What did you want to be growing up?

this is perfect for this thread.

marine biologist.

but i thought that meant you got to swim around with sharks, dolphins, and whales all day

asphalt hauler or concrete truck driver
10 yr vets make 130 K+ to drive a front shooter concrete truck, easiest job, you only get out of the truck to hose the chute down.

Still thinking of switching someday if I burn out on retail

The component of this question that makes it interesting is the "why" part. What you wanted to be growing up only reveals something deep about your person if you volunteer why.

Nimbus and smurfy are the only two that scratched the surface of it.

I wanted to be a gymnast, ballerina and figure skater all rolled in one. Because:

1. I was a fat ugly kid who wanted to be athletic, strong and pretty.
2. I wanted to entertain, to make people smile, laugh and cheer.

That was when I was little.

About the 7/8th grade I decided that I would like to be a shrink or lawyer. Both because of what I thought about the professions would offer me immense mental stimulation. Shrink because human behavior has always been fascinating to me (what it is that makes us tick). Lawyer because I have always been excited of the notion of an intelligent debate as I do believe (to this day) that new ideas are born of conflict and to be able to *win*, in other words, sway someone's thinking because I could use words to my advantage, now what could be better than that?

I liked wearing my blanket on my head and tying it there with the belt from my robe. I wouldnt say that reveals too much deep shit about my person.

Did you hear god telling you stuff though? It's ok to admit it if you did. I mean, you are already half way out of THAT closet. ;)

I think I could still be an excellent rally car racer. I learned to drive offroad and it's almost instinctual to me. Pavement is too predictable and boring. Take a car offroad and open the throttle and you can have some fun.

Faith in a god is a gift of which I've yet to receive, so no.

Splinter from the ninja turtles used to speak directly to me through the tv every saturday morning tho....

Mom's speakin of your closet where you keep your plugs and lube.
It puts the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again.

Governments love that shit...:)

UK government is largely perceived to be very anti-armed forces. Local authorities / councils will not allow the armed forces to "recruit" / even highlight a career in the forces within their schools. They do love FE colleges though as it cuts down on unemployment figures by the millions.

Wanted to be a vet, then saw my vet stick thermometer up dog's behind and changed my mind, then wanted to be a lawyer, really badly, I got into law school but then analized that if I were to become a lawyer I'm stuck in CR because laws vary from area to area... that's how I ended up being a psychologist ^_^

Anything in medicine, but a veterinarian the most. I have the math form of dyslexia, dyscalculia, higher level math is impossible.

But I'm a damned good self taught medical transcriptionist  shit comes natural to me *sigh*

I have never been able to do math, either.

I don't think you could be an EMT if you had my disability because you can't calculate dosages of medicines, etc. I'm sort of going on a ramble here, it's such an unknown disorder, but to give you a metaphor, imagine saying to someone who has dyslexia, "I'm not much of a reader, either." I wiki'd the definition because it's clearer than me trying to explain it:

Dyscalculia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"dyscalculia can also occur developmentally, as a genetically-linked learning disability, which affects a person's ability to understand, remember, or manipulate numbers or number facts (e.g., the multiplication tables). The term is often used to refer specifically to the inability to perform arithmetic operations, but it is also defined by some educational professionals and cognitive psychologists as a more fundamental inability to conceptualize numbers as abstract concepts of comparative quantities (a deficit in "number sense")."

In a nutshell, at 44, I am only capable of doing the most basic math in my head, and sometimes still use my fingers. I have a virtually impossible time memorizing numbers. I have to think very carefully to make change. I have to google the decimal equivalents of most fractions. I can only do multiplication by 2, 3, 5, 10 and 11 without having to think twice. I cannot measure anything, at all, I never get the same measurement twice and I have to count the marks on the ruler, I can't just look at something and go oh, that's six and three-eights. It also affects my ability to judge distance and speed and with rhythm and dancing, of all things (I have what I call "white girl rhythm").

