Theres alot of ways to make your mark on the gym, from pictures on the wall, plaques with names of records, and many others, but what about the every day life of a gym rat. The reason I say this is because I have been a member to my gym for 5 years, and have seen almost every type of lifter come through the doors from wanna be to doin it, from novice to expert and everything in-between. When a person comes in the door and you get that first glance of them peeping them out what earns respect points for that individual the most. The Form? The Weight? The Drive?

For me personally its the attitude (swag) of the individual. I have trained many people, and the people that are most willing to learn and grow and don't mind their form or different points being corrected are the people that I respect the most.

Drive impresses me. If some one is there every day going 100% and I can actuallt watch them make progress it impresses me more than some big guy throwing around heavy weights.

It's a mixture for me. I like seeing good form, but good form without heavy weight doesn't impress me very much. Likewise, someone throwing around heavy weight isn't as impressive to me as someone throwing around that same weight with good form.

At the same time, it also has to do with physique and size as well. But the physique without the strength doesn't impress me either.

Can you tell I'm not easily impressed? hehe

Definitely heart,,drive and determination.

Arnold wasn't mucho and yet everyone loved him and respected him, he was funny, sometimes acted childish... very great guy tho

Attitude.. Putting back weights.. Willingness to learn from others..

Everyone starts from the begininning.

I think its a mixture of things lol, I tend to judge people first on size tho. In my opinion you loose respect tho if your huge and lift shitty weights and poor form, and you gain it if your small but seem to be hittin the big weights and good form. In the gym but you respect the people in theyre killing themselves and the people who respect each other by keeping the gym in shape, you loose respect from me if your in the gym with a phone or untidy.

for men in no particular order

1. guys who run on the treadmill for 5+ miles without stopping (giving some love to the endurance athletes here, i still think lifters bag more women though in the end :)
2. guys who are muscular
3. guys who put up a lot of weight

for women

1. regulars (meaning women who are in there ED or EOD)
2. ones that aren't scared to occasionally workout in the meathead section
3. ones that can crank off 5+ miles on the treadmill

Modesty... I'm impressed if a bro has worked hard to have a body to show, but he goes most everywhere in normal-fitting clothes, and doesn't show it off, and doesn't jump forward to outlift everybody else at the gym. I try to obey the not showing off etiquette, but I have to admit I'm a showoff sometimes, and consciously I know that nobody likes a showoff or a braggart.

^^^^ i have my headphones and I am quiet around the gym. there is one guy who is very social who kinda be-friended me and we help each other spotting etc. but people otherwise mistake me as being cocky or whatever when I am not. I just like to stay focused and have my headphones in and ignore everything.

I'm not gonna lie, I've never met a single person who wasn't impressed by a good set of abs :)

luckily i have a home gym so i dont deal with anybody because typically i dont like many people...especially people that talk to me while i work out

Thats what i hated about my last training partner ,he would be non stop yakking away while i'm in the middle of a workout!

future serial killer? Lol...

For me its the people that are humble and able to throw around good weight with proper form. Or even the scrawny noob who seems to realize that form is more important than impressing anyone and puts up small amounts of weight but progresses.

I hate seeing all these kids and peeps in their early 20s putting 600lbs on the bar for squatting and then their reps look like a little kid shaking trying to hold in a piss and/or putting three plates up for bench but only bringing it down 6 inches from the rack then strutting around the gym like they are a Bamf...hate those douchefaces.

Arnorld is NĂşmero UNO!! Fucking love that guy. Huge but slim waist! What I would give to look like that!

Not so much anymore...:( now he is just a saggy bag of skin and bones.

arnold-schwarzenegger.jpg

it completely ruins the workout..i cant focus it drives me nuts..i refuse to workout with anybody...

The Drive, seeing some committed and dedicated gets my vouch
but seeing a big guy u know he would have had/have the drive to get to that stage anyways

Guys who are serious and dedicated to the gym are the most impressive, guys who are natural and putting up more weight and looking better than juicer gets my second vote also.. What i really hate is young guys that juice who are weak and lookin like shit, tells me they're not dedicated just looking for a shortcut..

people who are as passionate as me about lifting, and moving heavy weight of course. abs to me are only impressive if the person used to be fat, or if theyre huge

I like a bodybuilder that focused on his workout instead of social time...and a person that re-racks his weights instead of littering them across the gym.

the size

I lose respect for fools who use retarded heavy weight and perform a 1/4 rep thinking they are the shit. they usually look like shit too

no talking. just drive and working in the gym for sure.. i try and emmulate this aswell, i love seeing that, not being too social and concentrating.

I love seeing girls do deep squats and right before they explode up with the weight, you hear a loud ass fart!!! hell ya let me get some of that

more seriously, form, on everything no matter the weight used but even more so if strict form and heavy weight is used

luckily i have a home gym so i dont deal with anybody because typically i dont like many people...especially people that talk to me while i work out

Agreed, headphones are basically a sign that I do not socialize. A courtesy wave or what now to say hi or a quick 30 second catch up with a old friend but other than that, let me just do work and let go of everything else in the world for 2 hours.

ya I do the headphone thing as well. It doesnt always work though, theres always that one guy that seems to not care and will try and talk to you anyway. O well, it is what it is. I cant imagine being a PRO, im sure people talkin to you in the middle of a workout gets old real fast.

so if someone is interested in what youre doing, and they ask you for your advice on it without even trying to talk to you for that long thats rude??

yes...wait until there done before talking to them..ive had many people literally stand over me chit chatting while im trying to work out...now i refuse to go to any gym but my own

Clearly you're not interested in making friends or helping anyone but yourself. I wear my headphones when I work out, but I'm not going to ignore someone tapping me on the shoulder when I'm resting to ask me something........its flattering, really.

There is no harm with answering a question orgiving someone a quick information session between sets.

And frankly, if I trained at your gym, I would be happy that you train alone at home.

Always critical of form. Nobody in my gym seems to know what a proper squat or what a deadlift even is. Benches are almost always full though. You can tell the guys and girls who are dedicated and who ate respectful. They are always working hard, have good form, and respect the gym and it's equipment.

i would never interrupt someone during a set. and if i do talk to someone i make it quick. but if someone was interested in what i was doing and wanted to know about it or ask for some advice id be more than happy to help them out. standing over someone talking while theyre lifting though is totally different and unnaceptable but its not what i meant.

CLEARLY your right sir. I go to the GYM ON MY TIME to HELP MYSELF get bigger. im not there to help anyone else, and I could care less about making friends in the gym. I dont go there for that s***. I go to be bigger and stronger.

HOWEVER, IF someone does talk to me IN BETWEEN sets, I dont mind and am very friendly and sincerly try to help the person. As long as they dont tank it overboard and start asking me everything there is about working out. A quick question doesnt bother me. But I dont go there to make friends or help others, your right

Form over anything really, my training partner thinks he can do 40kg dumbell bench when he actually does half reps, makes me want to train by myself even more

I'm mixed on this. I don't mind socializing a bit or answering legit ques. but there are people who babble on and seem to forget you're working out. I had a drunk guy wander in the other week who just started talking to me about bent over rows. this guy who was a fraction of my size proceeded to start lifting the warm up weight i was using w/ poor form and became a pest. After a minute i told him to try it w/ lighter weight and let me do my workout. He apologized and wandered away , did some curls and left.

Me too. I do work out alone (I built a decent gym at home), and I do best alone without interruptions. My wife is cool about keeping conversations to a minimum, and she won't ask me a question in the middle of a set. But that doesn't preclude the door bell, telephones, or one of the cats showing up indoors with a live rat, etc. So there are interruptions anyplace, I guess.

When I do work out in a gym (hotel, invited to go with somebody else to their gym, etc), I really don't want to socialize. Maybe it's because I have high-functioning autism, which carries with it severe ADD, but once I get my mind onto a conversation, I have no idea how many reps I just did, or even how long I've rested between, etc. It's a disaster. Just to give an idea of how far off-subject I can get when I'm ambushed in conversation by someone, I've been an experienced motorcyclist (dirt and street) for nearly 35 years... A couple weeks ago, I was getting ready to go out on my R1 for a Sunday ride, and a neighbor came babbling about a problem with another neighbor over some road damage. I was listening to her, and I forgot to turn the gas on! I made it in out into the highway, and it crapped out, and you can't reach the gas on that bike when sitting on it. So I had to pull over, get off, and turn the gas on, and it's lucky it was Sunday as there's not really room to pull over on the highway I live on without getting in a muddy ditch or getting hit by a truck mirror. I've never forgotten to turn the gas on before, and this is a perfect example of why I'm not capable of chit-chatting and doing anything else at the same time.

I have to go with form on this one. I'm super anal about my form and if I manage to get bad form at some point in a lift I make sure to correct it immediately. I currently have a few guys at my gym that lift heavy weight with god awful form. They tend to give everyone that cocky ass smile like they are doing something special. The best part about it the guys are pretty damn small (look like they don't even workout their legs). Just drives me nuts when they give me that cocky smile, makes me just wanna ask them to compare their bodies with those around them, when many of those around them who look pretty good are lifting lighter with much much better form. When I see someone lifting with good form it tells me they've done their research and are taking lifting seriously rather than using it as an ego booster.

You and everyone else man. Any serious lifter comes into the weightroom to help themselves get bigger.......but that doesn't mean you have to shun others who are clearly impressed by some aspect about you, and would benefit from the sharing of your knowledge.

Between sets is all I was saying. Nobody likes to get jawed at during sets, and there isn't anything wrong with telling someone youre going to go do a set and cutting it short if you're really worried about your rest time.

I'm just saying, acting like a fucking cock and ignoring everyone makes them want you to work out at home just as much as you do.

50/50, I will help anybody with open arms or form or in general. I just really don't want to hear about your crazy run in with the cops downtown at the bars a week ago. But the helping is indeed a good thing and might cause a sort of butterfly effect of good form and technique, but everything else can go. Especially when you get that one friend that talks and talks and talks and you kind walk away a little bit backwards to show nicely that you got to get liftin and something else gets brought up and it starts over haha. Laaaaame

I will tell you what will immediately lose my respect... using the word "swag" ;)

if the damned gym is clean and has a decent range of stuff and is well laid out...
also, I like that my own gym has towels and bottled water in baskets all over the gym and has spa products for the locker room/shower (but Im a girl this stuff matters to me)

I couldn't give a rats ass about anyone else there
at.all.

boys are silly

very good point mate

Im impressed by the very out of shape person in the gym trying to be in better shape. They could be anywhere else but they are in the gym trying!! I have a deep passion and heart for people starting out giving it their all to be heathy and fit.

This x 10000 if they're there ED...

I am impressed by people who have the physique and an inversely proportioned ego. The guy or girl with the six pack who smiles and greets the front desk person, puts back his/her weights.

A well-developed bod and a nice smile doesn't so much impress me but might make me drool ;)

Etiquette is key. Putting your weights away and wiping your bench off if you left a Nasty mess of puddled sweat. Guys who arent embarrassed to ask a stranger for a spot instead of risking injury and looking like a fool when they get stuck. And dudes that ask to work in rather than just fucking up your shit and moving stuff around when you step away to grab a quick drink of water.

I'm impressed when chicks are throwing up good numbers on deadlifts. I find it sexy

Im impressed when a pregnant chick is on the treadmill trying to keep her shape as much as she can !! Thats hot !! Im not impressed when fat dudes with guts benching 315 and doesnt do any cardio to try and lose weight just lifts heavy .... I cant bench 315 but dont care cause when im at the pool and a hot 19yr old with fake tits and the roundest ass youve ever seen hits on me in front of my wife... makes this 39yr old smile and knows I still got it !!

Arnold wasn't mucho and yet everyone loved him and respected him, he was funny, sometimes acted childish... very great guy tho

Idk about that. A young guy came up to Arnold once and asked him what he did to get so big.

He told the guy to take eat a tablespoon of salt, then the next day eat 2 tablespoons of salt... etc. all the way to 30 days and 30 tablespoons of salt.

The kid nearly died.

consistent intensity

people who i see all the time giving 100% obviously with good form and all that

also the people that make real changes.. a huge guy who walks in and lifts the same big weights for a year without getting bigger.. so what..

the high school kid squatting 2x a week.. doing deads.. learning olympic lifts who grows and grows and grows..

that earns RESPECT

I wouldn't necessarily blame that on Arnold. That sounds to me like a joke made dangerous by ignorance.

The Form? The Weight? The Drive?

Attitude, form, and respect for others.

Form is also indicative of knowledge and discipline.

What impresses me most is someone lifting a heavy weight with good form. If your quarter squatting or benching you look stupid despite the amount of weight. All of us experienced lifters know that you can take 70% of that weight all the way down and lift it.

I like to see big weights moved with full range of motion. I don't care if it looks good.

Full range of motion is different for everyone depending on their proportions though.

It also differs depending on what youre trying to do.......I.E. a guy doing static contractions to build strength is going to look much different than a guy trying to create tears by touching his chest on bench or dragging his ass on squats.

I don't care about how they look or what they are trying to do. Al Caslow 850 squat 525 bench and 640 deadlift at 165 bodyweight is impressive. Andy Haman benching 600 for four perfect reps is impressive.

Didn't say it wasn't. My point was what is a "perfect rep"? By using that term, then you are conceeding that you care how it looks.

If that was really 600lbs that bar would be damn near foldin like a cheap lawn chair... They really start to bend at that weight!

He ain't stronger than Johnnie Jackson!

back to the original (and resurrected) thread...
What impresses me the most is seeing someone who is Obviously New to fitness, come in and you see them struggle every day, you see that the average person would find it very difficult to stick with it, they are light years from most of the members, but over the course of weeks and months you see them, there is a point where you look over and you are just proud of them, they begin to transform, even if its not a huge change, you realise that person is Not giving up.
To me, that is both motivational and respectable. It humbles you, because most of us started somewhere, and we didnt give up.
Props to the newbs, and their undaunting determination.

Someones drive and dedication in the gym is what impresses me. If you see someone that is their everyday doing there best and working hard it beats looking at a juice head that does one exercise per hour and then looks at himself in the mirror to see just how bloated he is and then struts through the gym. I laugh at these gentleman that do this.

I vote for drive, effort. Some people are naturally stronger than others, genetically better disposed, etc... but you cant teach grit. It comes from within and it will take you further than anything!

seeing 28 yr olds that are smaller weaker than me...
seeing 28 yr olds that are bigger than me and not as strong
seeing 28 yr olds bigger stronger than me but look like a ball of clay

WIth all that said, I'm not where i want to be yet.. and i'm old..

effort.. i see all these fat people today trying to get in shape by drinking a shake....

Seriously.........nothing makes me more angry.

It also kills me when people (*cough* laxbros *cough*) dick around in the gym, as if just being in the atmosphere of a gym is going to get them in shape.

also people who have respect for the sacred house of weights. don't drop weights like a dumbass, put your shit back, and dont sit on a fucking bench with a cellphone for 15 min when there is only 3 in the whole gym... sooo frustrating

You seem to have an issue with the age of 28. Lol

Attitude.. Putting back weights.. Willingness to learn from others..

Everyone starts from the begininning.

...and I will add one more to what has been said above...the willingness to give back to this lifestyle and this community, as we have evolved through the years we have not only grown and learned from our mistakes and trial and error, but have become stronger, healthier, and more knowledgeable. It doesn't and never stops there though...to continue evolve with the new information and techniques, getting out of the old way of doing things (ex: throwing Nolva in the garbage and using the new proven holistic approach to PCT and on cycle support supplementation) and growing into the new age. I try and research and learn something new everyday, and listen to my brothers who have more knowledge and experience than I do, and remain humble and respectful to them as they are to me my mentors. With that being said, what impresses me is this forum and all the knowledgeable brothers of iron who take the time out of their busy lives, time away from their families, sacrificing sleep to be on here to help other brothers and sisters whom they only know by a screen name to help them with their goals, their problems, to educate them and offer priceless knowledge and experience that they have to offer because us older generation never had this forum, never had the internet to search for this knowledge and information, we had magazines, books, and the bros in our local gym to give us guidance and sometimes it wasn't good information...so to all the younger generation please hear me out...show respect, be open to criticism, be open to listening and knowing that you are so very fortunate to have this site and all of the selfless brothers offering very valuable information and know that you are truly blessed to have the Iron Angel watching over you as well, as this brother has made the most sacrifices of anybody to give us this golden pot called Elite Fitness to come and help yourselves to just about anything you need to know about this lifestyle and know that the information is for the better of your health, safety, and that we all truly care about one another here as we are a family, and just like any families home you visit...you will be welcomed as long as respect and honesty is given...leave the ego at the door and ne humble...that is what truly impresses me.

I would like to add, that post was in no way racially, motivated.
Its the truth.

9/10 black guys at the gym ALWAYS wear long pants, and I have yet to see one do any calf workout, let alone any leg workout.
