon. Cheaper gas stations and convenience store gas is 3.94 where as good places are like 3.99 and above.
