What is the stupidest gym advice you have ever heard?

My vote goes to the complete Cybergenics fad.

Or either, HMB is just like deca.

I was doing incline curls and this guy comes up to me and tells me to strengthen the seat.

Doing high reps will get you ripped.

Working out on your forearms will help you shoot better in basketball, and proceeded to tell him to do 30-60reps of wrist curls. One old guy was telling it to another old guy.

Don't do deadlifts, it's bad for your back.

You'll crack your back with good mornings.

Those are just a few off the top of my head ...

-sk

Reverse curls will work your triceps.

(The idea being that since a standard curl works the FRONT of your arm, a reverse curl would work the BACK. I knew a guy in high school who did that for months before giving up.)

I was told by a Guy that That he takes Ala for his Liver...

Because Testosterone-synsis takes place in your liver !!!!

I asked him where he herd this........He told me the Guy form GNC told Him.

:FRlol: :FRlol: :FRlol: :FRlol: :FRlol:

The same guy told me his chocolate protein powder tasted like shit.........I asked him what he was mixing it with ???

He told me he read the directions and it said to "mix with your favorite beverage" so he mixed it with orange Juice !!

Well a little more about this Kid.......He is a high school kid
Line man for the local foot ball team.

But I do got to give him some credit....He at the Gyn Working Hard !!

I guess we can have a flamefest on those who are morons and are not on the boards right!!!theranger

The stupidest would have to be from the needle that told me to get massive one must do one rep maxes every workout.

Some putz standing next to me as I am doing Hammer Curls " Your doing your bicep curls all wrong, you should do them like this".

Apparently he had never heard nor seen Hammer curls before. I then saw him a few days later blasting out hammer curls.....I wonder where he got that idea from.

Bro, you need to hang with us on the training board. This is correct.

Yeah...low reps build mass, but, not without doing a couple of warm up sets first and maintaining perfect form. I know I wasted countless hours in the gym lifting super heavy and doing only 4-6 reps per set. Sorry...all that does is give you one of those " weird" looking gym bodies that every other guy has..no symmetry, no cuts ,no veins. So just " lifting heavy" leads to nothing but blocky, undefined mass and increases the risk of injuries...there, now let the flames begin.

If this is the worst advice you guys have gotten, you must not have been to many gyms. Either that or everyone there is a genius. Or, everyone at the gyms I've been to are idiots (except me of course). :jamesbond:

You get cut with diet and cardio.... not dependant on rep range.

Okay, how about this one which I got back in the early 80's.

"If you really want to grow put a few drops of orchic under your tongue"..Damn stuff was liquid BULL BALLS, i found myself charging onto fields and raping cows as they grazed...Didnt gain any weight though.

Check out needsize's 5x5 routine on the training board.

The Janitor once told me

Don't ever smell the crotch of womans underwear, leotard, or bicycle pants. especially when you see an unattended Gymbag in the womens locker room :mix:

Dude, sorry to say, but that's totally wrong. Doing more reps will not get you cut or give you bigger veins.

Also, going heavy does not increase the risk of injuries if you're practacing proper form and have a spotter.

lol@ cross cables are for "cuts". I F*CKING hate it when I see these FUCKS in the gym talking about "Upper chest" and "working the inner thigh".

Or "to get the tear drop, you have to do XYZ..." lol

probably the stupidest thing ive been told in the gym is by this dipshit who dosn't know anything about gear and was trying to sell me some eq. He told me eq would just make me big hard and ripped without holding water, i could take it up to the day of the show. I told him i wanted to take winny cause it dosn't hold water and makes you hard and he said "bullshit who did you hear that from, ive got a book that says blahblahblah, ect, ect. You get the point. And then to top it of he says he got the eq for $400 and would sell it to me for $200. This was 1 vial of 10ml 100mg/ml, i mean come on get real.-Josh

I'm glad to see the tradition of Socrates living on.

"It is unhealty to use heavy weights for training. That is why our whole gym only has 2 plates of 15 kilo and not more. Free squats are bad for your knees, so we don't have a squat rack."

I was told this by some broad working for a gym when I was looking for a new gym in my area.

-----Leg Presses are more effective than Squats because you can lift more weight----

I told him.... "hmm... I never do leg presses and I have much better legs than you, maybe you should give squats a chance?" he tells me they are bad for your back and cause arthritis.

This coming from a guy who just watched me squat 405 for a set of 15 rock bottom, while he had 22 plates on the leg press doing something similar to a knee spasm where the knees barely unlock and then return to the locked postion. What a fucking asshole.

Oh... here is another one.... Some guy told me that Winstrol was awesome for joint problems and will fix them right up. I said... "you mean Deca right." He said "No way, Deca is bad for your joints, Winstrol works wonders."

One instructor at my gym tried in several ways to explain that clen would "oxygen" my blood, when I asked him to explain he came up with some shit like "no no no the pill actually takes oxygen to your muscles"
LOL then I asked if they were used to reduce BF and he said "that's just bull and hype"
:p

Another one, aminoacids and protein are two different things :p
and my favorite:
to gain mass and definition at the same time start with low weight and high reps, then go for low reps and lots of weight, because body fat has litlle effect on definition....:p
oh and eating protein before you workout will give you more energy, carbos will only make you fat...
WTF???:D

worst advice...

What I can't figure out to this day...are these personal trainers you see moping around the gyms acting like they know everything about everything about bb'ing weighing no more than 150lbs on the norm.... and that is a gererous figure! I have 2 memberships at two different gyms in my area. I go to a Gold's Gym once in a while over here for change of scenery. I have to say...people are just damn lazy. Why would you pay for instrution from some scrawny, grossly out-of-shape, guy acting like a personal trainer to show you how to exercise? Practice what you preach? Right?! It obviously ain't working for these guys.... People are so gullible. I always thought you are better off hanging around the gym getting advise from the vets you see there every day. How I learned. If you must have a personal trainer, go for the guy who actually "looks like he lifts some weight and has some decent size or shape to him." GEEEZZZEEE!!!! Most of these personal trainers I see nowadays look like they never touched a weight in their lives, let alone train someone to. Now that is scary! Can somebody say injury? (lol)

my 2 cents....

I'd have to say when 150 lb teenagers try to give you advice.
Also when fat, slobby personal trainers try to give people advice on how to look better when they don't even look the part themselves.

There's always this either skinny or chubby instructor correcting You and explaining to other people why your routine sucks, then You ask them about theirs or their training backround and they would come with stories like:
(chubby) I used to train really hard, and was even bigger than you, but I used juice and it's all gone; what you gain, you don't keep :FRlol:
(Skinny) I used to train very hard and was gettin huge, but then I had a car accident, weeks after I broke my leg playing soccer, then I got married....:smash:
Then you see their 150@5'2'' and wonder ........ They are not even fit to spot for you on the bench press :spin:

It's not the first time I'm saying this but Stanozolol does not destroy your joints, it rather leads to a better collagen synthesis in cartillage and tendons, thus giving less risks of injuries. Its activity in the joints can be painful yet useful.

You are correct in the fact that collagen syntesis with Winstrol is better, but the quality of the synthesis is inferior to that of Deca, Primobolan or EQ.

Winstrol is known to produce more collage with less cross striations, thus making bigger weaker tendons.

I live by experience rather than heresay and I can attest that I have never had more tendon problems than when I used Winstrol on a rgular basis.

I am still amazed that so many people are stuiped enough to think this. My legs are twice as big as any of the other regulars at my school's weightroom and yet these dumb assholes still argue with me when i say that ATF squats are far better than their 90 degree bullshit.

Oh my god, i love the leg press guys. 5 plates on each side, slight leg bend and back up. Even though squat can hurt your back, good form will prevent it, and i havent used a machine yet that replicates it perfectly.

Some big muscle head came up to me when I was using the thigh master and told me that I would have to start lifting weights to build muscle!

He then gave me some stupid movie "Pumping Iron" or something like that!

What a bone head!

LOL you had me going there bro nice one

Not a piece of advice but the most annoying thing is when people say "I'd be like that if i took steroids" absolute ignorance.

Oh, and the 180lbs fat fucks that come in my gym and tell me that they're going on holiday in 3 weeks and want to look good, followed by "i just want to lose the fat, gain some muscle" then pointing at the picture of shawn ray "I dont want to look like that though", Yeah like youll ever look like that. Idiots.
Bro

i remember this one from one i started:
"when you bench, bounce the weight up off your chest, you can bench a lot that way. that's why i'm so strong"

this kid always had a bruise along his chest. and he thought the pain was from getting bigger.

There was a guy in my gym with gifted genetics, you know that type that claim to know everything about workouts, diet and chemisty. They eat what they want, do not diet to get lean or bulk and they know the best workouts, ...etc. This guy told me that if you stop eating sugar, you would not feel the burn during lifting. He said the burn you feel was due to sugar. I asked if he knew what latic acid was, the by-product of muscle activity. He said bullshit, it was sugar in your muscles and if you stop eating sugar it goes away.

LOL wow what a retard!

It gets better, he lifted M-W-F worked every body part but with one set of 10-12 reps. His claim that was all you needed to maintain or grow. He also claimed women should not push themselves to hard with weights, in would cause problems with their periods. He further went on with supplements were worthless, the worst of which were Whey protien and Creatine. Women should never do these at all. He was one of a kind!!!!!

Take 150 mgs of Clomid a day to save your gains and restore HPTA.

Oh, wait a minute...that was here.

"I hate to tell ya, but if you got to do it(bench press) more than twice a week"
now i only do it once a week. He is still about 140lbs.

"always keep your feet straight when squatting"

"going deep is bad for you"

"Don't use you back when you deadlift, you can hurt it"

doing straight leg DL " youre going to hurt your back doing that"

all i can remember right now...

imuplse: 13 posts and already you think you know it all. You'll fit in well here.

stupidiest advice :

- A dude in my old gyn said : Russians have better calves cause they have a special food program for growing calves . (!!!!)

-to get ripped abs do 100 reps of situps a day.

I haven't read this whole thread so maybe someone has posted this, but the worst I've heard recently is that "you should do everyt set of every exercise to failure".

Well, I started working out at a health club about a year ago. I was pretty overweight when I first started. I asked the personal trainer what would be good for putting on muscle. The skinny personal trainer told me that I would need to do just cardio and go very light on the weights. He told me that if I did heavy weights it would put too much on me. Well, the other day he comes up to me and tells me that I should have listened to him. I guess he was right. Now instead of looking tone and thin I've been suffereing with a side effect from heavy weights that causes me to look bigger and muscular. I can't stand to look in the mirror anymore. My arms and chest have grown so much that it is very hard to be around people without them staring at me in shame. Dammit, why did the weights do this to me? If I would have just listened to the 135 pounder now I look horrible!

Do deca and fina. They are the 2 safest compounds you can use and have no side effects.

Just remembered this one. This old guy "teaches" this kid how to do flat dumbbell presses. So he goes on and on, and then is like at the end of the movement you have to throw your body forward to put the dumbbells down. He keeps going on and on how important it is to throw your body forward.

WHAT THE FUCK???

-sk

Just because Nelson writes books doesnt mean he knows anything (No offence). Why assume just because someont posts only 13 times he knows nothing? Thats ignorance.
Bro

the post wasnt about knowledge but accomplishments, nelson worte a book, i dont see that other guy writing a book???

not so much bad advice, things that annoy me down the gym....

fat bastards doing just sit ups thinking they are gonna get ripped.

people leaving the gym and lighting up a ciggy (whats up with that?!!)

people curling weights they clearly cant handle, stumbling all over the place and swinging back and forth. - fuckers.

THAT guy who hovers around the bench waiting for you to finish - only when he gets on it he does fuck all and lifts hardly anything.

people staring at you while you are working hard - maybe if they spent less time staring and more time working out they might look a bit more like you!

anyone trying to strike up a conversation WHILE you are midway through a set (gym instructors love doing this)

and the winner "..yeah, i used to be as big as you but i lost it cos i had an accident/ i stopped working out/ my girlfriend didnt like me being that big/ im a big fat liar. "

Hmmm... here are a few
"You're going to hurt yourself lifting that heavy all the time"... this was said just after doing a warm up set.

"You can tell which guys in here use steroids... they all have tiny legs... I can tell you are natual because your legs are big too."

"You can curl alot more weight if you kinda swing your body with the bar and lean back at the top"

"If I do my dumbell kickbacks like this, it saves time on my workouts, because I can work both my triceps and my biceps on each rep."

"Boucing the bar off your chest makes you alot stronger on the bench."

"If I do all of my laterals with cables, it really ripps up my shoulders... I mean looks at the cuts!"

"No, you have to do all your reps as fast as you can to get big" as I watch in amazment as he did alternating dumbell curls with horible form at a speed of around 3 reps per second with 5 ibs dumbells.

And my favorite:

"Man I get the best burn in my biceps when I do my curls on the leg curl machine!"

Forgot one, this seems to be a common misconception where I live. All these 150 ibs kids love winny.
"Yeah, winstrol is the best steroid you take, because it is the only one that can make you massive and ripped at the same time..."

man, and all this time i was just dropping those bad boys to the side .................:)

shows what you know...

a lot of times i drop 'em right when that guy who is hovering around waiting for the bench is close..........damn!!! missed again!!!! :)

Funniest is this 16 year old girl (I'm guessing) who PRETENDS to work out while looking at guys. When she picks out her "mark" she walks over to him and asks him "how do you use the chest machine". Funny thing is, in the space of 1 hour she asked 4 different guys how to use the chest machine. Funny how difficult the chest machine is to use.

"If I do my dumbell kickbacks like this, it saves time on my workouts, because I can work both my triceps and my biceps on each rep."

[/QUOTE]

LOl :p

bicepts, yeah the guy would do a kickback, then kind of curl the weight up to his shoulder for about a 4th of a rep instead of just stopping when his forarm was perpendicular to the ground. Funny as hell.

"lift heavy....low reps build mass dude......"

wtf? i think you should take that advice bud.

i just love when im pressing 405 on the bench and these pissy little fucks walk up after watching my whole set and saying your butt kinda came up at the end there. im like ok go bench 135 fag boy

This overwieght out of shape indian man at my gym this past week was giving advice to a few disciples in the gym. I kept on hearing him say "I eat the chicken, in my country we don't use chemicals in the ground, oh and I eat the chicken" I had to stop training back b/c I was laughing my ass off. All the disciplies where there taking notes from a guy who looks like he never touched a weight in his life.

a friend of mine told me that if you stop eating for 3 days the first thing that will go is the fat because is the preferred fuel of energy of the body and he mentioned somalia kids as an example he said "just look at somalian kids, they don't have fat and some are kinda muscular", another thing he said is that overtraining is good for you because that is the best way to burn fat and that there was not problem with muscles cuz they will recover eventually, he also told me that fat was water, he promised to send me the medical data to back up that......
oh shit, what do you think ?