For me, in school, the condition lead to extreme anxiety with anything that had to do with math and numbers, to the point of being physically ill over it. Despite the fact I always read well above my age group, I never excelled because all measures of intellect, at that time, were heavily math based.

However, I keep the household budget and am the pursewarden for my coven. Since math is such a demon for me I'm basically OCD about the smallest things, like keeping a check register balanced, literally, to the penny.

Thanks for the information. The specialists always told my parents that my problem was anxiety related. Like maybe I had a bad math experience as a child and it causes me to get hella worked up. I can do math when I'm not thinking of it as math. Kinda strange. Dosage calcs are easy if I think of it as medicine and not math. Chemistry was the same for me. I had to think of it as changing chemicals instead of math. When I am trying to do math and think of it as math, I can get as far as basic division.... but that's it. Couldn't pass prealgebra in high school. Took it 3 times, no joke.

Actually algebra I was the only math I did well since it was primarily logic and our teacher was tremendous. I only scraped by with low Cs or Ds on the required maths in high school and once I had the bare minimum I needed to graduate actually dropped it by grade 12.

Research it a little, not that it makes any difference now, but sometimes just having an answer for things explains a lot. Anxiety is a huge component, and it affects different people differently. Some of us have NO sense of direction and cannot use a map (me) some can't read an analog clock or have left right confusion. Also, since it can be genetically linked, if your son has problems with math down the road getting him the right help very young could make all the difference in his school experience.

Strange. I have the same problem with direction. Its so bad, they wouldn't let me drive the ambulance. I always got lost. I need to take the exact same route to get home from places. Shortcuts get me lost BAD.
I also have problems with left and right. Its not automatic for me. It's like I need to think about it or something. Hmmm...

musclemom subz told me you helped him with his fucked up dreams?
He did?! I'm glad I helped him :)

I do dream interpretation, shoot me a PM anytime if something's bugging you.

Plotinus's teacher was a Dock Loader.
I wanna be wise, but not a Dock Loader.

Hmmm... Psychiatrist growing up, now it looks more like professor.

no way its too fucked up

i think it was just bc i was up all night then when i finally dozed off i had crazy dreams
It's all good, whatever you're comfortable with. I've heard some weird ones but this might help you understand it a little for yourself. In my experience there are only about four "types" of dreams:

1. Flights of fancy. Way more than 75% of your dreaming. They don't mean shit, just your brain going on a vacation, sometimes the vacation means going on a lot of thrill rides, which is why you have nightmares. These types of dreams can be easily affected by what you ate or drank or othewise, uh, ingested.

2. I've got a message for you. These are your subconscious literally communicating something to you, could be something about your life, could be a problem that's on your mind. Our subconscious works on a symbolic/metaphoric level, so plays on words or puns are common in the imagery. This is where you're going to get the odd surrealistic imagery that just makes you wake up and go "WTF?" Sometimes you have to play around with the words of the image to get the message.

3. I've got a message for you that hasn't happened yet. Precognitive dreams. Unfortunately, 95% of the time you realize you had a precognitive dream it's too late to do anything about it, you just find yourself going "Oh shit, I dreamed this last week ..." then, if you're a good witch, you pull out your dream journal and there it is in black and white.

4. Other. Depending on how spiritually minded you are (i.e., how much you pray, meditate or do other activites that actually change your waking brains wave state) you can, in a dream state, have interaction on the astral plane with other level beings or even people or animals who have passed over. Sometimes you can dream of your past lives. Also, other types of physic information can come through (some very successful inventors used to dream the answers to their dilemmas. Sometimes this is an example of #2, but sometimes, particularly when it comes to someone like Tesla, I wonder if this isn't what's happening).

Of course, someone medically or scientifically minded will probably disagree with me. I honestly don't care anymore. I've personally had enough of dream types 2 - 4 that I don't need anyone else's approval any more :qt:
